School lunches advice from an expert: Kate Gosselin, mother of 8

jonkate.jpgIf you want to learn about something, ask an expert. When I wanted hints about packing school lunches, I asked Kate Gosselin, the mom in TLC’s reality series Jon and Kate Plus Eight, who is speaking to food writers on behalf of the Grains Foods Foundation.

Granted, Kate’s got only two children in school — 7-year-old twins Mady and Cara are in the second grade — but she’s also got 4-year-old sextuplets at home. Aaden, Joel, Collin, Hannah, Leah and Alexis are in preschool three afternoons a week, which means that Kate and the kids must sit down to lunch at 10:50 a.m. on those days. Planning and organization are obvious necessities for the Gosselin family, but Kate’s also concerned with nutrition and variety.

She asks the older girls each evening what they’d like for lunch the next day, then gets to work as soon as she’s done with dinner. Nine times out of 10, Cara and Mady get sandwiches. “They rarely agree on what kind of sandwiches,” Kate says.

“I cut out the sandwiches in shapes sometimes, change the bread,” she says.

Each lunch also includes yogurt or a cheese stick, a piece of fruit and something crunchy, such as popcorn or an oatmeal-raisin cookie. Finally, she tucks in a note. “Just my way sending love along with them to school,” she says.

None of her kids are picky eaters, although Joel went through a phase where he wasn’t interested in dinner. “For about a month, we had to tell Joel to pick up his fork or he didn’t,” she says. To compensate: “I bulked up his breakfast and lunch.”

Kate says she’s always thinking about new and different recipes. “I’m constantly at the store looking for things that are healthy but kids like,” she says. “It’s kind of my hobby. I like to fill them with healthy calories.”

She buys bread in bulk, “a whole flat of bread that the bread man brings in,” because her family goes through a loaf a day. She has three chest freezers (and two refrigerators). “The advantages of having eight kids is nothing has a chance to go bad or get stale,” she says.

Here are some recipes that Kate Gosselin developed for the Grain Foods Foundation:

FALL HARVEST SANDWICH

2 slices whole-wheat bread
1 tablespoon honey mustard
1 slice Cheddar cheese
2 slices honey ham
1/2 Granny Smith apple, sliced thin

Top 1 piece of bread with mustard, then cheese, then ham, then apple slices. Top with the remaining piece of bread. Cut on the diagonal and serve.

PB & APPLE

2 slices whole-wheat white bread or oatmeal bread
Peanut butter
1/2 apple, thinly sliced and drizzled with a tiny amount of lemon juice

Spread each slice of bread with peanut butter.  Place thin apple slices on one slice.  Close sandwich and cut into triangles.

CREAM CHEESE ROLL

1 slice whole-wheat white bread
Light cream cheese
1 slice smoked turkey
1/2  cucumber, sliced lengthwise

Trim the crusts of the bread and gently roll out the slice so it resembles pastry.  Spread with light cream cheese.  Place the turkey slice in the center of the bread.  Add cucumber slices.  Roll the bread similar to a sushi roll and cut into mini rolls.

CREAM CHEESE ROLL (FOR ADULTS)

1 slice whole-wheat white bread
Light cream cheese
1 slice smoked salmon
1/2 avocado, sliced

Trim the crusts of the bread and gently roll out the slice so it resembles pastry.  Spread with light cream cheese.  Place the smoked salmon in the center of the bread.  Add avocado slices.  Roll the bread similar to a sushi roll and cut into mini rolls.

HANDY HUMMUS WRAP

2 or 3 leaves lettuce
1 whole wheat or whole-wheat white wrap
2 to 3 tablespoons hummus
1/2  cucumber, sliced lengthwise
1/2 red pepper, cut into long strips

Place lettuce leaves in the middle portion of the wrap.  Top with hummus.  Add sliced cucumber and red pepper. Roll and cut in half.

This is hilarious! Kate Gosselin, an expert on anything?? Are you aware that this family has tons of help and is gifted from many companies with many freebies, on a regular basis? As far as taking her advice on how she cooks for her family, and organizes, you might be interested in knowing that the family has a personal chef and an assistant.

Neither Kate nor Jon has an outside job, only their weekly show. I am disappointed that Kate would be held up as an example of an “expert” on anything but money-grubbing. Do your homework, please.

I love watching the Gosselin’s on TV and I appreciate that the family needed to go to the media route to earn enough to take care of that brood and be there with them. I’m not sure I approve of IVF, but that’s what Roe vs Wade was all about, a woman’s right to privacy and choice.

The meal ideas are spot on. The only things I did differently with my family was to substitute the bread with non-grain foods as wraps, substituted non-dairy choices for cheese, elimintated any taint of meat, and made my own raw, sprouted chickpea hummus.

Kate doesn’t cook. She has a personal chef and a personal assistant. Why you would choose to feature the world’s greediest couple is beyond me.

— Oh Katie!
1:30 pm September 16th, 2008

Wow - aren’t we rude LOL! Whether or not Kate has help, she and her husband do a lot themselves. You’re probably jealous b/c you don’t have help or can’t come up with ideas yourself. Lighten up and enjoy that fact that regardless of where the bag lunch ideas come from they are helpful. You must be an expert at this yourself or don’t have any children yourself. Hopefully I won’t see your rude comments again.

I begrudge no one an honest living when it doesn’t hurt anyone else. There are 8 wounded victims here and worshipping this woman will only prolong the children’s suffering.

These might be interesting if they weren’t a replay of a dozen or more mothering cookbook lunch suggestions. Sorry, but I haven’t seen Kate prepare anything yet that the recipe wasn’t already published somewhere. I wouldn’t care if she’d just admit it and quit making remarks like real cooks don’t need recipes and then slavishly follow a recipe for pancakes.

Jealous? I think that’s number three on the Kate defense list of attacking someone who doesn’t think Kate walks on water.

I’m sure the Gosselin personal chef has submitted the recipes to Grain Foods Foundation. What else is this money making machine trying to pull off to the public?

Have you ever seen Kate Gosselin hang out with other moms, have you seen her go to the park with her kids and hang out with other moms? Have you ever seen her kids have friends over?

NO, NO, and NO!

Kate thinks other moms are beneath her. She is rude to them in public.
She doesn’t really like to be with her kids except on the show (caching!)
And her kids aren’t allowed to have friends or talk to the kids in their
neighborhood!

She is a narcissist who has cut all family and friends out of the kids lives.

Kate’s “recipes” are all back of the boxers. She doesn’t have an original thought in her head.

Having grown up in the restaurant industry and being around chefs all my life I must say that Kate’s recipes are plagiarized and mediocre at best.

Since Kate has a private chef and no longer cooks she can’t be instructing women on how to cook for their families.
Since Kate has a gardener, a housecleaner and paid laundry service she really can’t instruct women on the products to use or helpful home care hints.
Since Kate has a paid nanny she can’t instruct women on how to care for their kids when she is in bed on her laptop all day and Jenny is playing with her kids.
Since Kate has a personal assistant she can’t complain she’s exhausted all day.
Since Kate is given everything FREE including all of the above, she cannot instruct Mothers in this economy how to save money.

And since she really does NOTHING for her kids, house or family finances you can say that she is NOT A SUPERMOM!

Kate Gosselin is a freeloading mooching baby p!mp!
NOTHING to be jealous of.

Please pinch me and tell me I am dreaming. Kate Gosselin would not know how to cook her way out of a brown paper bag. Expert?! Puhlease! Are you all wathcing the same show I am? We see two grapes and three crackers on a paper plate for lunch. A chef prepares and delivers dinner. Kate in a grocery store? Only when the cameras are rolling, folks… otherwise we have Jon and Jenny the personal assistant for that. This is such a sham. Please do your research next time and don’t give a platform to these scam artists.

4:02 pm September 16th, 2008

Wow, did she “develop” PB&J too? I’ve seen these recipes a million times before. Check out numerous sandwich places and you’ll find those same sandwiches. Guess you have to have 3 freezers and 2 refrigerators to keep all the freebies. I wonder how many pictures of their kids they had to sell to afford those?

Really? Do any of you bloggers know the Gosselins personally? Because I really don’t think you should be judging people you don’t know. Just because you watch the show and listen to gossip doesn’t mean you know them.
I like the article. I enjoy watching the show. If you don’t like them then don’t watch the show. Their choices and actions don’t affect you so leave them alone to live their lives however they choose.
Thanks for the recipes.

Kate Gosselin, the “lunch expert”? Are you kidding me? A couple pita chips, a couple grapes and a slice of cheese does not a lunch make. Those kids are starving most of the time, it shows by their bad, bratty behavior, and so called “low blood sugar”. YOU, the author, could probably teach her a thing or two about lunch. By the way, those are not original recipes, they’ve been around for years.

P.S. You forgot her best concoction. Peanut butter and Marshmallow Fluff sandwiches, a rare treat! Yeah, that’s a healthy lunch, not!

— CoolBeans1
4:50 pm September 16th, 2008

What’s hilarious is that, on Jon and Kate Plus 8, Kate has come out and claimed that “real cooks don’t use recipes.” So it was quite kind of her to offer these…recipes…to those peons among us who are not “real cooks.”

I see criminals on TV, should I not judge them too because I don’t personally know them?
Since when do we need a recipe for a sandwhich anyway? Gee, how did moms survive all these years without Saint Kate to show them the way

5:24 pm September 16th, 2008

I am very surprised that such non-fans would take the time out of their lives to make a comment on an article about Kate Gosselin.
Kate is the mother of 8. So what if they get money for being on tv. THEY HAVE 8 KIDS! If they didn’t recieve the extra money, they wouldn’t be able to take their kids to places like the zoo, out for ice cream, out for dinner, to Disney World. It’s nothing for a family of 4 to do those things, but for 10 it is not… Think about that people…
Onto the positive.
Those sandwiches sound so good! I would like to try one of them!! I would never be able to get that creative for a sandwich!! :)

— JK+8FAN
10:38 pm September 16th, 2008

Oh my! this family certainly has friends and foes. Let’s keep the comments civil, though. Thanks!

I asked the Grain Foods publicist to check with Kate about the personal chef rumor. (The key word here is “rumor,” don’t you think?) It turns out that she’s already addressed it on her website: http://www.sixgosselins.com/qanda/qanda4.html

Also, fyi, when I interviewed Kate last week, I asked her if she had created the recipes by herself or if they came from the Grain Foods Council. She said those recipes are ones she created and makes for her family, and I believe her. Of course they’re easy recipes — she has eight kids!

— Judith Evans
9:03 am September 17th, 2008

Judith, you stated:
Also, fyi, when I interviewed Kate last week, I asked her if she had created the recipes by herself or if they came from the Grain Foods Council. She said those recipes are ones she makes for her family, and I believe her.

So, she “makes” them for her family. She didn’t answer your question, Judith. I don’t believe she “developed” them as you stated in your article. These are not new recipes. My opinion is that she isn’t much of expert on anything. Her husband is home all day to help her, along with a nanny. He has been shown on TV doing a little computer work in the bedroom closet. She doesn’t appear to be as much of a “hands on” mother as she claims to be. You need to watch more than a few episodes of this show to see what I mean and maybe you’ll understand why most of the commenters feel the way they do.

— CoolBeans1
1:13 pm September 17th, 2008

Dear Judith,

Oh of course Kate Gosselin is going to tell you that she has no personal chef and that all those recipes are hers. Of course! I’m sure she was sweet as pie on the phone wasn’t she? You don’t think she wants you to know the truth about her, do you? Of course not! She’d lose money and her and Jon might actually have to work for a living like all the other parents of multiples! Don’t used car salesmen act all nice and wonderful when they are selling you clunkers?
Judith trust the people who know the truth about Kate and Jon. Trust the people who are telling you the truth about how nasty, evil Kate is and how much of a liar she is, and how her and Jon have told people that they never wanna work again. And how they are doing this by exploiting their kids.
She is trying to make herself a BRAND and she has an image consultant and a PR person.
Call up her neighbors, call up her now fully estranged family, call up old nursing friends, call up volunteers who helped Kate with the kids.
Call up people in their community who have had run ins with her and how snobby and unapprochable she is. CALL UP ANY OF THE ABOVE. They are the ones who will tell you the truth. Not Kate! Kate wants fame and money and she will lie, fake and stomp all over people and use those kids to get what she wants.

ps. Judith does Craft Services deliver all the meals with wine and flowers? NO! Personal Chefs do that.

— Teresa Rose
1:35 pm September 17th, 2008

You have GOT TO BE KIDDING.

A “recipe” for peanut butter and sliced apple sandwich? And a commenter who says that she could never be so creative with sandwiches? You would have to be a total moron to think these are great sandwiches. I love the part where she tells you to put the second slice of bread on the top!

Mothers have been making sandwiches for years and years. I could probably describe two dozen more sandwiches right off the top of my head that are much more “creative.” And one slice of meat and 2 pieces of bread is ridiculous.

The only reason that the sextuplets need to eat lunch at 10:50 (which is absurd) is because they go to a pre-school about one hour away! They must be starving by the time they get home. And then their after school snack probably interferes with their dinner! It would have made a lot more sense to send them to AM pre-school… and then they could actually come home for lunch and nap in the afternoon. Isn’t that what Kate lives for… naps?

— Baffled
2:55 pm September 17th, 2008

Baffled,
I’m guessing the kids go to preschool in the afternoon because if they went in the morning Kate would have to get up before 8 am! It’s been shown on the show that when Jon worked outside the home he got the twins up, dressed, and off to school. He also prepared Kate’s coffee, per her written directions, before he left and I would assume he still does it now.

— CoolBeans1
3:38 pm September 17th, 2008

By the way, there is no such thing as Whole Wheat WHITE Bread.
It is regular white bread that they added a small amount of
whole grain flour to. It’s just another way to KON American
Mothers into buying a lie. Just like Kate.

6:49 pm September 17th, 2008

Judith,

Thank you for taking the time to follow up to see if she did write the recipes. In my case, it does not matter. I feel her and her husband are exploiting their children and I do not want any recipes from people that would do such a thing or exhibit such bad judgement. I can understand a few TV specials here and there but to actually force your children to live THEIR LIVES under a camera is absurd and very bad in terms of judgement. THey have admitted to commiting to something to like 50 episodes next season. Could you honestly say this is healthy for young children? I believe no one can truly answer this question as no known human being has ever truly grown up on a film set to the extent Gosselins apparntly have planned. They never need to work again and their children can be 24 hour performers. Yikes.

To set the record straight: White whole-wheat bread DOES exist. It’s made with a lighter-colored variety of wheat.

You also can buy white whole-wheat flour (online from King Arthur Flour, http://www.kingarthurflour.com, at Trader Joe’s, Dierbergs and I think some Schnucks stores). I use white whole-wheat flour more often than all-purpose; it’s especially nice in quick breads.

Here’s a link to the Mayo Clinic’s explanation of white whole-wheat flour: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/whole-wheat-bread/AN01512

Here’s a link to Wonder Bread’s description of its white whole-wheat bread: http://www.wonderbread.com/nutrition.asp

— Judith Evans
8:30 am September 18th, 2008

Judith,
This “special” “albino” wheat is in fact a NON organic GMO wheat that has been modified to contain only 30% nutritional value of real whole wheat. Its basically all white flour. It has been modified to contain very little bran and germ.
It is not as healthy, satisfying to hunger, or as nutritionally sound as regular time tested whole wheat flour.

It’s hardly surprising given that the latest dietary guidelines make mention of the benefits of whole grain. One of the new breads is Wonder Bread from Sara Lee. Although apparently “these new breads have less fiber than whole wheat bread - between 3 and 4 grams for two slices compared with upward of 5 or 6 grams”.

The fact is, that the FDA still has no true guidelines of how to label whole wheat. So its easy to lie and fudge the labeling, like Wonder and Sara Lee have by listing a serving as 2 slices to give the appearance of a higher fiber content then a 1 slice serving of regular whole wheat. The white whole wheat is significantly less fiber and nutrition then regular whole wheat, and they are far more processed then regular whole wheat.

Also the new white whole wheat has less protein and thats not a good thing.
If you look at Kate’s sandwiches they have 1-2 slices of meat. A typical serving of meat is 1 oz or 6-7 slices. Kate’s 1-2 slices? Thats definitely not enough protein. That fact added to the daily all day undiluted juice-a-thons, and the weekly bag of monkey munch and sugary pancakes (turkey bacon is a rare treat) is really a testament to why the kids are always screaming and crying and suffering low blood sugar attacks.
They need more protein WITH their carbs.

For a woman who suffers PCOS, Kate should know better. Especially since she can pass it on to her daughters. PCOS sufferers can develop diabetes. But as a nurse Kate should know all of this.

It is best to just feed yourself and your family regular brown whole wheat bread with crusts on from the get go, then to trick your kids with a highly processed Fake Food Bread.

Basically most of Kate Gosselins recipes are average recipes you can find anywhere (I found all of the basic recipes on other websites last night) and the Monkey Munch and Sticky Buns etc that she had on the show were found to be plagiarized from backs of boxes.

The fact remains that Kate Gosselin is a multi millionaire who has everything done for her from cooking, to laundry to buying food to watching and playing with her own kids. She is not like average moms and therefore cannot instruct them on Mom things.

— Teresa Rose
4:15 pm September 18th, 2008

Theresa, you’re wrong about white whole-wheat flour. King Arthur sells an organic version on its website: http://www.kingarthurflour.com/shop/landing.jsp?go=DefaultSearch&stype=product&term=organic+white+whole+wheat

— Judith Evans
4:28 pm September 18th, 2008

Judith,
It may be ORGANICALLY GROWN but the creation of that wheat is not organically created. That wheat is a hybridized, lab creation. And it is not comparable to real whole wheat. It’s got less of everything.
Look, I can go to any farm in Ephrata, Pa and ask the farmer for some corn seed. They will hand me a few hybridized lab created kernels that they get from a Monsanto subsidiary. And I can go home and plant them in my yard using only manure as the fertilizer and no pesticides and thats Organic. But the corn was still lab created and hybridized.

My family and I have been in the restaurant and food biz over 60 yrs. My mom, me and my sis have won cooking contests.

Kate is no El Bulli.

— Teresa Rose
8:09 pm September 18th, 2008

The 3 freezers and 2 refrigerators sound very wasteful. I come from a family of 15 (13 children, 2 parents) and we got by with one refrigerator, and just the little freezer on top. Then again, my parents were very hands-on and didn’t use convenience foods. My mother did all her own canning. Not trying to be judgemental, just kind of shocked at the waste.

— Karina
9:14 pm September 18th, 2008

can’t come up with ideas yourself.

Wow. Kate invented the recipe for a ham sandwich with mustard? I am impressed!

— CarleneKreider
9:33 pm September 18th, 2008

Are you nuts??!! Kate Gosselin doesn’t have even a particle of intelligence or creativity - isn’t it obvious? Come on… a peanut butter and apple sandwich? It is common knowledge that Kate has a personal chef who prepares gourmet organic meals accompnied by wine and flowers. Kate doesn’t cook at all - too busy with plastic surgery, spa visits, manicures, pedicures, and massages. The $$ for these come from her pimping out of her children. I recommend you properly investigate people before you write articles like this about them. It makes YOU look very bad indeed.

— I know BS when I see it
9:47 pm September 18th, 2008

Its so sad that once again the “jealous Kate haters” came out to ruin a great article. Kate is truly a Supermom if she has to put up with some of the slop that people wrote here. There are so many lies written on this page its just plain ridiculous. “Private Chef” is called craft services and just because she has a helper doesn’t mean she doesn’t raise her kids.

Why do these women appear to be so bitter even though they only see perhaps 25 hours of a persons week on a TV show? THERESA ROSE or whoever she really should be ASHAMED of the garbage she wrote. Thanks again for the great Gosselin interview and some delicious recipes we are dying to make this week!

— AnotherJ&Kfan
9:48 pm September 18th, 2008

Judith,
Some “meals” are provided by craft services, the food service Figure 8 pays for to provide food for the crew and family the daty they are filming. However, this food is not gourmet - it’s more snacks and light fare. The personal chef prepares full gourmet organic meals. Kate tries to spin that it’s all craft services food, but it isn’t. You are a reporter. I suggest you be a bit more aggressive in checking, verifying and presenting the FACTS. Judith, you are on a slippery slope here. When this scam blows, some of it might blow back on you. Seriously.

— I know BS when I see it
10:00 pm September 18th, 2008

I’ll bite and even give the benefit of the doubt on this whole ‘craft services’ BS that coincidentally makes crab cakes that are to die for, so I hear, and delivers fresh flowers with the ‘catering’.

So, let’s see - with them there admittedly filming at their house on average 4 days a week, the parents traveling at least two weekends a month to tent revivals to drum up cash, how much time exactly does that leave Kate to get down in her kitchen?

Hey Judith, next time you’re chatting it up with Kate, ask her if she’s had to ‘pretend’ to play with her kids lately. She hates that almost as much if not more as ‘pretending’ to cook for the little babes.

Jon and Kate are scam artists.

— Moi
10:15 pm September 18th, 2008

uh, do you ever watch the show? this person does not cook! she’s lazy and useless. she has “help” to do that. making lunches would be beneath her. if the help wasn’t around, she’d just get poor Jon to do it. he gets the kids ready for school, takes them, etc. while she sleeps. lol. looks like you got suckered. she got these recipes from her chef.

— ahaha
10:54 pm September 18th, 2008

Judith, this article was upsetting to me because I feel the Gosselins are exploiting their children and I am sick of seeing the continuation of this in any form. There is another aspect of this article that I am also finding annoying…that is the only reason this article was posted is because KON are now a celebrity couple. What about following this article up with an article from some hardworking ladies in St. Louis who are professional chefs and can really provide some good ideas? I would prefer to hear from someone with some culinary training here. Just a thought.

All of you Kate haters just dont quit do you? You cant stand Kate yet you are googling her every minute you get, you hate their show yet you seem to Tivo it everytime it comes on and watch every second of it a million times so you can find something to complain about!! So what if she has a chef, so what if she gets freebies, SO WHAT!! If the family was on welfare then you would talk about that..cant you all just be happy those kids are well taken care of and the family aint struggling?? If you hate them so much stop watching thier show so the ratings go down, stop googling everything they are doing so her name isnt the #1 most looked up! Better yet, get jobs so you guys can have something else to think about during the days:) KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GOSSELINS!!!..I think you guys are awesome and I will continue to watch your shows every monday:)

11:28 pm September 18th, 2008

The last time I saw Kate Gosselin doing anything in the kitchen, she was screaming at one of her daughters for eating a strawberry. Seriously, taking nutritional advice from this woman (who has a private chef and openly admits to feeding her family from the Craft Services table on shoot days) is like taking wardrobe advice from Hulk Hogan.

Kate Gosselin is nothing but Wonder Bread on this country’s nutritional landscape. Seriously, want some sound, cheap nutrition advice. Pick up the phone book and call your old high school Home Ec teacher. The information will be better and I’m sure she’ll be glad to hear from you.

— ThreeFarmers
11:51 pm September 18th, 2008

Worse example in the world, a woman who can’t even get her butt out of bed to make her own coffee and you want us to buy she’s making anyones lunch. Sorry, I’m not brain dead yet and remember these from my mom making my lunch. Kate googled, asked Jon or the chef but her make a sandwich for her child, ha! Seriously find a real mother not someone who abused fertility drugs for fame. So she fooled you. Doesn’t speak well of you as a “reporter.”
The Grain org found an idiot to represent them. Doesn’t speak well of them either.
Maybe I’ll put my family on an Adkins diet and avoid grain until someone wakes from their LSD trip.

There is a website, written by Jodi’s (you remember Aunt Jodi right?) sister. She addresses many of the things people here are calling lies, Jodi has confirmed the things Julie (her sister) have said to be truth.

Jon and Kate are exploiting their children for freebies and a free ride. Their children WORK many hours a week from sun up to sun down at least 3 days a week. Since we’re going to go by what Kate says on her website “their life is their show and the show is their life” these arent parents they are they worst kind of exploiters.

They have 8 kids SO WHAT a lot of people have 8 kids, and no I’m not jealous, I’m so not jealous her life sickens me.

Judith,
I just wanted to let you know that your article is great and I’m sorry that you have to be belittled by these members of the GWOP(Gosselins Without Pity bloggers). They really do have NO LIFE!!! There lives consist of following every single move the Gosselins make. It cracks me up that they would go to so much trouble to put down this family. I appreciate this article and thank you to Kate for giving me such good ideas for my daughter’s lunch.

Sorry to burst your ego bubble Kate, the expert sandwich maker, but those so called ‘orignal’ lunch recipes arent a new concept. If you are such the sandwich expert, Subway is taking applications.

Cheryl. Kate did NOT do IVF. Ugh. Take time to realize the difference between IUI, IVF, injectable gonadotrophin therapy, and clomid. IVF would have been much more responsible since you can limit the amount of blasts that get transfered. Before you make judgements on “IVF” you may want to actually understand it first.

Seriously? Do we need Kate Gosselin to tell us how to make a sandwich? If you can’t make a sandwich, “Top with the remaining piece of bread. Cut on the diagonal and serve”, then I’m pretty sure we can’t find this website, or the power button on the computer. Geez, give me a break!

9:20 am September 19th, 2008

Kudos to the Gosselins’ PR rep for conning you into citing Kate Gosselin as an ‘expert’ on anything. I used to watch this ‘reality’ show and never saw her cook anything besides pancakes. Lunches appeared to be anything she could pull from a bag (vegetables, cheese puffs) or box (raisins) and slap on a paper plate.

Regarding the above recipes….none are new as my mother fed me these sandwiches over 35 years ago! Please say that she did not have the audacity to claim that these were ‘her original’ recipes.

Same on you and on your publication!

10:50 for lunch??? What time do they eat dinner, 3:00? They must get up at 5 AM! And you mean to tell me Kate’s up before 8:00? That’s a joke! Lunch must be her first meal of the day then, Lordy Be!!!

I can honestly see both points of view. It’s easy to read all the bad and get drawn in, but then I put things into perspective. I may not agree with many decisions Kate makes, but I do think she loves her kids. I think they are fed, bathed, housed, clothed, & so on. So I know that all their physical needs are being met. I can’t help but think of all the kids out there…in our country,in our own state, city, and neighborhoods who are suffering because they don’t have their physical needs being met (food, shelter, clothes, etc..). So you move on to emotional. Once again..her personality and the way she treats the people around her can leave me open-mouthed..shocked. So again I put things into perspective. Jon and Kate remain married raising 8 kids together. They watch movies as a family, they take long and short trips as a family, they interact with the kids outside on their driveway, the eat together, and on & on. Like I said..I may not agree with her style of parenting, but that’s ok. How many of you are divorced or know of someone who is. How’s that working for them? I know from being a child of divorce and a wife of one that it comes with many issues. So many kids are coming home from school to an empty house because mom and dad both work. They are left to their own devices until evening. Where is your concern for those kids? So many children are the victims of physical and sexual abuse. Where is your outrage..your anger? It’s right here! You use so much energy hating these people. Why? Because they “use” their kids for money? Please be honest with yourselves. Whether you have one kid or 10..if you were offered an ungodly amount of money in exchange for being taped for your own show would you refuse? I know. I know. “Yes!”. Fine..say what you will, but there are kids that need to go to college, food to be fed, clothes to buy, utilities, motgage, car, car repairs, insurance, doctor, dentisit, optometrist, etc..
I just want you to simply put this into perspective. Stop looking at the tv and look at the bigger picture. You need a mission? Go outside your door and help those that really need help! Volunteer! You aren’t going to change Kate Gosselin by telling her you don’t agree with her parenting or lack of, but you can make a difference in the life of a child who is REALLY suffering. Do it! Get off your butts and stop blogging about Kate Gosselin and those “poor” kids. LOL

I say Kudos to the Gosselin’s PR team for getting you guys to go beserk about something like sandwiches. Wake up! Don’t you know that a bunch of readers who never watched J&K Plus 8 are going to see these comments and be like “mmm..I wonder what all the fuss is about? I’m going to have to watch that show to find out.” The more you rant the higher their ratings get. They are playing y’all for fools.

10:44 am September 19th, 2008

So, according to some people, Kate should not be allowed to be interviewed for an article about what she makes for lunch for her kids? I suppose she is exploiting her kids by talking about what they eat for lunch. Right? What do all of your kids do during the time you spend watching and re-watching every episode to catch every possible thing there is to criticize? What do your kids do while you spend hours on the computer looking up the Gosselins and posting all over the place to criticize them? Wouldn’t your own family appreciate all of the attention you give to the Gosselins? When there are shows on TV that irritate me, I have this crazy way of dealing with it — I don’t watch it. Try it sometime, you might like it.

Actually, Sarah, school lunches today are very nutritional - it’s the law in just about all 50 states. As several have stated, these are not Kate’s recipes - they’ve been around for a long time.

Judith, just a question, have your actually watched Jon & Kate? My advice is to watch this show and then come back and tell us Kate Gosselin is ax “expert”. Quite frankly, to put this woman up on some type of “mommy pedestal” is insulting to good mothers everywhere.

Of course I’ve seen the show. I wouldn’t have written about it if I hadn’t.

Having a chef come into your home once a week hardly means you *never* have to cook. Aren’t we self righteous? And Im sure if ANY of you were offered freebies, you’d jump at the chance. Especially with this recession and having such a large family. More power to them!

— Amy
1:10 pm September 19th, 2008

That article is so funny. Obviously the author doesn’t watch the show. Kate doesn’t make the lunches for the twins. Her husband does it each morning while Kate stays in bed. She will usually get up a few minutes before Mady and Cara get on the bus. And the tups usually have lunches consisting of a piece of chees and four chips or crackers. Do your homework next time. But thanks for the laughs.

From Baffled:
“Mothers have been making sandwiches for years and years. I could probably describe two dozen more sandwiches right off the top of my head that are much more “creative.” And one slice of meat and 2 pieces of bread is ridiculous”.

Dear Baffled,
Why are you on here going on about how you have better recipes than Kate? I’m sure if you submit a recipe of your own, you’ll get some nice responses too! :D

From ahaha
“uh, do you ever watch the show? this person does not cook! she’s lazy and useless. she has “help” to do that. making lunches would be beneath her. if the help wasn’t around, she’d just get poor Jon to do it. he gets the kids ready for school, takes them, etc. while she sleeps. lol. looks like you got suckered. she got these recipes from her chef.”

OK Judith, I’ll bite. Here’s a YUMMY sandwich recipe!!! At least I won’t lie and say that I developed it.

Gross! Sandwich Recipe

butter or nonstick cooking spray .
2 slices bread
1 egg
1 tsp sugar
1 tbsp peanut butter

Step #1 toast bread slices.
Step #2 fry egg the egg with butter or spray.
Step #3 put the peanut butter on one side of the toast & the sugar on top of the peanut butter so that the sugar sticks to the peanut butter.
Step #4 place fried egg between slices of toast.
Enjoy the Gross! Sandwich recipe

— CoolBeans1

What a bunch of loonies. It’s an article on simple sandwich ideas for parents, and these vitriolic weirdos need to challenge each and every possible statement. “She didn’t make these up! She doesn’t feed the kids anyway! She’s so lazy! Her husband does it! No, it’s the cook! She gets a cook for free and I don’t! Her sister-in-law’s sister told me! I know her neighbor’s friend! Call them and ask! And even if she did make them, there’s no such thing as white whole wheat! Oh, there is? Well, it’s not as good for you as…” Blah, blah, blah.
If you have ethical problems with the show, approach the producers and the network. If you think you’re witnessing abuse, report it to CPS (and they can sigh at how some histrionic buttinsky is making a nuisance call). The point is, there are many more appropriate venues for your venom. Oh, and mean-spirited, jealous gossip isn’t evidence.

Now, after my own rant and in the spirit of recipe sharing, I would point out that the Harvest sandwich would be very good grilled.

This is so sad. Really, with the bread? I read that and I literally laughed out loud. I have watched this show (god help me) and you guys are going a little too far with the whole “organic” thing. Do you REALLY care that much? I’ve seen all the “exploitation” hype and if that is truly what you are concerned about, you need to stick to that subject. The rest just makes you look a little bit crazy. Seriously.

— you are embarrassing yourselves
3:42 pm September 19th, 2008

Check out the new issue of the National Enquirer. It’s reported that they do have a “personal organic chef.” I know this publication isn’t always accurate, but they were spot on with the John Edwards story, so it’s a strong possibility this fact is true.

Kate forgot to add the part where you scream at your spineless husband to make the sandwiches for you. Don’t forget to stand behind him the entire time giving him “love taps”.

And don’t forget folks… your darling children must eat every speck of there yummy sandwiches or NO BIRTHDAY CUPCAKES for them!!!!!!! Unless of course its your favorite child then they get to eat them in front of there siblings.

boowabajibil- Well said!!…All these Kate haters have to complain about is because she has a chef or because she gets free stuff. If they had the chance to have all Kate Gosselin does, they would do it in a heartbeat! They claim they wouldnt but we know they would..I Would!!haha! Try voicing your opinions and something that truly matters people…and yes if you stop watching her show the exploitation and everything will stop because they will cancel the show if there are no ratings! And besides where are your children while you are here googling Kate Gosselin and writing things you have no idea about on diffrent blogs? Maybe you ladies are the bad mothers??

“I’m not sure I approve of IVF, but that’s what Roe vs Wade was all about, a woman’s right to privacy and choice.”

They didn’t do IVF. They did IUI. Believe me, I think they are about as close to a living example of rabidly anti-choice (I don’t agree with the term pro-life) as you could possibly get!

Sigh.

Please STOP featuring ANYTHING having to do with the Gosselins. To do otherwise is tantamount to being complicit in the exploitation and general loss of freedom and privacy that has been robbed from 8 childhoods. These sandwiches are neither healthy, nor unique, nor helpful. And why is the salmon only for adults? Ludicrous.

6:30 pm September 19th, 2008

Judith,
I have read all the comments here and agree that this recipe blog is not necessarily the right forum to vent about the show. That being said, I think the thing that is most offensive to me is the fact that you chose to feature Kate Gosselin as an “expert” and someone to be admired. From what we’ve seen on the show (and you do admit you watch(ed) the show), it is clear that Kate does NOT do much cooking. As previous commenters have stated, the only actual cooking we’ve ever seen her do was to make pancakes. Furthermore, to take recipes that have been in existence for many, many years and claim that you’ve “developed” them is a flat out lie. IMO, this is just another indication of Kate’s poor moral character. She obviously more interested in the money she can earn than her own integrity. She is certainly not a person I admire.

— somewhere in the USA
6:32 pm September 19th, 2008

Ty?
Actually it has been shown that the people that are “jealous” and “want what Kate has” are the Faithful Fans.
They don’t see Kate for who she really is, because they are just like her and they want what she has and they would be right there with Kate exploiting their kids for cash and freebies too.
They make excuse after excuse after excuse for Kate’s abusive and greedy behavior in spite of all the evidence that Kate is a nasty rude person and mother.

Judith? Kate’s book thats is soon coming out wasn’t written by her either, Beth Carson wrote it all and Kate used her and threw her away like trash too. If she didn’t write her own autobiography, she surely didn’t invent these recipes.

It is very telling that Kate’s entire family have turned down cash from the National Enquirer to tell their stories so as not to EXPLOIT Kate. Yet Kate’s actions have left her whole family up for public scorn, ridicule and scrutiny (including many false speculations that Kate’s Dad is toothless trailer trash) But Kate still EXPLOITS her own family and kids to get fame and fortune.

Teresa Rose- Where do you see abuse? And if you are going to say by Kate and Jon having these kids “working” 3 times a week, dont bother! Do you really believe those kids are being abused by doing what they normally do on a daily basis? Just because it’s filmed doesnt mean they are breakin a sweat and workin in a sweat factory! It’s 3 days week people!!! Thats nothing..You poeple act like there are no children on any other show that you watch right??

— Ty

It seems like the faithfull fans would be you people that google her every move and watch every show over and over again to see what she’s doing wrong! Think about it..I watch their show every Monday night at 7:00..you watch her show every single time it comes on and you even replay it on your DVR or your Tivo and count how many cheese puffs she feeds her kids!!! Thats Pathetic…And to boot you people even use her sayings..like Lordy-Bee and Helllooooo and whatever else…Ive even seen people on the GWOP saying “oh I despise that woman but does anyone know where she bought her purse at..its cute”…hahaha..Thats funny stuff right there!!

— Ty
7:12 pm September 19th, 2008

Ty?

Oh lets see.

Blatant favoritism of certain children over others.
Blatantly not showing the boys affection or attention.
Calling her own boys icky and gross in clear earshot of them.
Driving the kids 75 miles to Jenkintown, pa to make Birthday cupcakes then withholding those cupcakes from her 3 boys while the 3 tup girls ate theirs in front of them while the boys cried.
Threatening to throw away a child’s security item while he freaks out cause he accidently got a little gum on it.
Not punishing one for the same crime that another got punished for.
Punishing a child for asking for anything twice.
Taking a child to a furniture store for a photo op when he had impacted constipation and was in clear pain and sweating to shop
for freebie bunk beds. Jon had to further humiliate the poor baby by dislodging the fecal impaction on camera in the van in the parking lot for eternity on film.
Removing all family members and cousins from their lives because Kate has psychological issues herself, and instead of seeking therapy, and working out the issues maturely, choses to selfishly hurt the children by banishing all their cousins and loved ones.
Not letting the Tups have any little friends in the neighborhood. Even going so far as to scream at little kids that ask to play with them from the neighborhood to “get off my property!”
Refusing to get one of her kids into therapy that is showing clear signs of problems cause she doesn’t want it to spoil her Perfect Supermom image.
Allowing a TV show and Director to install hidden cameras in her children’s rooms to catch the tups in private moments without their knowledge.
Hitting and degrading their father in front of them.
Transfering her own silly fears and phobias onto her children.
Blaming Mady for things she didn’t do and giving her a complex.
Never giving Mady cheers when she does good things.
Punishing a child for having accidents in his pants so much that he hides the dirty pants from her.
Teaching your kids to lie on national Tv, to cover up other lies to do Damage Control.

Lastly, putting your kids on a tv show so you can buy a multi million dollar house and free spa days, hairplugs and teeth whitening.

PS-Of course now that the PR person/Image Consultant has started sanitizing the show, this stuff isn’t being shown on the show much recently. And the PR team has told Kate to hug her boys more and not hold Hannie (her fave) as much, but Kate’s hair isn’t gonna change it’s stripes, and I’m certain that she hasn’t changed off camera due to her nasty treatment of fans that meet her off camera.

8:58 pm September 19th, 2008

Wow! Clever Kate - all by herself she thought up the innovative idea of stickig little notes in her kids’ lunches. Not! I was doing that over 30 years ago when my kids were brown-bagging lunch to elementary school. I saw the episode where she first discussed the notes and then she read aloud the note she wrote to Maddy. I wonder if she uses the same notes over and over again to save her energy for bigger more important things.

9:03 pm September 19th, 2008

the people who take joy from slagging Jon and Kate amaze me.

She is a stay at home mom now (she was a nurse)… with 8 kids the cost of childcare would be more than any RNs salary. Jon does have a job.

They don’t have a chef… on the few days/year that there is taping in their house then there is ‘craft services’ of course.

They are getting freebies yah, that’s fine. It is a novelty now and will wear off as the kids grow then they are stuck with the expense of raising 8 teenagers all at once (just think of the grocerybills…then there are all the other MANY expenses of raising kids…back to school costs are on average $200-300 per kid…TIMES EIGHT!! So they are enjoying their ‘15 minutes of Fame’ I would if I was given the opportunity too!!

9:07 pm September 19th, 2008

Kate Gosselin “developed” these ideas? These are really simple basic recipes that many moms use. I’m on the fence with the verb choice here. Anyhow, I have to give this article 2 thumbs down because this is a mother who thinks allowing millions of viewers of TLC and YouTube see her children every day and every week is fine. Her lack of concern for the safety of her brood is creepy, to be honest. She is not someone I would ever look up to and I would definitely NOT take advice from her. I cannot believe her 15 minutes aren’t over and done with yet. I think the battery in the clock must be losing power because time is dragging on here. How many more Americans will continue to watch the show that shows such unloving and mean-spirited behaviour? Thanks anyway but I think from here on in, I’m going to “develop” my own sandwiches.

— Michelle
9:31 pm September 19th, 2008

Wait..Kate COOKS? Who knew? I thought she only bitched, complained, pimped out her kids and yells at her jobless husband? I thought she had a personal chef? Oh that’s right SHE DOES! Like we believe Kate does anything around that house except boss everyone around and laugh all the way to the band. Shame on you TLC for letting this ridiculous show continue on as long as you have. Let those kids have their lives back, and make those 2 deadbeat parents get jobs.

— K.K.
9:39 pm September 19th, 2008

These 2 parents are really sad.
They need to get jobs.
Real jobs, not the job of selling their kids out for money.
These kids are going to have so many problems when they grow up.
It’s hard enough to go through school, kids can be mean.
Can you imagine the teasing they’ll get for the way their mom is?
And the way their dad is such a wimp on TV every.single.episode?
And the times they’ve shown these kids in the underwears.
And going potty
And taking a bath.
And vomiting.
And screaming and crying.
And being belittled by their mother.
And being called gross (boys are so gross, right Kate?)
My goodness, these poor poor kids are going to get reamed by their peers.
We can only hope they’ll be taken off the air, and soon.
These sick parents just don’t have a clue for what the future holds for them.
People think Mady is bad.
Can you imagine the emotional mess the others will be?
Especially Joel and Alexis.
Hannah and Leah are so favored by Kate.
The rest just fall off her radar.
Yikes.
So so sad.

Teresa Rose- All you did was nit pick at the small stuff..Just because thats the way they showed it on the show doesnt mean thats exactly what happend ..Its easy to get caught up in all the rumors when you read all the blogs going on about her every second you get! Teresa how about you do this for once, go to your DVR and watch all the episodes again ( because i know you have them all recorded!) and write down all the times she does hug the kids and plays with the kids..Stop looking for negativity in the episodes and i bet you will find more loving moments then you think. All this showed me is that you watch way to much t.v..lol

10:45 pm September 19th, 2008

Oops! Almost forgot!

Kate has successfully given her children developmental delays by not teaching them to hold scissors or allow them to use markers or crayons, which has been noted several times on the show by people that have tried to teach them arts and crafts and by the children’s artwork on their site.

Supermoms don’t stunt their own children’s growth for their own silly mess phobias.

While I appreciate the work the Gosselin PR machine is doing in their efforts to combat Kate’s poor public image, I think it’s too bad that newspeople are helping them try to bail out the sinking Gosselin $hip.

None of these recipies are all that new or exciting. I am glad to see that the sextuplets are going to preschool though. Hopefully the boys will get some nurturing from their teachers, and the girls will learn some modicum of self-control when they start screeching at and hitting their classmates.

Good parenting is not achieved by birthing higher order multiples. Good parenting involves caring more for your kids than for the money you can make by filming them 3 days a week year round. Good parenting does not rely on taking trips all over the country so there is something to show on TLC. Good parenting is about love and concern, not sandwiches.

Kate is not, from what I have seen, a good mom, much less a Super Mom.If the PR group manages to fool everyone into buying what they’re selling, I will call them Uber-Super PR people.

Don’t buy the hype Judith. Look around the net and see what you find to read, then make your own decision based on more than a TV show.

I honestly feel people who do not see something wrong with the way the Gosselins have chosen to sell out their home life are not thinking deeply enough about the issues surrounding children living in this manner. They have constant gawking wherever they go. Is that good? I believe these children may unfortunatly live the rest of their lives with “fans” wanting updates and the constant pressue of “where are they now”? Ask a former childhood star what hell that is like to live with. Their parents are putting them in a position where they will be forced to carry a very heavy burden over their entire lifetime and it is unfortunate. People should not shut up about this exploitation. They should take every opportunity to point it out…for the sake of the children.

Judith, you may be interested in this article: http://blog.psychic-wisdom.net/2008/09/20/a-recipe-for-disaster/.

In the future I would suggest you actually doing some research on those “experts” you are looking to feature.

Kate Gosselin and her husband, along with TLC, Figure 8 Films, and about 50 corporate sponsors, are nothing but adult greed mongers that look to children as nothing more than chattel to be exploited to the highest bidder.

You can add your publication to that list.

Congrats!

To all of you citing all of these websites to back up your “facts” the only real source you can use is Julie, as none of the others can prove that they even know the family, and she and jodi are crying “exploitation” and then joining in every chance they get(Jodi is at least guilty of letting Julie speak for her). Can you really not see that a website that allows people to make fun of these children and their parents are just as guilty of exploitation as they claim the parents are?

Julie has said that the constant snarking on the children (ie calling joel a serial killer and mady a brat)are no big deal, that people are reading too much into it. Really? How could anyone who truly loved those kids think that was okay? Think Julie would feel the same if they were talking about HER kids?

I’m just saying, when you read some of this stuff, you have to consider the source. When you see a family member defending people who say horrible things about children while blogging to anyone who will read it that she’s CONCERNED FOR THOSE SAME CHILDREN, you have to wonder what the motive is. I have seen comments from people who also claim to know them and say the Gosselins are good people. They are often ignored because A) they can’t PROVE that they know them (how ironic)and B) The ones who are interested in this mess only want to hear the bad stuff.

I think that there is some truth to what is being said about them but think about this: How many people in YOUR life would start a blog to make fun of you and your kids because you maybe weren’t so nice to them? If they did, wouldn’t that say more about them than it says about you? Would you want these kinds of people in YOUR life?

Where exactly is this proof that Kate has a chef? I have yet to hear anyone post a source on this info except for a blog by a bitter woman. I have no doubt that Jon and Kate do a vast majority of the cooking. Somebody, please post something other than heresay that Kate has a chef.

Check out J&K’s website, Kate says it herself that they have a chef. Then again we all know Kate doesn’t always tell the truth, so I guess that may be why you don’t believe it.

“Check out J&K’s website, Kate says it herself that they have a chef. Then again we all know Kate doesn’t always tell the truth, so I guess that may be why you don’t believe it.”

Sorry, but a Kraft service table does not qualify as a personal chef. Nice try, though.

Oh please. She doesn’t plan meals anymore. They have craft services bring food in 3 or 4 days a week and an organic chef stocks the freezer the other days. She is such a tool… and my neighbor.

I don’t understand all of the “jealous” arguments when it comes to J&K +8. What on God’s green earth would people be jealous of when it comes to the voyeuristic, narcissistic, life they have created?

Lola,
Well it’s not a “Kraft” service, but I won’t correct your spelling. Ok, so someone cooking for the “cast” 3 to 4 times a week doesn’t count. Sorry.

By the way, I was just reading about how much Jon and Kate make a year on http://sixgosselins.blogspot.com/ Pretty interesting stuff!

I was an avid viewer of this show until I realized that the kids were the entire show, and by watching I was passively supporting their exploitation. Judith, in all the episodes that I viewed I never saw Kate actually prepare or serve a sandwich, so I find it hard to believe that she should be considered an “expert” on this subject. If you had interviewed her regarding her pancake recipes I’d find that information half way credible, but sandwiches…no.

Ty~ Most typical people (as in functional adults) in the USA value and protect children to the highest degree. I just can not believe that anyone would consider how the Gosselins support their large family as healthy or in the best interest of these minor children. J and K could and should get real jobs to support the kids that they felt they needed to have. It’s called being the parents, people. Oh, and nurses can and do make good money (I know I am one)…it’s called weekends and off hours(day care problems solved). For all you Gosselin Fans, do you support your kids or do you expect them to support you? Enough said

“She is a stay at home mom now (she was a nurse)… with 8 kids the cost of childcare would be more than any RNs salary. Jon does have a job.

They don’t have a chef… on the few days/year that there is taping in their house then there is ‘craft services’ of course.”

Come on. He doen’t have a job other than the show. They don’t tape a few days a year; they’re shooting 50+ episodes for this upcoming season. They are shooting 3-4 days a week for 10 and 12 hours. Do you realize the amount of footage it takes to get enough usable for that many shows? Craft services are there and the chef who cooks for craft services stocks their freezers. It’s okay. They are riding that gravy train. Her taking about packing lunches is a hoot. PB and apple, who’d a thunk it!

An expert? This woman doesn’t know what organic is, yet constantly announces that’s all they eat, and thinks fiddler crabs in NC grow up to be Alaskan King Crabs! She is not that bright and hardly an expert on nutrition. She fills her kids with juice and wonders why they have no appetite and have sugar crashes throuhout the day.? Was she really an RN? Scary.

Well, if you can’t stand the heat, Judith……….ah, you are a foodie, you know the rest.

Correct me if I am wrong here, Judith, but as an editor I am sure that you are well seasoned in researching those you write about and/or interview.

You say you watch the show, fair enough. Is that where your research on Kate Gosselin began and ended?

Because I have to tell, you, Judith, one Google search would have scored you the history of this KON. If you still chose to write about parents and corporations that wallow in the blatant exploitation of children, you and your publication either wanted a piece of the pie, or you were counting on a dumber than dumb audience.

I am voting for the former, and as such, shame on you.

Kate an expert ?? An expert in what??? Sandwich making?? Cooking organic?? What are her credentials Judy????? Did you catch the episode when Sara Snow came to visit her to teach HER to cook an organic meal? LAST SEASON. What a joke. Looks like the PR firm that they hired is trying to repair their reputation. Too many people can see through Kate and Jon, no PR firm can repair that.

Judith, Let me offer my apology…I did see Kate prepare peanut butter and fluff(natural)sandwiches for their family picnic lunch. I wonder why she didn’t include that healthy recipe? I guess she does have some expertise in this area. Maybe she could get a real job preparing and selling sandwiches, and let her kids get back to enjoying their childhoods.

6:28 pm September 20th, 2008

Cindy O- Whats wrong with the way they raise their family? All you can say is that they have their kids on tv making the money, well are you going to tell me that any other tv show you watch dont have kids in it? Are you advocating for all the kids on tv or just the Gosselins? I think the Gosselin kids are very well taken care of, they are Not abused they seem healthy, their clean, they have nice clothes, nice house..whats the problem? So what if they make their money doing the tv show..theres alot of kids that are on tv doing the same thing!

— Ty
7:08 pm September 20th, 2008

Ty~ Kids who participate in “reality” based tv shows are not protected by the same laws that govern your run-of-the -mill kids acting on everyday tv shows(aka actors). The protections on time, conditions and economic rewards are not applicable to the Gosselin children like they are for the child actors that I’m sure you’re comparing them too. These kids could be filmed 24/7/365 if their parents so elected. The kids have no say or economic advantage in this show. Please do not tell me that you would advocate for or support this lack of regulation and protection for these kids (or any others for that matter). Do you have any idea of the true meaning of exploitation…all the worse when carried out at the hands of those who are suppose to protect you, your own parents. Think about it!

— Cindy O
8:02 pm September 20th, 2008

Cindy O,
Thank you for being a child advocate and caring about children. It seems that some people don’t have a lot of common sense and understand it doesn’t matter if a woman can make her kids PB sandwiches, if she allows those children to be filmed naked and at private times and then those pictures are shown on youtube so that pervs can see their private parts. Oh yes, their private parts were shown and who do you think taped it, gee their film crew? Well duh. Yep J&K are truly looking after their kids. Really people, before you worship Kate, take a long hard look at what she has allowed to happen to her children. No one is jealous, they are just fed up with the way this woman treats her family and friends and then other people call her an “expert”. Oh yeah, she is an expert alright.

— Screechy
9:08 pm September 20th, 2008

Cindy O - There is nothing wrong with what the Gosselins are doing..Almost every show on TLC or Discovery Channel have children in it and those are all reality shows also..Its 3 days a week people and their doing what they normal do everyday..you guys make it seem like they are being forced to work hard and sweat blood and tears…they are getting paid to play outside and do what children do!! Fight for kids that are being abused in your own neighborhoods…go feed homeless children…help children get off the streets in your area! Turn off the tv and do something other then harrass the Gosselis because they have it better then you with 8 kids!!!

— Ty
10:04 pm September 20th, 2008

10:35 pm September 20th, 2008

Ty,

You asked above “Are you advocating for all the kids on tv or just the Gosselins?” I belive neither is a great situation, however the Gosselins is much worse then the average young actor on TV. You are not seeing the differences between other children on TV and the Gosselin’s children. What other children are being filmed in THEIR HOME as much as the gosselins? If the Gosselins apparant long term plans which include 50 episodes the upcoming season come to fruition, what other CHILDREN in the history of modern day media have been filmed to the same extent as the Gosselins within THEIR OWN HOME? Please name them. The key difference in my mind between the Gosselins and the others on TV are that the Gosselins are allowing the very place which should be the ultimate place of refuge and peace for their children to be invaded by literally millions of viewers each week. At what point will the children’s young minds switch to permanent “actor” mode? Surely Cara and Mady are old enough and their behaviors at least at certain times have been swayed by the fact a camera was pointing on them. It could be a normal childhood moment but because the camera was on them they either suppressed an emotion or exploded becayse they knew they were “on stage” and there was no escaping that “stage” because it was in their own home. There was no way to escape it. You don’t find that sad????? You would of liked coming home tired after a long day at school, when you only eight years old, and had a camera zoomed in on your face? What mental problems could this cause a young mind eventually? Do you not think this could impact a devolping mind in a negative manner?

It make me sad as I do feel the perpetuation of this family’s media machine could cause long term mental problems for their children. Will mom and dad stick around for that “show” or will they cut them loose once they come of age? They apparantly are good at cutting off family members. The parents will have all the earnings and the children will be left in mental ruins with no resources of their own for therapy, etc.

summertime- like i said before..its 3 days a week and they get paid to do what they do normally…If you guys really cared for those kids, you wouldnt belittle their parents and put the kids down on blogs. The show will only last so long. And as long as you people keep watching their show everytime it comes on and googling her name then you people are whats keeping the ratings up and helping them in the long run!

— Ty
10:56 pm September 20th, 2008

“whats keeping the ratings up and helping them in the long run!”

Ty,

You don’t get it. That’s not helping them. Money is not the most important thing to those children nor should it be to their parents. Helping them would be getting the show cancelled ASAP. Anyone who cares one bit about the children or parents should want them to stop the exploitation of their family. Jon and kate are hurting themselves as well. I think as a society we should not allow or embrace the exploitation of children on reality TV. Perhaps Jon and Kate will realize this and just back out of the whole thing. I believe that could still be done with some dignity if they did it immediatly. People would respect that decision. Moving into an 8,000 square foot home courtesy of their production company for the rights to their families private moments, is not respectable or dignified. I believe that would be the end of their TV show anyway. How are they going to explain that move the rest of their fans? I think that will come off as very tacky. Anyhow, have a good night.

12:18 am September 21st, 2008

Hey Ty, I’m back. I was at a multi -generation family get together. Too bad the Gosselin kids don’t have the family support that my kids enjoy, but I digress. Please reread my posts, as I clearly stated, I no longer (4 weeks free) view the show because I can not be a passive exploiter of the Gosselin 8. I have done something their parents have failed to do, pull the plug on their show (at least in my home). Please do not think or say that I am jealous of K/J. It’s an insult. My husband and I have been married 25 years, have 2 successful, educated, almost adult children and both have held lucrative jobs for close to 30 years. In fact, my husband is the general manager of a well known co. in Chicago, and I’m in healthcare. Our family is blessed and we (all 4 of us) truly want for nothing. This is not about jealousy, Ty. It’s about what is right. I just can not fathom expecting my young children to work to support our family…these parents are young, strong and able- bodied. They should support the kids that they felt they needed to have, by working at self-supporting jobs. I do not have 8 kids, only 2 but that decision in itself was a choice. J/K decided on (even sought multiples). They gambled big time and hit the multiples jackpot. Now they need to own up to their parental responsibilities, get real, paying jobs and get off the small backs of their children. Because, as I’ve said before, it’s the right thing to do. Jealousy no, honesty, yes!

— Cindy O
4:10 am September 21st, 2008

I am really sorry to be back, but Ty you really don’t get it. If you don’t live beside the constant circus and the main attraction (Screeching Mother who sits A LOT), you don’t see. It’s their LIFE. The show is their LIFE. They are not doing anything resembling what normal large families do. They have fixed studio lighting, matching (donated) outfits, craft service tables, NO family or friends, no outside employment. They have created something completely out of the ordinary. Their kids are not (protected) child actors who can walk off of the set, they live on it. This article is about her submitting recipes and being an expert on school lunches, which is a real stretch.

9:13 am September 21st, 2008

Cindy- if you are done with the show then why do you keep blogging about Kate Gosselin? And as for them not having family in their lives, you dont know that for sure..you are going by what you read on the blogs.

Mythreesons- You couldnt help coming back because you are obsessed with Kate Gosselin, thats why you are back! And like everyone else..all you keep mentioning is that they get donated stuff and blah blah blah..they have income they are set!! “summertime- NO YOU DONT GET IT!!!If you want their show cancelled then stop watching them everytime the show comes on!! Stop googeling her name stop blogging about them stop Tivoing them and rewind it 20 times to find faults…Just Stop already!”

Ty, I don’t watch it anymore. I don’t have TIVO. I don’t care about their personalities or marriage. I only care about the fact that children are allowed to be exploited and essentially THEIR CHILDHOOD sold to the highest bidder. I want the show off the air for that reason, and that reason only. Are you so shallow not to even acknowledge this could harm the children? Why would that be? What would make someone want to so naively support this situation? I am truly baffled by that.

Hey those of you who are so convinced this is “exploitation” or “child labor”, and do so care about the kids as you claim you are, why not report them to Child Protective Agency or whatever such governmental entities in PA? That would be more worthwhile of your time instead of just fighting some meaningless online flame war? I am sure if you have a real case backed up by sufficiently solid evidence, the authorities would do something about it.

— Bebetoto
6:59 am September 22nd, 2008

Judith, Sorry your article’s been highjacked. I guess more judcious research would have better served you.

Summertime, I totally agree. it’s not about jealousy, money, have and have nots. It’s about what is right and the protection of minor children.

Ty, I try not to be judgemental, but you clearly are living vicariously through Kate Gosselin. In the USA it’s a given that adult parents support and protect their minor children to the best of their abilities. So, if your comments reflect your true beliefs, you think that it’s acceptable for children to support their parents. In the Gosselin household minor children supply 80% of the family’s income. Do you have 8 children under the age of 10, and do they work to supply your basic needs (food, shelter, clothing) as well as all of your luxuries(travel, golf, gym, spas)? Can you name any other family in America where this same situation exists? You asked me why I still follow the family despite the fact that I no longer watch the show. Well that answer is simple, because I believe that what these parents are doing is fundamentally wrong. I believe that I am doing what I can to educate others and curtail K/J poor practices. Because I do not actually know or interact with this family, I do not feel it’s proper to discuss cps. Those avenues must be explored by those more closely associated with this family than I. Maybe their family members and friends could chime in.

So many people have accused people that are critical of the Gosselins of being so rabid and mentally ill that we were capable of stealing the kids or hurting the family!
But the fact of the matter is that statistically, its the UBERFANS that don’t wanna hear the truth no matter what, that in the end turn on the “star” and hurt them.
Selena, John Lennon, Rebecca Shaffer, Bjork, David Spade, Brad Pitt, Jodie Foster, Versace etc.
All Killed, Hurt, or Stalked by FANS who “just wanted to be closer or were hurt by something the star had done after years and years of being very very loyal fans”.
Soap actress Andrea Evans was signing autographs when a fan grabbed her hair and cut off a huge chunk for a souvenir.
That was no HATER or CRITIC that did that! That was a FAN, just like you Ty.
Its the fans who cant see reality, that once it hits them they fall hard.
In Germany stars are presented as 2 separate people. In photos of Madonna in her lingerie and bustier up on stage they say “Madonna, Als Schauspielerin” (As Entertainer) and in photos of her jogging in NYC, “Madonna in privat” or Madonna als selbst” (in private or as herself) …In America the line is blurred so people watching Tv cant separate the tv life from the private and in the case of the Gosselins, the Tv studio wants it to stay blurred so they can feed you a stream of goods all on the backs of real children.
The sad thing here is that the Uberfans want the truth to go away. It is now obvious that they want the truth to go away so bad, that they are starting to stoop to the level of actually contacting the Gosselin’s Critics in real life! A critic is now being stalked. The fans have crossed the line! They want the truth to go away so they can get back to watching the very show that is exploiting the very kids they claim to LOVE SO MUCH, so in this case they are already loving too much.

Sorry, Judith. You were scammed by the Gosselin PR machine. Frankly, your bosses in St. Louis should expect better from you. Are you a PR writer or a reporter (or is there any difference anymore?).

The woman has more assistants than Mariah Carey, a personal chef, a stylist (a guess; do you watch the show?), the list goes on and on. I always find it as sad as I do funny that the women who defend Kate Gosselin the loudest are the ones who are the most removed from her way of life: they have kids with no help around the house, little money, etc.

GWOP isn’t a hate site. It’s a factual one, and that’s what the Gosselins and their apologists hate about it.

7:04 pm September 22nd, 2008

Hey Ty,

I think Judith is probably educated and bright enough to speak for herself. Kate Gossselin has 2 kids who just started 2nd grade, just how many sandwiches has she made and packed? It’s just logic and common sense; she’s no expert.

Abuse, like I said I’ve not ever actually witnessed it, as I’ve never actually spent time with the Gosselins, but if you have, feel free to claim to be their expert supporter. Exploitation of minor children on the part of their parents? Gosselins are guilty, guilty, guilty because I have actually seen that(as has most of America). And Ty, you could best believe that if I had intimate knowledge of what you would call abuse (your word not mine-I have never used that word in any of my posts) I’d be the first to make that call because I am a mandated reporter by law.

Kate is an amazing woman. She had eight children and does a fantastic job of showing them love and attention. Jon is a great interactive father too. I think that they don’t have enough help to give them time with their kids. I feel so sorry for Kate as she is always tired. Jon seems to be tired too, but I think he gets a little more alone time working from his home office. It’s great they can work from home and give talks to earn money for their family.

— Jello
10:29 pm September 22nd, 2008

Bebetoto~

? I do not quite understand your post…you might want to proof before you hit the submit button. I do not need to educate the public regarding exploitation. All they have to do is view the show and most functional adults would understand the premise. The education key is centered on the fact that reality show minor children are not covered or protected by the same regulations as child actors in general, and many people are unaware of this fact. The Gosselin chidren have no voice or economic advantage in this show. They make 80% of the income but have no say in how it’s invested, spent or even generated.

— Cindy O
10:46 pm September 22nd, 2008

Come on, don’t try to play dumb, Cindy, it’s a simple question, do you ACTUALLY know them or not? You said you do not ACTUALLY know them, yet you seem to know all the details of their personal finance. You can not have it both ways. Oh wait, maybe you can, Cindy.

1:49 am September 23rd, 2008

I can’t wait until this show is off the air and the parents are forced to get real jobs instead of living off their children. That day will come (hopefully soon after the new article about them EXPLOITING their kids in the National Enquirer) and then all the sheeples out there will have to get a life and leave these kids alone and let them live in peace and privacy. The pressure is on these 2 jobless parents to stop this show and do the right thing. I doubt they will, but one can only hope…

What’s great about all this is that they are getting so much bad press that they really have no where to turn. They smile and put on the fake act on TV but the truth is out about Jon and Kate Gosselin. They will fizzle away soon. Watch and see. More and more people are tiring of them. I have 9 other moms in my playgroup and at one time we all watched the show. Now only 1 of the moms watch and only because of the kids she says, but she thinks they are losing their cuteness. Us other 8 stopped watching because of the bad press (and we all can’t stand Kate) but we overlooked that because of the kids and Aunt Jodi. The way they treated her was horrible. It seems they have no friends or no real roots in family. Oh and Kate is so contradicting in all she says. She seems so cold and mean to the boys too. Ick. Can’t stand her anymore.

Fact is the kids aren’t that cute anymore, that’s true. They’re growing up and out of their “cuteness.” Kate is still a cruel thoughtless witch and Jon is still spineless. They are selling out their kids for profit. That is sad. I will be so happy when the show is off the air. I don’t watch it anymore nor Tivo it. The only time I hear about it is when our playgroup meets and the one lone mom talks about it. I think they’ll fade away soon, but I feel sorry for the kids when that happens. The pressue on the parents to now make money of their own will be enormous no doubt and they will probably take the stress out on each other and the kids. We’ve seen that happen on the show and no doubt it happens when the cameras are gone too.

For those of you who are appreciative of Kate’s sandwich recipes, I will freely give you a few more:

peanut butter and raisins
peanut butter and jelly (Remember: jelly, jam, and preserves
peanut butter and jam come in many different
peanut butter and preserves flavors! Be creative.)

1 slice ham and 1 slice cheese (Remember that ham and cheese can
come in many different
numbers of slices.)

Do NOT put the 2 slices of bread on the same side of the sandwich.

(I think that I might be eligible to be given my own tv show, be interviewed by food editors, and write my own cook book.)

I have another recipe to share:

Two pieces of ORGANIC whitish wheatish bread
1 slice of ORGANIC “yellow” cheese (2 pieces is too confusing)
soft ORGANIC margarine

Heat a frying pan with ORGANIC gas. Electricity will do in a pinch or if you’re poor.
Put the ORGANIC “yellow” cheese between the two pieces of ORGANIC bread and spread the ORGANIC margarine on one side. Put the margarined side down in the pan. While it’s cooking, margarine the other side. Flip it over when one side is brown and watch the other side cook.

Serve with 1 organic grape (2 if you haven’t had an ORGANIC lollipop) and a leaf of ORGANIC bib lettuce.

Don’t forget to turn off the ORGANIC gas… or electricity.

I’m a great sandwich maker.

WOW.
St. Louis, are you that naive?
We in Pennsylvania have been on to the Greedy Gosselins for
years now…..that’s probably why they can’t wait to high tail
it out of here! Oh that and the weather, god forbid there are seasons!
Kate Gosselin is the biggest mooching media whore there is…she put these
plans in motion to be a “supermom” while lying in bed in Hershey Medical
Center, calling media outlets and brokering deals.
The “recipes” you have posted as a part of the Grain campaign….Laughable!
Peanut Butter and Apple…who in their right mind needs a recipe for that?
This is not exactly an original concept folks, and certainly not one that Kate Gosselin deserves credit for.
Why don’t we ask the chef for HIS/HER recipes if we want any insight in to
this, er, family…..and I use that term loosely. Its a projected image, not “reality”.

Waist of space?
Its waste Jon, duh.

How does it go…you can put lipstick on a pig, ah, well, something like that, right?

Is this article some sort of joke? I am very confused. You said and I quote,”If you want to learn about something, ask an expert. When I wanted hints about packing school lunches, I asked Kate Gosselin.” Did you do any research prior to writing this article? What exactly is Kate Gosselin an expert in? She had a lot of children all on the same day. That certainly does not make you an expert in nutrition. In fact, from what I have seen her serve on her show, (a couple crackers and a slice of fruit or a few nachos with microwaved cheese on top) it seems she knows very little about nutrition. This is only her second year with kids in school needing a lunch. How is 9 months of lunch making for two kids considered enough to make one an expert? I am sorry, but this article is just a sham cooked up by the Gosselin’s new PR firm and you are the scape goat. If I want lunch making advice, I will seek it from someone like myself who has been a lunch making mom for over 30 years and knows what they are talking about. Maybe next time you should interview Kate’s organic chef for lunch making tips.

I forgot to add that if you are really interested in some good sandwich and salad recipes, get a subscription to Taste of Home Magazine. They have great, tested recipes submitted by people who don’t have chefs and actually do cook every day. It is a great magazine.

I agree with “NotthatKate”. Ty’s comments have the same poor grammar and run-on sentences similar to the Gosselin’s style of writing. So who is it? Jon? Or Kate?

Not really a comment about the article, but still… I can’t help but love the show! Mostly because I wish I could change places with Kate and be blessed with twins and sextuplets… and Jon. I think he’s hot, haha! Oh well, I do agree that she is not very nice nor does she seem like much of an expert in any area. But she picked a seemingly good guy for a husband and father. Lucky her :-)

I would have to agree Ty has way too much knowledge must be the closet job he has. Too bad Jon once you were called it was time to go.

You’ve GOT to be kidding! Kate never “developed” those sandwiches!
They’ve been around for YEARS.
By the way, to those of us who have watched that show for a couple of years; you should get your facts for your article straight.
Kate may at times make the two lunches at night for the twins….but she admittedly ALWAYS sleeps in late in the morning, and always has. Others like her husband Jon, or nannies get up and tend to the children first, before she wakes up. Actually, Jon always fixes her coffee and brings it to her in bed.
He said on the program this past season….that when the little ones started pre-school, he was going to NEED HELP from her, as he can’t get everyone off to school on his own. She blew him off about that idea.
He can’t do it all because he also bathes and shampoos all the kids, undresses them and puts them in bed. She doesn’t.
He gets them dressed in the morning and gets them off to school. She has hired help for the laundry, house cleaning, yard work and the food service is brought in approx. 4 days per week while they are filming. She has a personal chef, also.
You expect us to take advice from HER?
She can’t even get her “mother act” together. Better do some research next time you write an article.

Are you people kidding me? Who cares if they get help? I think she is an inspiration and a role model. All of you people sound like you are in high school and are looking for something bad to say about the “popular” kids just so you can make yourself feel more important. I think alot of you need to do YOUR research as far as the personal chef, the assistant, the gardener(you have got to be kidding), etc. Who cares if the recipes aren’t her “own”. She uses them. Haven’t any of you been asked for a recipe and then given one that you use alot…..She is only trying to be of help. I would give anything to be able to be home with my children and have my husband home as well, but unfortunately I can’t, so I have to live vicariously through her. And as far as them being money grubbing…would you honestly tell me that you wouldn’t take a handout, etc if it was presented to you (especially a FREE tummy tuck, come on….please…)And I honestly do not think the children are suffering in any way…..All of you who have posted mean and hurtful things need to GROW UP!!!!

I have never seen so many rude comments in my life. I love the show. I wish I could be that organized. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. And for the people that say neither Jon nor Kate work outside the home, you obviously don’t watch the show. He clearly works outside the home. So maybe you should do your homework. And I find it hard to believe that they have a personal chef or an assistant. You guys have way too much time on your hands.
