Osheaga find of the day: Santogold
On the intimate MEG stage we came across the supercharged musical melting pot that is Brooklyn’s Santogold.
Blending hip hop, punk and dub reggae, the band got the crowd dancing under sunny, breezy Montreal skies.
Wearing a Malcolm X shirt, lead singer Santi White grabbed the mic with authority and tore through their material while having fun. The whole band seemed to be having a blast, mixing world grooves with punk rock.
A playfulness shone throughout, as the band experiments with weird and wacky noises, some nonsensical screetching by White and even a little dog barking when the song calls for it. This is a band whose MySpace page claims that they are ‘already receiving weighty club rotation and airplay in urban Afghanistan … and a post-war folowing on the International Space Station Muir.’
White’s voice (a cross between MIA and Siouxsie Sioux) and stage presence is what should propel Santogold to greater popularity — on this planet, that is.
