Get Gory at the Atomic Halloween night
Detroit garage band the Gore Gore Girls like to tear through their catalog with all of the subtlety of a chainsaw cutting metal.
The eight-year-old band molds their sound around two genres: âMotown era girl groups and seminal Detroit punk bands,” according to lead vocalist Amy Gore.
These elements are front and center in their single âAll Grown Up” off their 2007 album Get the Gore. âFox in a Box,” is more Ramones than Ronettes and âWhere Evil Grows” carries a 60s psychedelic vibe. The lo-fi production throughout gives the garage/punk music its authenticity.
Still suped up about the record, Amy commented that it was the band’s best effort. âI loved the experience (recording.) It was a great time and a great record. We’re itching to get back into the studio.”
The girls, who toured with the Cramps a while back, is made up of two sisters, Amy and Lianna, two instrumentalists and the ‘Gorettes’ singing backup.
âMarlene and I are sisters in rock and roll so being in the same band is no problem,” said Amy, adding that they didn’t follow Motown closely growing up on Detroit’s east side.
âI didn’t even realize that the Motown studios were from Detroit,” said Amy. âIt wasn’t until high school when I developed a personal taste for it.”
Amy said she keeps tabs on her favorite Motor City bands while spending much of her time on tour.
âI do have some favorites. Human Eye is an experimental punk rock band made up of remnants of the Clone Defects,” she said. âAlso, the Red Orchestra, which is Miss Alex White’s backing band.”
I asked Amy how she’d describe her live act.
âDebauchery, release, abandon, loud. …Was that a haiku?”
