NYC’s Fiery Furnaces play Duck Room Monday
The Fiery Furnaces, a brother-sister duo out of NYC, comes through town tonight, playing at Blueberry Hill with fellow Thrill Jockey band Pit Er Pat.The Furnaces sound is a combination of White Stripes garage blues and the Hold Steady-style spoken lyrics. There is a lot more going on musically than either of those bands, though, as songwriter Matthew Friedberger experiments liberally with tempos, instruments and melodies. Their latest album, âWidow City” is more accessible than past releases, containing early-1970s riffs fused with Chamberlin M1 keyboards.
Singer Eleanor Friedberger sings/speaks rapidly to keep up with the quick beats, telling stories and covering a wide variety of subjects.
Matthew told me that he and his sister didn’t play much music together as kids.
âEleanor only started making music after she left home. We didn’t play a lot of music as kids, but probably more than others. When we were older, by accident, we moved to the same city (NYC). We had rock music in common but we hadn’t thought of starting a band until we started playing.”
Asked how he would describe the band’s sound, Matthew said they have a dual focus.
âI’d describe the music as being heavy on storytelling and audio puns. We switch around a lot when trying to tell a story, but we function as a real rock band too.”
The band will appear tonight as a quartet with Jason Loewenstein of Sebadoh on guitar and Bob D’Amico on drums.
