St. Louis hasn’t been known for its underground hip hop, but local group Earthworms is laying down roots here with the release of its second album, “Bottle Full of Bourbon,” tonight at the Lucas School House. The disc is full of soulful, old school jams with singable choruses and great horn sections. The group uses live instruments onstage to accompany rappers Mathias, Kama and Black Patrick.  It should be a kickin’ time at the Lucas.  Kevin Johnson’s preview:   http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/entertainment/columnists.nsf/kevinjohnson/story/621F298CB5E61A8E862573D9000C5982?OpenDocument  www.myspace.com/earthworms  Other dates:

Feb 15 - Vintage Vinyl (In-Store Performance)

Feb 16 - Lucas School House

Feb 27 - The Gargoyle (F5 Records Showcase)

I read about a former St. Louisan making music history and I guess the man in question isn’t black enough for coverage there. I read about a fella named Walt Winston who had scored the Top 6 hits on Beta Records Folk music charts and his own hometown dont even want to acknowldege his record and his history! Every time I read this site or this paper its always about a black, hip hop artist who hasnt had any top ten hits let alone a #1 hit and Winston has had 7 of them in the last year all on Beta Records website or MP3.com. His little sister of the Ultra Violets hasnt had a #1 but I forgot shes white too. I guess, if an artist is white and achieves something the Post won’t touch it!

Mr. Clarke, you’re right in your observation that when a hometown snubs one of its own like that I would think that that Mr. Winston deserves a far better hometown than St. Louis and the City of St. Louis and The St. Louis Post Dispatch ought to be ashamed of itself and its an embarrssament for a major city like St. Louis not to honor someone like Mr. Winston who has held his head high and has had class throughout his entire life. His family was victimized by cops in a horrendous crime way back when and they got away with it because the prosecutor was too chicken to go after those renegade cops, and his family was dragged through the mud by the press and as a result Mr. Winston has never said anything about it.
I’m glad his new hometown of Chadron, Nebraska whereever it is loves and respects this guy and he will be an asset to that community. I’m not quite so sure its a racial thing, as much as it could be that Mr Winston has a target on his back and is wise not to go back to a town that didn’t want him and they don’t deserve him because he is far better than that!
I saw Mr. Winston and his band play at Johnny’s in St. Louis and I remember that night like it was yesterday and he always took the time to talk to the people in the crowd and even sign autographs and I always saw him attend events for charity.

Gentlemen:

I’m not worried if this paper covers my making music history or not as it’s their perrogative so don’t start anything negative here, please. I had my time there in St. Louis, and I left St. Louis to seek better opportunities and I have found them elsewhere, and that’s just the way it is. It’s really sad that small-mindedness still exists in the world. Secondly, I didn’t expect my old hometown to wrap its arms around me anyway, as they didn’t embrace me back then, when I lived there and never really felt accepted there at all, and I’m sure they don’t want me around now. Furthermore, if the Post don’t want the story then so be it! If you think I’m bitter about St. Louis, then you really didn’t know me at all, as I’ve said, I could care less. I know about the history I made a few weeks ago and again today and I still have a few friends there and we all agreed, that this is not the same St. Louis I grew up in and it’s changed forever and I will take Paul McCartney’s advice and just “Let It Be”.
