monad3.jpgThe members of hard working punk n’ bluegrass band the Monads will toast the fruits of their labor Friday night as they release their Big Muddy Records (7 Shot Screamers, the Vultures) debut, “Ornery,” at the Off Broadway.

Like a bluegrass version of the Pogues, the band plays traditional instruments in a full-throttled, punk rock manner. Guitarist and vocalist Pat Eagan calls it “black and bluegrass.”

“That’s a pretty accurate name. It’s bluegrass but it’s tough,” said Eagan, citing Split Lip Rayfield and Carbondale’s Woodbox Gang as influences.

Recorded in Lawrence, Kan. with producer Mike West (Truckstop Honeymoon), “Ornery” captures the band’s frenetic live show, but also reveals a level of sophistication that can get lost in the shuffle live. You could also say the same about the songwriting.

“We spent a week recording all day, every day and it was the best experience,” said Eagan. “Our normal practices are pretty laid back. When we were recording it was just us in this room and we knew we had to be hitting everything. Our focus really shows up — what you hear on the record is us playing live together in the room. I’m really proud of how well came out.”

After starting out as a trio, the band added a fiddle a while back — a good move, as it adds some needed variation to go along with the steady chug of the steam train.

“We added Matt (Shivelbine) on fiddle and I give him a lot of credit,” he said. “He had to learn a lot in a hurry. As a four-piece we can do a lot more and be more genuine sounding.”
