duke4.jpgFans attending the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club show on Friday are advised to get to the Pageant by show time (9 pm) to see soulful opener The Duke Spirit, out of the UK.

The raw, bluesy quintet will also play a free acoustic set and sign copies of their new album, “Neptune,” at Vintage Vinyl at 4 pm Thursday.

Dynamic lead singer Liela Moss’ voice is strikingly similar to Bjork’s. Moss is all Rachel Nagy in her delivery, though: Aggressive with with a bar room swagger and tambourine in hand.

The Spirit’s sound on the whole draws from punk, 90s alternative and 60s psychedelic and garage rock.

“I personally try to play a guitar style that sounds slightly darker, like two ships clanking up again each other or two engines working together,” said guitarist Dan Higgins (above right.) He counts the Rolling Stones, Jesus and Mary Chain and Sonic Youth among his influences.

By all accounts, the current tour is going much better than the Spirit’s first U.S. tour in 2006. Just weeks into it, their van was burglarized and all its equipment was stolen.

“It was an experience. It wasn’t just good or bad, but the price of an education, I guess,” said Higgins, who will become a father shortly, forcing him to take a hiatus during the next tour. “We went on with what we had left, which wasn’t much. But we didn’t leave with our tails between our legs. We left triumphantly.”
