Take another spanking tonight at Off Broadway
If you missed the Asylum Street Spankers last night, fear not. Our town has earned an extra night, as the Austin sextet will play the Off Broadway stage again tonight.
The Spankers have been delighting crowds with their mix of Vaudeville, bluegrass and musical theater for 14 years. The whole crew lives in Austin, where they got their start busking on Guadalupe Street (formerly called Asylum Street.) They are known for their wonderfully naughty wordplay on albums such as “Nasty Novelties” and “Spanker Madness.”
With over a dozen records to their credit, their latest is a children’s album (”Mommy Says No!”) that is far from milquetoast Barney fare. Boasting song titles like “You Only Love Me for My Lunchbox” and “Boogers,” the Spankers don’t pull any punches with the tykes ‘neither. One standout track is a raucous bluegrass take on Nirvana’s “Sliver” (AKA, “Grandma Take Me Home.”)
“It’s something we joked about for years because we’ve always been known for our bawdier, adult songs,” said lead belter and co-founder Christina Marrs. “Children have a broad range of emotions that people don’t give them credit for. The music is age-appropriate, but it’s not ABC Saturday morning cartoon crap.”
The band has been playing the Off Broadway for years, so the crowd knows the drill (shhhhh.) They are more of a theatrical group than a bar band and Marrs said that they are moving more towards a musical theater concept.
“It’s not much different than what we’re doing now, but we integrate stories about being a touring band with moderate success and managing to hold it together for all these years,” said Marrs, who was a baker before founding the band with Wammo. In one anecdote, they equate themselves to the circus’ elephant cleaner who’s sole job is to clean up dung. When someone asks him why he doesn’t look for a new job, he answers, “Why would I give up show biz?”
