may1.jpgNortec Collective Presents: Bostich + Fussible “Tijuana Sound Machine” (Nacional)

TJ’s leading electronica group updates traditional Norteño rhythms with ambient techno. The brass band oompah, fanciful noisemaking and organic beats are effective on the dance floor or for chillin’ at home. Follows up the quintet’s Latin Grammy nominated “Tijuana Sessions, Vol. 3.”

Tim Fite “Fair Ain’t Fair” (Anti-)

This scrapbook collage of folk, hip-hop and experimental is not for everyone, but has its moments. Some tunes are more cohesive (“Barber”) than others (“The Names of All the Animals”) and all contain biting social commentaries. Fite has Beck’s humor but not his pretty melodies. Standout track: “Sing Along.”

Mudhoney “The Lucky Ones,” “Superfuzz Bigmuff: Deluxe Edition” (Sub Pop)

Remember that morning in 1991 when you woke up with empty bottles all around, several broken items strewn about and a Mudhoney record still spinning on the turntable? Grunge’s forefathers are back with a new album and deluxe reissue of their first EP. On the new set, the garage sound is as fuzzed out as ever and Mark Arm’s moan hasn’t lost any of its muscle. None of the tracks stand out like the entirety of “Superfuzz,” but “I’m Now” and the title track come relatively close. The 1988 re-issue, celebrating the band and label’s 20th anniversaries, comes with extra singles, demos, two 1988 live recordings and a peachy booklet.

No Age “Nouns” (Sub Pop)

This fuzzed out, lo-fi set from L.A. noise punk duo is strong but a bit lacking in hooks. The record alternates between aggressive guitar rockers and melodic, loop-filled musings.

Various Artists “Verve Remixed, Vol. 4” (Verve)

Top DJ’s re-imagine the great vocalists of jazz and beyond, including Billie Holiday, James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone. The results are silky smooth.

Firewater “The Golden Hour” (Bloodshot)

After a three year trip through the Middle East and Asia, Tod A and Firewater are back with this collection of alluring, Eastern-tinged songs. Devotchka fans will enjoy the theatrics.

3 Na Massa “3 Na Massa” (Nublu)

The São Paulo trio’s name (in the dough) is roughly slang for ‘tantalizing’ and these Latin and Bossa Nova beats will make your mouth water for more. 13 different female vocalists tell their stories through song, including CéU, Nina Miranda and Alice Braga.

Forro in the Dark “Dia de Roda” (Nublu)

Also from Nublu Records, a new EP from NYC Brazilian party band favored by Steve Earle and David Byrne. Colorful, tropical grooves with a little reggae and rockabilly thrown in.
