Exene’s Original Sinners play Tap Room Sat.
In moving to Missouri, punk godmother Exene Cervenka has certainly brought a bit of the wild side to our neck of the woods – from being married (to local rocker Jason Edge) by El Vez on a Mississippi river boat to making art from castaway objects culled from local thrift and antique stores.
The co-lead singer of the seminal L.A. band ‘X’ brings her main side project to town this Saturday at the Tap Room. Her Original Sinners will perform on the upstairs stage.
They’ll play some new tunes, songs from her other-other band, “Auntie Christ,” and maybe a few X songs. Their core material is a combination of roots rock and punk.
Cervenka said that she was thrilled to be able to tour the Midwest and not have to deal with lengthy travel times. Her new lineup consists of several longtime St. Louis musicians.
“We have Craig and Dennis from the Trip Daddies, Jeff Hess from the Geargrinders and Edge from the Honkeys,” she said from her 175-year-old farmhouse, located near Jefferson City. “It’s a St. Louis supergroup.”
When asked if it was tough teaching the new crew her songs, Cervenka said no problem. “It wasn’t hard at all. It’s a fantastic lineup.”
Cervenka has been busy readying a new album for Bloodshot Records, set for a 2009 release.
“I have a solo record coming out next year, so this will be the last Original Sinners show for a while,” she said. “The songs are done, I just haven’t made the record yet. The hard part’s done, now the fun starts!”
On the art front, Exene has current exhibits at the Claremont Museum of Art in L.A. (“VEXING Female Voices from East L.A. Punk”) and at New York’s DCKT Contemporary (“Sleep in Spite of Thunder,” ending July 18.)
“All of the work was Missouri-made in my barn,” she said of her mixed media works. “The barn is an amazing thing to have – we have a music space in there and an art space.”
When it comes to the upkeep of the almost eight acres they own, Edge handles most of the busy work, according to Exene.
“Jason deals with the land and property. He’s the foreman of our estate and I just do some chores.”
