dog2.jpgPsychedelic rockers Dr. Dog is one hard working band – and its been paying off of late.

Since being virtually unknown four years ago (and often assumed to be a hip-hop group), the Philadelphia-based band has busted out three critically-acclaimed records, most recently last week’s “Fate.” They’ll play songs from the new album at the Bluebird tomorrow (Wednesday) night.

They have played some of the biggest festivals on the planet, appeared on all of the late night TV shows and even sang the national anthem before a Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park last year.

“We had someone from the Phillies ask us and we actually got to do a test run at the Louisville Cardinals stadium before one of their minor league games,” said bassist and co-founder Toby “Tables” Leaman. “We did a three part harmony with two guitarists softly strumming. It was insane — by far the hardest song we’ve ever learned. The range is so immense.”

“Fate” is a thoroughly enjoyable blend of 1960s pop and soul-influenced gems. The songs are easy to like, as lead vocalist Scott “Taxi” McMicken sets the tone with a broad range of barks – sometimes tender, sometimes gruff. Behind him are plenty of Beach Boys-style backing vocals, distorted guitars, cool bass lines and soulful piano parts.

Like the last one, Fate was recorded in the band’s spacious second-floor studio and practice space in the Art & Industry building in Kensington area, far from the hustle of Downtown Philly.

“Our space is a a giant wooden room with woodshops below, and a metallurgy area,” said Leaman, who started making music with McMicken when they were both 15.

When asked how the new album differed from past efforts, Leaman said the songwriting and execution were taken to the next level.

“On a personal level, it’s more realized than other albums,” said Leaman. “On a song by song basis, I am very happy with it – there wasn’t any settling for ‘good enough’ this time around.”
