Sub Pop Records celebrates 20th birthday
Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, The Shins, Notwist and No Age.
What unites these bands of yesteryear and today? They are (or were) on Sub Pop records, of course.
The venerable Seattle label is currently patting itself on the back with 20 year anniversary celebrations. (Feeling old?)
A big concert happened earlier this month, but fans can go to the website and sign up for their Singles Club 3.0, a rejuvenation of a record-of-the-month club the label started way back in the late-1980s. Subscribers get a seven inch in the mail per month featuring bands such as Mika Miko, Notwist, Black Lips and Unnatural Helpers. The first installment, August 15, will be a pair of songs from Om.
According to the website, Seattle officials let the label fly a giant Sub Pop flag on the Space Needle and even painted the top of the tower
to look like a record.
