A few years back when singer and songwriter Vincent Marks was considering names for his new band, he settled on Chapters – an apt name considering his other artistic pursuit is fiction writing.

Marks still writes, but music has become his main gig. He said he is drawn to music largely because it allows him to get his voice out there without having to wait an eon or two to get published.

“I was really looking for an outlet for my fiction,” said Marks, who also has dabbled in noise rock. “As a writer, you don’t get out there until you have something published.”

Chapters will release their debut EP, “Wife,” August 8 at Cicero’s. The new wavers play dark, literary rock along the lines of She Wants Revenge and Joy Division.

Marks calls the 5-song EP ‘rock noir’ with story lines in the lyrics dealing with “sex, lies and videotape” type of material. When it comes to stage presence, expect the unexpected from Marks.

“I think of myself a non-musician and it was tough to sing while just standing there without an instrument,” he said. “I’d say I have a manic, herky-jerky stage presence as a result.”

Nice piece on a really up and coming band here in St. Louis. The CD release show should be a good one.
