Caribou, which played the Billiken Club earlier this year, has won Canada’s annual Polaris Music Prize. The award and $20,000 honors the country’s best album as chosen by a panel of 170 music insiders. The criteria looks at the album’s merits “without regard to genre, sales history or label affiliation.” Quite a departure from the Grammy’s – why do you Canadians always have to be so different?
Caribou, led by Dan Snaith, put out Andorra on Merge about a year ago.
Caribou beat out nine other acts:
Black Mountain - In The Future
Plants And Animals - Parc Avenue
Basia Bulat - Oh, My Darling
Stars - In Our Bedroom After The War
Shad - The Old Prince
Kathleen Edwards - Asking For Flowers
Two Hours Traffic - Little Jabs
Holy F* - LP
The Weakerthans - Reunion Tour
