This trio from Bloomington, Indiana consists of the burly Reverend, his wife, who rakes her washboard with a vengeance, and his little brother on the skins. Their old-timey, hillbilly sound is infused with the blues. The Rev. sings about trains (of course), religion and even Mama’s fried potatoes.

The Big Damn Band released its latest effort, The Whole Famdamnily, in August.

The famdamnily spends a lot of time on the road.

“We come from the same tradition that Charley Patton and Furry Lewis came from; they just took off with their instruments and went out into the world to see what would stick,” Reverend Peyton said on the band’s Web site (www.bigdamnband.com). “They sang about what they were going through in their time and we’re doing the same thing in ours.”

“When folks go to see a band perform, they want to come out to see a show and that’s nothing new,” Peyton explains. “Charley Patton was playing with his teeth and behind his head in 1930; now people say that’s punk rock, but they’ve been doing that for a hundred years. I think country blues was the first punk rock if you ask me.”

With St. Louis’ Monads opening, you may have trouble telling the bands apart. Do yourself a favor and check out the nearby Stable bar after the show. It’s a phenomenal space.
