Chicago soul band invades St. Louis airwaves, Gramophone this weekend
Get ready for Eli Jones weekend in St. Louis.
The Chicago soul/blues outfit will bring their three-piece horn section and powerful pipes of singer Stefanie Berecz to several venues here starting Friday.
Their debut album, Make it Right, is more smooth soul than blues and would appeal to fans of vintage Chicago and Stevie Wonder. Their sound also has a dreamy groove to it, a la Zero 7. Berecz’ vocal style has drawn comparisons to Joss Stone.
Vocally trained since age seven, Eli Jones is Berecz’ first band.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Berecz’ told me recently. “You treat your voice differently when you’re sing with a live band, especially this band with seven guys. They are all so musically talented and so diverse.”
Berecz is in the unique position of touring and working the music circuit as a new mother. Her daughter was born in August.
“It’s not too hard, she went on her first road trip recently – she’s a real roadie!” Berecz said. “Loud music doesn’t affect her, she sleeps through it all.”
We may see if the baby is sleeping when the band performs their first set tomorrow on Show Me St. Louis (3 pm.) After the TV gig, they’ll boogie to Decatur for a show Friday night before returning to St. Louis for two Saturday performances.
