A few thoughts on the AC/DC show

Now I know why they charge so much for tickets. Because the people will pay.

The Scottrade Center looked near capacity last night with the nosebleeds full as well (the top rim was closed off for Metallica.)

Was I the only one using my hands as a face shield as 54-year-old guitarist Angus Young did a striptease to “The Jack”? I found myself repeating, ‘please don’t let me see old man butt.’ Good God, that is one rock tradition I guess I’ll never understand. Ah happy endings – he stopped when he got to his AC/DC boxers.

Even though I was greeted with a pile of puke in the bathroom shortly after arriving, the crowd on the whole was rather tame. Especially compared to the 1981 Checkerdome show where, according to a review, there were multiple fights. (Angus went full monty at that one.)

Solid drummer Phil Rudd taunted smokers in the non-smoking facility by lighting up throughout the show. I guess they can’t kick you out if you’re in the band.

The extended guitar solo by Angus towards the end of the show left everyone’s jaws on the ground. I was a skeptic going in, but after that effort, I just had to stand and shout.

For him to be carrying on like that at the age of 53 defied logic. With sweat pouring off of him, he scooted from the mid-floor riser to the back of stage rafter and continued his assault without the assistance of any other instruments. He pulled it off briliantly.

Super-extended guitar solos can be a drag, but no one in that arena wanted him to stop doing what he was doing – at least as far as I could tell.

I didn’t go to the show. I couldn’t justify forking over a C-Note even though this band still rocks. I was lucky enough to see AC/DC with Bon Scott on the “Highway To Hell” tour and with Brian Johnson on the “For Those About To Rock” and “Blow Up Your Video” tours.

I laugh at the thought of Angus doing the strip-teae and mooning. I think they are beyond needing that and the schoolboy outfit.

I would love to see them as a straight forward blues-rock band in a smaller venue without the gimics. Save the money on the cannons and trains and give me lots of long jams, especially on album cuts like “Gimme A Bullet”, “Down Payment Blues”, “Ride On’, “Can I Sit Next To You”, “Nick OF Time”, etc. I wouldn’t mind seeing a show without “Shook Me”, “Highway”, “For Those About To …” if they really suprised and jammed.
