If you get to the AC/DC show on time tomorrow, you’ll find the Answer.
No, not to life’s greatest mystery, but a go-to support band hoping to headline similar venues someday.
Hailing from the small seaside town of Newcastle, Northern Ireland, the band has already shared the stage with the likes of the Rolling Stones, AC/DC and Aerosmith in front of crowds as large as 80,000. They also can currently ‘play’ one of their own songs on Guitar Hero.
Not bad for four guys who, not too long ago, were playing the Belfast bar circuit for rent money.
“You have to pinch yourself,” said lead singer Cormac Neeson. “The sheer scale of the tour – playing in front of 20,000 to 40,000 people every night for eight months – is just unbelievable.”
The Answer has also been lauded by Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, which Neeson said was gratifying for Answer guitarist Paul Mahon. Mahon’s chops are undeniably worthy of the compliment.
“Paul is one of the best guitar players I’ve ever come across,” said Neeson. “I appreciate how he incorporates a lot of top notch players, from Joe Satriani to Eric Clapton.”
The Answer’s blues-rock sound is derivative of the core Rock God set – AC/DC, Led Zep, Aerosmith, etc. — and, like Wolfmother, their anthemic hits carry many hooks.
Lead singer Cormac Neeson said the band’s sound is evolving, though, and the new record (Everyday Demons, Feb. 17) should answer any questions about the band’s authenticity.
“Everyday Demons is a rocker, as you’d expect, but a few changes of pace might surprise a few people,” said Neeson. “We wanted to make sure we sounded like the Answer and nobody else. We’ve been compared derogatively to Led Zeppelin and criticized for being too retro, but nobody can pin us down on this one. I hope very much that American people will give it a listen and feel the same way.”
