Los Campesinos! share double bill at Gargoyle Wednesday
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Energetic young Brits Los Campesinos! are part of a strong double bill Wednesday at Washington University’s Gargoyle Club. Playing with them is New Jersey’s rough yet melodic Titus Andronicus.Los Campesinos! hail from Cardiff, Wales, where the members met in college in early 2006. After making an early splash, they found themselves touring while school was in session. This made for some difficult studying patterns.
“One time while we were still at the university, we had to fit touring in while doing papers,” said bassist Ellen Campesino! (yep, they’re one of those bands.) “We had a London show and Ollie had an exam the next day so we all jumped back in the car after the show and got back to town by morning.”
Los Campesinos! effect-heavy, organized chaos sound caught on quickly and by August of 2006, they were opening for Broken Social Scene on tour. They didn’t originally set out to be a touring band, though.
“We’ve had more success than we deserve,” said Ellen. “It was just something fun to do and to fulfill all of the university stereotypes of forming a band. We didn’t aim in any way to tour and get a record deal.”
The seven-piece, featuring three female members, are known for juxtaposing dark lyrics with poppy, upbeat arrangements.
And speaking of juxtaposing, if you don’t attend the Gargoyle show you can catch a Titus Andronicus in-studio on 88.1 FM KDHX’s Juxtaposiiton hosted by Rob Levy at 9 pm Wednesday (archived at kdhx.org.)
Also, Los Campesinos! will put on a full electric band performance at Vintage Vinyl at 2:00 pm Wednesday.
