Out this week: Grizzly Bear, Phoenix
Matt Fernandes
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Grizzly Bear Veckatimest (Warp)

Veckatimest is the long-awaited follow-up to Grizzly Bear’s critically hailed album, Yellow House. Neoclassical composer Nico Muhly and Beach House singer Victoria Legrand contribute.

Phoenix Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Glassnote)
These are some of the most direct and enjoyable songs they’ve made to date. The two opening songs, the bopping “Lisztomania” and the buzzing “1901,” are so immediate and prone to habitual play that the remainder of the album is bound to be neglected.

Marilyn Manson The High End of Low (Nothing)
Manson tries to regain his dark throne once more, and it’s unlikely to work. The track titles read like Manson-by-numbers: “I Want to Kill You Like They Do in the Movies” and “I Have to Look Up Just to See Hell.” The Manson persona towers over everything else, and his two or three musical ideas are repeated throughout the disc.
