The Aussie duo with the funny name — An Horse - play a Sunday night special tonight at Off Broadway.
They play a straight ahead, charming style of garage rock with Kate Cooper providing heartfelt, confident vocals.
Cooper met band member Damon Cox as co-workers at a Brisbane record store in 2005 and shared a love of music. Before long they were jamming together. Their first break came early when they were invited to open for Tegan and Sara on tour.
Their funny name reminds me of English language signs you see all over Tokyo. The grammar is always just a little (or a lot) off. I’m told it’s just eye candy as most
I caught up with Cooper a few days back.

RC: Do you still live in Australia?
KC: We don’t really live anywhere right now, but when we’re done touring we plan to move to the US or Canada.
RC: Do you come from a musical family?
KC: Not really but my dad had a vinyl collection that I listened to a lot. Also, my grandma used to yodel on the radio.
RC: Is touring what you expected it would be like?
KC: It is. Damon and I both love touring. You have to love it otherwise it would make you crazy. I’m lucky to be able to see the world and meet people and play with Damon every day.
RC: How did you prepare for the Tegan and Sara tour?
KC: Very quickly. The fact that we had the tour coming up inspired lot of writing. There is a sense of urgency and excitement in the songs.
RC: Where did you come up with the name?
KC: It was a grammatical joke I had with my next door neighbor. An acquaintance of ours kept insisting that ‘an horse’ was correct grammar, the whole ‘hard H’ debate. Then my neighbor made a sweater for me with the phrase on it. People who get it, get it. I guess I’m a just a grammar nerd.
