Jazz/funk guitarist Presberg celebrates new album before hitting road

For Teddy Presberg, a little bourbon, a lot of funk and some timely environmentalism is just the right mix.

The local funkster will roll out his sophomore album this month at various STL venues. A national tour later this year is also in the works.

Musically, Presberg specializes in blending funk and acid jazz - a style that not many people are doing these days. Similar to guitarist Charlie Hunter, his jazz guitar chops are considerable and his improvisations should hold your attention live.

Presberg’s debut album, Blueprint of Soul, was recognized as a critic’s pick top 10 Album of 2007 by All About Jazz. The new album, Outcries from a Sea of Red (July 17), was recorded in his home studio in U. City and incorporates various household sounds.

“It gives the music a lot of personality when the sounds bounce off the kitchen walls as opposed to a professional studio,” he said.

Presberg has a degree in environmental studies and remains passionate about conservation. He has done green tours and worked with chefs in the area on sustainable food events, performing while they cook. A percentage of the proceeds from the new record will go to an environmental organization.

“I incorporate ‘eco’ components because its who I am,” said Presberg, a frequent performer at the Delmar. “I want to show people that it’s not hard to make green decisions.”

Presberg also is known for giving away free Bulleit Bourbon at certain shows as part of a promotional arrangement — always a win win. He got the idea to team up with Bulleit after being offered drinks at shows.

“I’d be playing with my eyes closed. When I’d open my eyes, 10 drinks would be on my petal board. People always want to buy me a drink, but I cant — I gotta play!” he said. “Here we’re saying, ‘Let us do the tasting and we’ll buy drinks for the crowd.’ It’s kind of subversive but it helps me continue to perform. It’s very low key, we don’t wear t-shirts or get in people’s faces.”
