Rams need to put it on the (”O”) line

THE WATERCOOLER
(Post-Dispatch columnists and beat writers share their thoughts on a question of the day.)

Question: What personnel area do you think the Rams most need to address this offseason?

JIM THOMAS
The Rams are set at punter and place-kicker. Everything else should be subject to review. But it all begins in the trenches, and with the exception of some decent pass blocking, the Rams showed nothing in the Arizona desert to change their major overriding need: Help on the offensive line. An offensive tackle — preferably one who can show up on time to team meetings — and a center should be a minimum requirement.

BILL COATS
Offensive tackle. Orlando Pace, 34, has been solid on the left side this season, but he’s showing signs of wear and tear. Alex Barron, the team’s first-round draft choice in 2005, is just an average right tackle. His contract is up after next season, and he probably won’t be back. The Rams need quality as well as quantity to shore up this vital position.

JEFF GORDON
I would start with offensive tackle, since elite prospects loom at that position at the top of the ’09 draft. Orlando Pace offers great risk with his age and injury history. As we saw this week, Alex Barron cannot be counted on. John Greco is better playing inside. Adam Goldberg is a fine back-up, but not a bulwark to build around. This is a difficult position to fill, so the Rams should make it the top priority.

BRYAN BURWELL
Anyone who has watched this sad offense bog down every week knows that the most glaring weakness is on the offensive line. Until they can put together a unit that can control the line of scrimmage, this team will continue to struggle.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Those guys are the experts, so who am I to argue? I know it all starts up front, but there’s just nothing sexy about an offensive lineman. Where are the “skill” position players? The Rams need those, too. I’d start with a young QB to build around … Georgia’s Matt Stafford or Florida’s Tim Tebow, anyone? Or maybe Sam Bradford, he looked pretty good last week against Mizzou — though I guess having 10 seconds or so in the pocket every snap helped. (By the way, my call for the “skill” positions probably shows why I’d be about as successful as Matt Millen as a GM.)

MIDDAY NEWS AND THOUGHTS

MADDUX HANGS THEM UP: Pitcher Greg Maddux announced his retirement Monday after 23 seasons and 355 victories (one more than Roger Clemens, by the way.) In his illustrious career, Maddux won four consecutive Cy Young awards from 1992-95 and made 8 All-Star appearances. Known more for his pinpoint precision than his power, Maddux also collected 18 Gold Gloves in his career. No surprise here, but Derrick Goold says, “There is a place in Cooperstown already reserved for Maddux. He’ll be in almost the moment he’s eligible.”

IT AIN’T SO FOR JOE: Fan favorites Joe Torre and Ron Santo did not receive the votes necessary from the Veterans Committee to be included in this year’s National Baseball Hall of Fame class. There were two different committees voting this year, one charged with voting on players that played pre-1943 and another on players who played post-1942. Joe Gordon, a nine-time All-Star second baseman for the New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians and an American League MVP (pre-1943), was the only candidate elected.

A look at the voting for those players who played post-1942 (48 votes needed):
Ron Santo - 39
Jim Kaat - 38
Tony Oliva - 33
Gil Hodges - 28
Joe Torre - 19
Maury Wills - 15
Luis Tiant - 13
Vada Pinson - 12
Al Oliver - 9
Dick Allen - 7

A FEW THINGS TO PONDER

PLAXICO SHOULD’VE USED ANOTHER WEAPON … HIS BRAIN: Detroit Free Press columnist Drew Sharp points out that NFL players are justifiably fearful for their safety because they are targets. He cites a number of incidents in the last year alone, including: the murder of Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor, Jacksonville offensive lineman Richard Collier losing a leg and being paralyzed after being shot 14 times, Oakland receiver Javon Walker beaten senseless in a robbery. And there are other examples. Sharp points out that athletes have the same right of self-defense as the general public, but he says the strongest defense rests with what lies between their ears rather than what they’re possibly packing in their pants.

THAT’S A BUMMER: I was hoping to get my first live glimpse of the Baby Blues playing together at tonight’s game vs. Nashville. But Tom Timmermann is reporting this morning that T.J. Oshie will not play. The exact nature of Oshie’s latest injury has not yet been disclosed, but he was injured during Saturday night’s game vs. Phoenix. Stay tuned for details.

TALK AMONGST YOURSELVES: The Associated Press has put out its annual ballot for newspaper editors to vote on the top male athletes of the year. Following is the list of candidates for 2008:
• Michael Phelps
• Eli Manning
• Kobe Bryant
• Padraig Harrington
• Lewis Hamilton
• Jimmie Johnson
• Rafael Nadal
• Usain Bolt
• Francisco Rodriguez
• Cristiano Ronaldo
• Bode Miller

Is Michael Phelps the runaway winner here? I was pretty captivated by Usain Bolt during the Olympics, too. And, man, what a year K-Rod had. Who would you cast your vote for?

STAT OF THE DAY

21 — Seasons Jerry Sloan has been the head coach of the Utah Jazz. The other 29 NBA franchises have made 222 coaching changes since Sloan became coach. Sloan is the longest-tenured coach with one team in the four major sports, according to the Associated Press. Leaders in the other sports include Bobby Cox of the Atlanta Braves who has completed 19 seasons, Jeff Fisher of the Tennessee Titans who is in his 15th and Lindy Ruff of the Buffalo Sabres who is in his 12th.

Amazing feat … living 21 years in Utah, that is. (I jest. I jest.)

The Rams need to take either an OT or a defensive player in the first round.

I think OT Andre Smith from Alabama would be a great draft pick for the Rams.

Andre Smith was pretty unsensational vs. Florida. It looked like he was clumsy when run blocking. He was getting tossed around pretty well by Brandon Spikes who is smaller.

Let’s see what Oher looks like against Texas Tech. There are some mid-late round OLmen that look pretty appealing also including Phil Loadholt from Oklahoma(6′8″ 350).

You need to get out more if tonight was the 1st night you were going to get a chance to see the 1st Rounders play as a Note. As for the injury, if you research another NHL player nick-named “(sid)the Kid” he had the exact same injury as Osh. Came out for 2 games where he popped the cartiledge (which is normal, and hurts worse then when you orginally sprain it) and came back to the team just fine.. I blame whatever curse is buried under this “Saavis/Scottrade Center”

No, I said it was going to be my first chance to see the three of them together “live”, as in person. Of course I’ve seen them play together. But with Oshie already missing a number of games and Berglund missing some, too, I’ve not gotten to “eyewitness” the three youngsters on the ice at the same time this season at any games I’ve been at … and certainly not on the same line. Was hoping to see the threesome tonight.

I think a middle linebacker like the kid from USC makes sense in the first round. We will not get a shot at the best Offensive lineman based on our draft position. Look for line help in free agency and the second round.

We need new skill players. qb, wr, etc. how about a 1st round qb 2nd round rb and a 3rd round lineman,,,, we need a viable #2 Qb to learn the system. ween need a tall strong fast qb. Graham Harrell maybe?

I like the name “Baby Blues” for the Perron-Berglund-Oshie line. I really hate the “Lunchbox Line” suggestion that Rutherford mentioned. Lunchbox sounds too blue-collar for people paid millions of dollars to play a game.

I think they need to get a guy like Michael Oher, OT, from Ole Miss in the first round, Chase Daniel QB in the second round, and someone like Kevin Barnes a CB from Maryland in the 3rd. Chase is so under the raidar that he could be a steal if he goes to the 2nd or 3rd round.

Is there a way we could draft the Oklahoma line as a group? I know they’re not pros, but they were pretty impressive in Saturday’s game and the reason Oklahoma scored all those points.

And by the way, being a former offensive lineman, there’s a lot of skill that goes in to what those guys have to do. Same on the defensive line. No, they’re not sexy, but they’re the engine that drives their units.

*Sigh*
Chase Daniel in the second round, eh Josh? That would be about five rounds too early for anyone to take him. He may not even get drafted, according to people who know what they’re talking about. He’s short, has a popgun arm, and played one system for his whole life and makes bad decisions when pressured. Second round … that makes me laugh even more every time I see it. Thanks for brightening my day.

And Tim Tebow? Scouts aren’t even convinced he’ll be a quarterback in the NFL, and instead may put him at a position like safety.

gotta be an o-lineman. doesn’t matter who the qb is if he’s on his back after 1 second. next, we need a linebacker. i’d love a tough guy, not sure who, but somebody who’s a harda-s, who will fire up the d and get after it.

also, barron is not a stud, but he’s ok. hard to have a full line of pro bowlers. he gets WAY too many offsides, but he’s never hurt and is probably, for better or worse, the only consistent lineman we have. finally, he was late for a meeting on friday and got benched to start, but that’s the very first time i’ve heard of him being any sort of trouble. he doesn’t get dui’s, shoot himself, or beat women…and, as sad as it is to say, that has to count for something in the nfl.

I can’t believe that a bunch of sports writers actually got it right! We do need Oklahoma’s O line as they already know how to hold at a Pro level. If our guys knew how to hold like that and the NFL hired all of those blind big 12 officials we’d be in the superbowl and Steven Jackson would be on his way to the hall of fame

We definately need a OL (probably a couple)then we need a solid corners so that we can put more pressure on opposing QB’s without getting burned in the secondary.. Pay OJ Atogwe…he is the only thing that is looking right on the defense on a consistent basis…The guy gotta nose for the football…We tackle some of these suggestions in the off-season then the NFC West is OURS next year!!!! GO RAMS now & forever!!!

By all means, take a new Quarterback (NOT Chase Daniel)and two O-linemen in the first three rounds. The Rams aren’t going anywhere with Bulger, and the new QB will need some protection while he’s getting experience. Aside from the kickers, this team needs help everywhere, but I think these three picks will be critical.

Do you people watch the same team that I have for the last 4-5 years? If the Rams don’t find a way to get Taylor Mays the most feared and talented safety in college football 6′3 230lb.s plus and 4.24 40 yard times [twice]then the rest of the NFL will continue to run the ball down our throats. We need the mean and talented big man to make teams think twice about going over the middle and help all of the D linemen we have been drafting to have a chance to get to the opposing QB not to mention cutting down the area our corners will have to cover.Give me the all world safety from USC.

Kyle, What round did Tom Brady go in smart one? Round 6 pick number 33. Tony Romo wasn’t even drafted. Is drew brees the tallest QB? His arm strength can be easily be improved. He is very accurate 74.0 pass pct. And when you talk about pressure, Who destroyed arkansas last year in the cotten bowl 38-7? Put all of that in your pipe and smoke it. Maybe if he got a little bit of defense they would have a better record this year. And why dont you look at his high school record 31-1 as a QB. He won a 5A Division II state title in 2004 and runner up in 2003.
