Kurt Warner to suffer SI curse?

THINGS TO PONDER

CURSES FOR KURT: Sorry, Arizona Cardinal fans, but Sports Illustrated has planted Kurt Warner on the cover of this week’s magazine. You know what that means, right? The dreaded SI curse. I couldn’t find a picture of the cover on the Sports Illustrated Web site, but you can see it here at the Arizona Republic.

Speaking of Sports Illustrated, you should check out their article on “Why Warner is better QB than Manning.”

NEVER TOO MUCH MO: As Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak chats live with readers at STLtoday.com, taking on their questions about this offseason and this year’s team, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com has just posted a story that takes a look at Mo and Cardinal Nation, in general. Here’s how Crasnick’s story kicks off: “Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak makes for an easy target. He’s a bookish-looking guy with an understated demeanor, a self-deprecating sense of humor and a name that’s difficult to pronounce (Mo-ZAY-lock). He succeeded Walt Jocketty, one of the most accomplished executives in the game, and works alongside a manager, Tony La Russa, who wields considerable clout and isn’t afraid to express his opinions.”

MIDDAY NEWS AND THOUGHTS

MEET THE RAMS NEW O-MAN: Pat Shurmer, who has been the Eagles quarterbacks coach for the past seven seasons, is not a name that was on my radar as the Rams next offensive coordinator. But a look at the Eagles media guide points out a few interesting tidbits on Shurmer:

He has helped Donovan McNabb earn three of his five Pro Bowl berths, including in 2004 when McNabb turned in his most productive season. (And it’s no secret that Rams QB Marc Bulger could use a little tutoring right now.)

In 2002 Shurmer earned praise around the league when McNabb and backup QB Koy Detmer both went down with injuries. In came third-stringer A.J. Feeley and the Eagles went 4-1 down the stretch. (We don’t even know who the Rams backup QB will be this coming season.)

Little-known fact: Shurmer’s uncle, the late Fritz Shurmur, served as the Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator from 1994-98, when the team earned two NFC championships and a Super Bowl title. (So perhaps Pat Shurmer can even help out the Rams defense, too.)

AND NOW MEET THE RAMS NEW D-MAN: Gotta admit, didn’t know much about Panthers LB coach Ken Flajole either, before Jim Thomas reported this morning that he will be the Rams new defensive coordinator. A few facts on Flajole:

As defensive backs coach with Seattle in 1999, Flajole’s secondary led the NFL with 30 interceptions. (O.J. Atogwe has to be licking his chops somewhere today.)

In his first year as LB coach with Carolina in 2003, his linebackers became a focal point for the team. Dan Morgan set a club record with 25 tackles in Super Bowl XXXVIII and Will Witherspoon had a career-high 114 regular-season tackles that season. (Perhaps now we’ll see Witherspoon move back to his natural position at outside linebacker for the Rams.)

Little-known fact: Flajole has a Missouri connection already; he was an assistant coach at Mizzou from 1989-93.

STAT OF THE DAY

351 — All-time record of career home runs hit by a second baseman, recorded by Jeff Kent, who announced his retirement today. That’s 74 more than second place Ryne Sandberg. In all, Kent hit 377 career homers (351 while playing 2B.)

SORRY FOLKS: We had a lot of issues on our blogs today. For that reason, I’ve pulled the main Round Two Watercooler topic that was slated for today to save for discussion tomorrow. Please tune back in tomorrow to get our writers’ take on Ryan Ludwick’s chances of reproducing last season’s success.

Nah… Kurt has already been on the cover of SI twice in the past month, and he responded by knocking off the Falcons, Panthers, and Eagles.

But the Rams are most definitely suffering from “The Curse of Kurt”.

They haven’t done squat since he left.

Mabye getting a little abuse from pi$$ed off fans will make Mo relize he’s not doing a single thing to help this team. Everyone knows hes trying to delay things as much as possible for all the GOOD FA to get signed so he can come up with an excuse on how the market didnt work as they planned and we end up with Kris Benson. Jocketty is gone right now because he gave a $hit, tried to help the team as much as possible and ended up taking money ouy of Dewitts pocket. Puppet boy can talk suffisticated and smart all he wants but hes not fooling anyone. This crap Fo is pulling is getting old and things ar starting to get very ugly in Cardinal nation.

That’s some hack “journalism” if I’ve ever seen it. 60 seconds of research by this crack columnist would have revealed multiple SI covers this week. So if the Cardinals are “cursed” as well as the Steelers, does this turn out to be some neverending Donovan McNabb-type game?
Seriously, I learned day one of J-School, to do research.

Wow, an “actual journalist” is in the house. Of course I knew SI put out a regional report this week. Steelers to the east, Cardinals to the west. But our readership here in St. Louis cares about Kurt Warner’s performance, not Troy Polamalu’s. That’s why I focused on the Warner cover. Did my entry say “Cardinals are cursed” or “Steelers are cursed”? No, it said “Curses for Kurt.” Warner is the storyline here. And I thought people in St. Louis (who likely, like me, didn’t get Warner on their SI cover) would like to know he was on it.

And I didn’t even need 60 seconds of research since my SI was sitting on my counter when I left home this morning with a picture of Polamalu on it. But I am glad to hear you got through Day 1 of J-school. Congratulations on that.

this is a pretty funny posting these guys have going here. i’m cracking up. what’s really funny is how ‘an actual journalist’ got so far under hensley’s skin, he replied like a kid getting picked on in the lunchroom.
personally, does anybody really care about curses anymore? there’s the si curse, the madden curse, the masters par 3 curse…who cares. is it even worth bringing up? don’t think so. i kind ofagree with the guy who made the first post.
but should we see warner get ko’d for his career and polamalu get his neck broken while getting tackled by all that ridiculous hair after an INT, in the same game, then we can perhaps have the discussion.

Bravo and touche, Haha! Great points on the topic itself. And, a little too defensive on my part. Remember, I’m an editor, not a columnist — so I’m not used to the personal digs. My blog is just meant to provide some updates on the daily news and hopefully to find a few things to entertain our readers. I haven’t gotten quite accustomed yet to the venom that can be aimed at anything online. But I’m gonna work at it.

Why did I get the Polamalu SI?

Or, perhaps, it’s a good omen.

Go Kurt and Michael Bidwill.

“Speaking of Sports Illustrated, you should check out their article on ‘Why Warner is better QB than Manning.’”

Interesting read, and there are the “facts”, but I can’t diss Peyton so lightly. His team plays in the AFC, and this year’s AFC championship game, as well as the Ravens/Titans matchup, sheds a lot of light on how brutal that conference’s defenses can be to offenses.

Warner was on SI before the 1999 superbowl and seemed to do OK in from what I remember. How about this little known fact that Fritz Shurmer coached for the Rams, And jack Youngblood still blames his 3-4 two gap system in 1983 for the destruction of his body. How about how Fritz walked out of the Rams locker room never to return after a blowup with John Robinson.

Bernie did you not know that Fritz Shurmur was also the Rams DC before he went to the Packers? I think that is worth mentioning, too.

The late Fritz Shurmur was the Rams defensive Coordinator from 1983-1990, under John Robinson.During his tenure, the Rams ran the 3-4 defense. In John Robinson last season(1991), he hired Jeff Fisher to be DC, installing the 4-3, after Shurmur left to Green Bay.
