How would Holt leaving affect Rams’ draft?

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: With Drew Bennett already cut and now Torry Holt asking for his release, how early do you see the St. Louis Rams targeting a wide receiver in this year’s draft? Are there still quality options after Michael Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin are gone, or will the Rams have to consider striking early for a quality WR?

JIM THOMAS
Let’s see what the rest of free agency brings, but there aren’t really many options left, at least younger ones. As for the draft, the problem with taking a wide receiver at No. 2 overall is that you still need an offensive tackle. If the Rams opt for a receiver at the top of the second round, Kenny Britt of Rutgers and Brian Robiskie of Ohio State are possibilities.

BERNIE MIKLASZ
Barring a trade or free-agent signing, the Rams will have to make WR a priority in the draft. If they don’t go for Jeremy Maclin or Michael Crabtree in the first round — hopefully after trading down — they’ll have to take a hard look at WR in Round 2. But they can’t pass on a better player at another position. They can’t force it. Finding a taller more physical receiver might have to wait for next year’s wish list.

JEFF GORDON
Crabtree is an option, of course, but LB Aaron Curry looks like a great pick for the defensive side — and you have to believe Spags will push for him. The Rams are going to run a ground-control offense. This will be a run-first team. Donnie Avery and Keenan Burton both have nice upsides. The free-agent wide receiver pool isn’t great, but the Rams ought to at least add depth with a veteran and then pick somebody later in the draft for more depth.

KATHLEEN NELSON
I think the Rams first might try to get one of the geezer wideouts to provide a little stability. Drafting a first-rounder and throwing him immediately into the fire would be unfair to the draftee. Remember when the Rams drafted Torry Holt? Isaac Bruce was the man, and Holt had a role model from whom to learn. I wonder how Torry would have fared as the undisputed No. 1. I’d bet not as well as he did; Bruce took the pressure off Holt

MIDDAY NEWS AND THOUGHTS

HOLT AMONG GAME’S ELITE? I heard a ridiculous discussion on the radio last night about whether or not Torry Holt was one of the game’s “great” receivers during his time in the league. Are you kidding me? As Jim Thomas pointed out in his story today, Holt, the No. 6 overall pick in the 1999 draft, has caught more passes (817) for more yards (11,872) than any receiver in the NFL this decade. Need more perspective … Thomas provided it. Over Holt’s 10-year career, his average of 80.1 yards per game is the highest for any WR in league history. At the age of 32, Holt is 11th overall in career receptions (869) and 14th in career receiving yards (12,660). It’s guaranteed he’ll continue to build on those career numbers and move on up the list.

Anyone who looks at those numbers and doesn’t believe Torry Holt has been one of the league’s elite receivers over the last decade should just stop watching football. Right now. Turn it off. Watch rugby.

Now, with that said, it’s hard to say if the Rams would be making a mistake to cut Holt now. He is coming off his worst season ever. But generally speaking, WRs don’t necessarily deteriorate at the age-30 plateau as quickly as, say, RBs. Many WRs continue to put up decent numbers into their mid-30s. And how many of Holt’s reduced numbers in 2008 were a product of him losing a step, and how many of them were the product of a completely dysfunctional offense where the QB spent more time on his back than on his feet?

There are no easy answers here, and I believe Holt has played his last game as a Ram. But rather than celebrating his departure, I think Rams fans should celebrate all he gave this team for 10 years. Other than grumbling a bit at the end of last season as he was worked out of the offense, Holt was always a classy guy. There is no arguing the production he put up while here.

IT ALL STARTED WITH MADONNA: Long before the steroid revelations and the tearful apologies, I told you the A-Rod kingdom would fall sooner than expected … and it was because of the bad mojo he brought on himself for dating Madonna. Now, just days after saying A-Rod had a cyst on his hip that needed to be checked out, ESPN is reporting that Rodriguez needs surgery and will be out up to 10 weeks. This is the same cyst that earlier this week Yankees manager Joe Girardi said A-Rod had played with all last season. Of course, ESPN doesn’t have the news nailed down yet, and they are sourcing the story completely on something A-Rod’s brother said. So we’ll have to wait and see what’s really going on here.

I’m just thinking out loud here, but if I had a relationship with Madonna and I had a “cyst” on my hip, I’d be asking doctors to do all kinds of tests on that thing to find out exactly what it is. I’m just sayin’.

SOMETHING TO PONDER

CAN YOU IMAGINE? So we’re sitting here in the office this morning discussing Terrell Owen’s divorce from the Dallas Cowboys. Trouble has followed T.O. everywhere he’s been, like Schleprock in the Flintstones who always walked around with the dark cloud over his head. That said, his prolific numbers keep teams coming back for more. Which team, we wondered, would take a chance on T.O. My first thought was crazy Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders … but with a young coach and young QB, that might be too much for even the Raiders. And then this was mentioned: How about the Patriots? Holy cow, can you imagine the knocking knees of DBs if you were facing a Patriots offense with T.O. lined up on one side of the field and Randy Moss on the other … and with Tom Brady throwing them the ball. Unstoppable … on the field, at least. But chances are they’d never get that far as T.O. and Moss would likely implode the Patriots before mini-camps were even completed. Still, it’s an interesting thought and Patriots coach Bill Belichick has a record of making guys buy into team first … who knows.

Regardless, according to the Dallas Morning News this morning, Terrell Owens had to go. Some interesting thoughts considering how vital he was thought to be to the Cowboys and QB Tony Romo just a short while ago.

Just curious, if Torry Holt were to be released, would any Rams fans like to see T.O. end up in St. Louis?

As for the T.O. to STL. talk I have 4 words, HELL TO THE NO!

Torry Holt is not an elite reciever anymore. He has lost his deep speed and he usually doesn’t get any yards after the catch… of course, it has been like that for most of his career. The Rams should pick Aaron Curry.

Let Holt go…keep Pace…draft Maclin…he will provide deep threat…kick and punt return yardage….being a hometown ‘hero’…he will sell tickets

Has anyone put together the cyst on A-Rod’s hip, and his steroid use? Could it be a result of giving himself injections into his hip area? Hmmmm….food for thought.

I live in Dallas. T.O. was a cancer to the Cowboys, just like he was to SF and Phillie. He just can’t get enough attention. Rams are wise to stay away from him.

Actually Bernie, Torry Holt is second to Anquan Boldin in career yards per game, 80.1 for Holt to 81.2 for Boldin. Granted, of course, that Boldin has only half the seasons that Holt does. Holt is a sure-fire, first ballot Hall-of-Famer

Two players the Rams need to look at later in the draft:

1. Mike Wallace, Ole Miss, 6-0 180, 4.28, 40″ vert, 5th round.

2. Dominique Edison, Steph. F. Austin, 6-2 204, 4.42, 37″, 6th round.

Wallace really came on his senior year with Texas trasfer QB Jevon Snead. Followed that up with a good Senior Bowl, and very good combine.

Edison has the speed and size your looking for, with really good hands. Might just be this years’ Julius Colston.

I’d say T.O. to st. louis is about 99.9% unlikely (I don’t want him here.) For a few reasons:

1) He doesn’t fit Spagnuolo and Devaney’s “team first” attitude.
2) Cap reasons. Why spend all the money he’d command in ONE position instead of improving our team in other areas of need? Foolish.
3) He’s a cancer and affects those around him.
4) He’s bad @ life.

As tempting as it always is to draft a game-changing skill position in the first round, this 2-14 Rams team should focus this year on drafting “steak” and add the “sizzle” in future drafts. Build an infrastructure for success in the lines and defense.

Holt needs to go unless he would accept a restructured contract as a #3 receiver. Hopefully the Rams can trade him for a #3 or #4 pick. Keep Pace. Don’t draft Maclin. He won’t last very long as a NFL returner and wide receiver-he is not worth a top ten pick. Draft for defense. A solid defense is the best way to rebuild the Rams. Everything I read, LB Curry will be a very very good LB for years to come. I suspect our defensive line will get better & better. Looks like our secondary will be better, especially if we can get that Killer Bee out of NY Giants.

Use early rounds to draft defense, later rounds for offense. In no way should T.O ever be a Ram.

I live in the Dallas area and I’m sorry to see T.O. go. T.O. is an awesome athlete and the locker room issues he caused were completely overblown by the local media and ESPN. St. Louis should definitely look to pick him up. He may turn a Rand Moss for the Rams. Especially if the local media there gives him a chance. And, I bet St. Louis could pick him up on the cheap, not too many teams will be willing to give him another shot. Same goes for Mike Vick.

not trying to be a homer, but I would rather the Rams take Maclin before Crabtree…he would fill holes on special teams and in the passing game…and we all know how a special team touchdowns can change a game and deflate opposing teams…

Draft Maclin, a talent like his doesn’t knock on your door that often. I am sure Bulger could throw a 3 yd slant to him and Maclin would break downfield for an additional 20, 30, or a td!
If we are going to be a running team, then wouldn’t we need a fullback and a tailback that can play all season? I do not think just saying we are going to be a running team makes us one. Then the opposition would stack the line and wew would need to pass.

Take the speed of Maclin. We had speed during the great days of the SuperBowl.

Besides, drafting one lineman won’t change the team. Maclin could return kickoffs, punts, be thrown to deep or on a bubble screen.

Keep Pace & Holt, and draft Maclin.

Here is some food for thought… Torry only caught only 64 passes this past season… That was the first time he caught less than 90 since 2001! He also has only missed 2 yes that’s right 2 GAMES his entire career!! Holt also had no protection going against a defensive secondary this year.. Anyone that says Avery should be our #1 guy is crazy!! He has not proven his abilities but for 1 year!! Do you think Avery commands as much respect from a defense as Holt? Also why do you think Holt caught only 64 passes this season… Maybe because Bulger was on his back? We all know the O-Line needs improvement and thanks to Spags and the new front office they are addressing that! You can blame the previous coach and front office for Torry’s below normal season! Here is a little bit of info not too many people may know… Holt caught 1 pass in both games the Rams got KILLED 38-3 and 41-3!!!???!!! What’s wrong with that picture? Also Torry still averaged 12.4 yards per game!!! Avery averaged 12.7 but caught for 60 yds or more in only 4 games… That’s about half of Holt’s 7!!!! So why are we quick to dump a 32 year old WR that has probably 4 good years of football ahead of him???!!! Why do we think he is so easily replaced by Maclin or Crabtree?? Have they proven anything in this league??? I want HOLT to stay just like BRUCE and CURTIS!!! I’m sure it won’t happen but there is no way we should let this guy go so easily!!! Spags and the front office need to meet with him… LET HIM KNOW THAT HE IS IN THEIR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE!!! I bet Torry would not have that big of a problem signing a new contract that would free up more cap room!!! LET’S GET IT DONE!!!

P.S. DO NOT SIMPLY RELEASE HIM!!!! HE IS WAY TOO VALUABLE AND EVERYONE HERE WILL SEE THAT THIS YEAR!!!!

The Rams would be lucky to have T.O. He’s an elite reciever, that produces T.D.’s and demands attention on the field, and off the field he’s a class act. T.O. is active in his community and funds several charities, plus the only time you here about him in the news its football related.

— Hstyle
4:58 pm March 5th, 2009

Depending upon what we could sign him for. Normally , I wouldn’t trade a class act like Torry for a wing-nut like T.O. , but for this coming year … we need an experienced receiver while allowing the kids to mature , Owens and McMichael would provide Mark with big over-the-middle targets while the burners go deep ,should be a d.b.’s nightmare.First yr. with a new team , T.O. is on his best behavior. Second year?? We’ll worry about that when the time comes.I think SPAGS could get it across to T.O. that there are only so many bridges one can burn , and T.O has to stop being an ” arsonist”.Allows us to keep our focus for the draft on the DEFENSE. YES , I WOULD DEFINITELY GRAB T.O. IF FINANCIALLY FEASIBLE .

Keep Holt. He’s a known commodity. Pay the 1.25 mil roster bonus and then let the chips fall where they may. Torry Holt can still make his cuts and has great hands.

-Rookie-

I would much rather have a 32 year old Holt versus a 36 year old Harrison for many of the reasons I have previously stated. Harrison played only FIVE games in 2007. Plus Holt had about the same amount of catches this year as Harrison but with about a hundred more yards leaving Harrison’s receiving average at approx 10.4 versus Holt’s 12.4! Plus Marvin played on a much better team than did Holt last year as I’m sure everyone on here would agree…. So Rookie, what does my name say????!!!

we have to go for t.o. cant no one replace tori right now….we are in trouble if we dont have that go to receiver…i know that t.o. is a headache, but winning is the most important thing right now….

Its always hard to let one of your best players go. I would just wave him. I would trade him for a 2 or a 3 and a 5. And sign K.Barns of JAX to replace Pace. Then trade down with Philly for the 2-1rds and a 2 or a 3. And move Pace for the same as Holt, but move Pace to Oak for a 2/4 and Bush to back up Jackson.

“Anyone who looks at those numbers and doesn’t believe Torry Holt has been one of the league’s elite receivers over the last decade should just stop watching football. Right now. Turn it off. Watch rugby.”

What does the “Watch rugby” part even mean? Why should someone who is clearly incompetent in matters of football watch rugby? Is it somehow easier to understand or simpler?

It would be nice if people took the time to know what they are talking about before they write things like that.
