Rams draft: Tackle, LB or WR?

  • Email this
  • Print this

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: Most have assumed the Rams would grab either an offensive tackle like Eugene Monroe or linebacker Aaron Curry with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft. However, with last week’s release of Orlando Pace and Torry Holt, the team is down to just three young WRs and face a draft class with a lot of talent at the top of the WR pool? Which direction do you believe this team needs to go in the draft: Offensive tackle, linebacker or wide receiver?

JIM THOMAS
Tackle. Tackle. Tackle. Alex Barron is the only player currently on the roster with substantial experience at the position. And his contract expires after this season. Assuming that he can make a seamless transition to left tackle and Jacob Bell can step right in at right tackle without a hitch goes a couple of steps beyond optimism.

BERNIE MIKLASZ
Good question. I am planning to write a column on this subject. More than anything the Rams can’t afford to be prisoners of need. They have a new GM and coaching staff in place. This is the beginning of an era. This is the start of something new, and hopefully it will be built to last. The Rams have to draft with the next 10 years in mind. They can’t worry about immediate needs. They have to go with the player who will best help them win over the long haul. So I don’t care who they draft in terms of position. They have to rely on their scouting and trust the grades they give each prospect. If the top grade conclusively belongs to Aaron Curry, then draft the LB. The same principle applies to OT, WR or even QB. Trust your scouting. Go with the best player and you won’t go wrong.

BRYAN BURWELL
If only we could see what the Rams draft board looked like, it would make this an easier task. But I think you build your team from the offensive line because the ability to run and protect the quarterback is the most important key to having a functional offense. Go with a tackle in the first round, and I’d be tempted to get a block-out-the-sun guard like Duke Robinson in the second round if he’s the best player available, too.

BILL COATS
If the Lions don’t take Curry with the No. 1 pick, he’d be my choice. Otherwise, I’d target the offensive line. It’s so important, and the Rams really need to beef things up there. I don’t want to say wide receivers are a dime a dozen, but the Rams will be able to fill out that position without much difficulty.

JEFF GORDON
It appears that Curry is a cornerstone defensive player. Since Steve Spagnuolo wants to rebuild the Rams around its ground game and defense, Curry would be a great get. Crabtree is an attractive option, too, since he appears head and shoulders above the other WR prospects. There are lots of good tackles in this draft, but its debatable whether any merit a No. 2 overall pick and the huge money that comes with it.

KEVIN WHEELER (Host of “Sports Open Line” on KMOX)
I like the “best player available” theory. If the Lions take anyone not named Aaron Curry, the Wake Forest linebacker would be my selection. I’ve heard far too many NFL scouting types refer to Curry as the “cleanest” player on the board to think about passing him by, plus linebacker is an area of significant need.

Also of note, the offensive line and wide receiver positions are deeper in this year’s draft. There are several receivers that could be available at the top of the second round who are attractive to teams looking for bigger receivers. I’m a particular fan of Brian Robiskie of Ohio State — he’s got size (6’3”), good hands and great football sense.

Offensive tackles Eugene Monroe and Jason Smith are excellent prospects but they’re not “the next big thing” at their position. Taking one of them at No. 2 would be fine with me as they seem to be solid players and people but neither is at the level Orlando Pace was coming out of college. Heck, a couple of months ago Andre Smith was viewed by many as the top tackle in this year’s draft class.

Ideally the team would add a little more free agent depth so they could follow the “best player available” strategy.

MIDDAY NEWS AND NOTES

CUTLER DESERVED BETTER: Sure, QB Jay Cutler may be a little over-sensitive right now about his situation in Denver, but coming off a Pro Bowl year, who can blame the guy for being upset after finding out his new head coach was trying to make backroom deals to ship him off for another (and in my opinion, inferior) quarterback in Matt Cassell? Perhaps this is what happens when you hire a 32-year-old wunderkind offensive coordinator to be your head coach, as it appears Josh McDaniels poked a stick in a beehive he has no hope of containing at this point. Cutler has now requested a trade and the Broncos may be left to move on with Chris Simms at QB, an underachieving sort who hasn’t thrown an NFL pass in two years. If I were a Bronco fan, I’d be spitting mad at McDaniels and team owner Pat Bowlen, who sat back and allowed this all to happen.

While some Denver columnists are pointing out there is plenty of blame to go around in this mess, the Denver Post’s Mark Kiszla says “good riddance” to Cutler today. I think he’s delusional, but that’s essentially his stance. He offers up three QBs he somehow thinks the Broncos can get now that will outperform Cutler. Good luck with that. You can check out Kiszla’s column here.

SOMETHING TO PONDER

BLUES FACE BIG WEEK: Heading to western Canada for a three-game road trip is never an easy task, but it’s one the Blues must face head-on this week. So far in recent weeks, this young Blues team has been up to the challenges it’s faced. Last week’s homestand featuring games against Dallas, San Jose, Detroit and Minnesota was vital before this team hit the road. The Blues came away with six of a possible eight points … very respectable. Canada can be a tough place to play for road teams given the raucous Canuck crowds, and the 9 p.m. starts can be tough on a team that is normally finishing up games by about 10 p.m. here in St. Louis. But the Blues must once again find a way to get two out of these three games — and it must start tonight in Edmonton. You just don’t want to start this road trip with a loss.

Coach Andy Murray has done a commendable job keeping the club focused solely on the game in front of them. If the team is able to do that tonight, and get out to a quick start, they should pocket the points this evening. And then it’s on to Vancouver …

Regardless, who among you would have believed near the end of December this team would be sitting just one point out of the playoffs on St. Patrick’s Day?

ON THIS DATE

March 17, 2005 — Mark McGwire goes before a Congressinal committee and repeatedly tells them, “I’m not here to talk about the past.” They are words that will live in infamy in baseball lore, and have permanently damaged McGwire’s reputation among most of the sporting public. In fact, that performance is the likely catalyst for keeping McGwire out of the Hall of Fame.

Hard to believe it’s been four years already since that testimony. Time flies.

Take Aaron Curry… the NFL has changed in recent years about you must have “that” left tackle to build around. Well I think you need “playmakers” on defense to give your offense a chance to be productive from any place on the field. Aaron Curry will be a “playmaker” in the NFL!!!

I think that the Rams have to go wide reciever all the way, with there previous bust of offensive lineman(Alex Barron) and defensive lineman in the first round, you need serious upgrades at wide reciever and you can always find good reliable(sleeper) picks for lineman in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th round. They is probably one good lineman and one good linebacker available and you have to say to yourself are they worth 50 million dollars b/c that is probably what they are going to get, are they Orlando Pace type calibur, 6 of 7 pro bowls, superbowl apperances. I dont think any of the players are worthy, i tell you who is a game changer worth 50 plus million is michael crabtree, i know that there are questions revolving his foot, but this kid is going to be a major star, and i just dont see how u pass on the best available wide reciever on the board at #2

Just like the columnists, I keep going back and forth on who the Rams should take in both the 1st and 2nd rounds.

If the Lions, who are desperately trying to interest Denver in a trade for Cutler, achieve this then I think they draft Curry and that leaves us with only one choice, an OT - either Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe. Both of these players though have their warts. Smith hasn’t played LT that long but supposedly has a lot of upside and is very athletic and has great footwork. He is not a roadgrader type right now but he seems to have great character and I do believe he would work hard and not just sign his big contract and then do nothing. Monroe seems to be more NFL ready at LT then Smith but doesn’t have nearly the upside according to scouts.

The question in drafting a LT in the 1st round is then what do you do with him? All of us expect a starter with a pick that high. Do we trade Barron? Do we move him back to RT and then what do we do with Bell. We have a lot invested in Bell but he seems to have trouble keeping his weight up but has good athleticism and footwork but is that enough? RT is supposed to be more of a mauler then a finesse guy. Do we put Bell back in at G? When is Greco’s time? He is a good and possibly great o-lineman who played LT in college so he has a good deal of athleticism. Schuening also provides us depth and he played LT in college as well. Both of these guys are learning new interior positions but need to play if they are good. They really fit Spags’ 4 pillars.

Crabtree’s injury and supposed lack of elite speed are factors but we are very weak at WR without Torry anymore. Like Kevin Wheeler from above, I also believe in Robiskie and think he could be had in the 2nd round.

I know we need defense, especially on the line, but other than Raji there doesn’t seem to be a lot there that really jumps out at you. If we don’t go WR in the 2nd we could go with a DT who would add to the rotation and put some of our other players in their more natural positions.

Sporting News has the 2nd best ILB in this draft falling to us in the 2nd round in their latest mock - Laurinitis. This would be a two-fer as that would allow WW to go back outside (his more natural position) and put a true middle LB back in the middle, something we haven’t had since Fletcher’s days in a Ram uniform. Laurinitis doesn’t have elite speed though like Curry according to his scouting report but he is big which is what the new regime is supposedly looking for throughout the roster.

All the answers just seem to lead to more questions as they usually do this time of year. Sorry for being so long winded.

Take Curry, he is the one player who would make the biggest difference on our team, he would allow us to move witherspoon back to his pro bowl position and he would strengthen our linebacking crew tremendously. its gotta be curry f hes available, there are alot of solid ot prospects in round 2, he would have the biggest impact and he is the bpa.

If the Rams have Aaron Curry rated as a better player than Smith and/ or Monroe then they should take him.

The Rams can’t afford to wait on certain players. The Rams need a OT, a MLB, a huge NT, a TB, a TE and a WR now. The Rams can certainly draft a MLB first rd and a WR in the second rd. But given Barron’s problem with false starts, I would be looking OT at near the top 3 rds. Here is the list of positions the Rams need to fill.

1)OT Loadholt
2)TB ?
3)MLB Curry /Mal (sp)
4) NT ?
5) TE/WR Crabtree / Coffmann
6)QB Daniels

The Rams need a TB to surplant Steven Jackson. Steven just doesn’t have enough speed to get outside. But then again, the Rams need a good OT, just in case Bell doesn’t work out. I would also draft a QB, but he isn’t a high priority , so the Rams can take their time getting him. I haven’t looked at all the possible candidates yet, but here is a starter list. The Rams can also get rid of somemore players that largely slacked off the last two or three seasons.

MCGwire was forced to testify. He had already retired from baseball. It is amazing on how Bonds was allowed to skate long enough to break Aaron’s record. But public opinion has judged, juried and executed McGwire on hearsay evidence. Since there are NO positive proof he did steroids illegally. Andro was sold over the counter at GNC and was NOT included in the steroid act of 1990. Andro was only banned in 2004 and that law is not retroactive. If you want to nit pick, taking a multivitamin is a performance enhancing drug, so is Viagra. Viagra opens up blood vessels to increase blood flow to important organs.

you take macklin or crabtree here macklin is being under rated here this guy is such a weapon your getting 3 players in one

No way they should take a wide receiver. Wides can be found in every round of the draft. Don’t follow up last years mistake (Donnie Avery) with another mistake. Take an OT or MLB (Curry, Maleuga). I prefer the MLB.

PS - I know that some of think that Donnie Avery was a great pick, but wait and see how he does this year when he gets double teamed and has to catch balls over the middle. Don’t believe the hype.

The Rams should go with Curry. Yes, they need offensive line help especially with the departure of Pace. However, Curry is too good to pass up. Very quietly, the Rams are putting some pieces together on defense with Carriker, Long, Bartell, Atogwe and Butler. You add Curry to this mix and they have a young “D” that could develop together and become a force in this league for years to come. In terms of the offensive line, I hear it’s a deep position in this draft so maybe Devaney can get some help in later rounds. And there is always free agency. I saw Curry conduct an interview recently … seems like a solid young man.

— Greg
3:53 pm March 17th, 2009

Busted, that’s exactly the problem. The Rams have too many needs to reasonably expect to fill them in one draft. They need to get the best player available at every stage - or trade down when it makes sense, since there are indeed so many places we have room - and put together some pieces that will serve us well for years to come.

If the Rams do not trade out of the second spot, Curry seems like the right pick if he is available. He’s a good bet to be a cornerstone defensive player.

— Dave
5:18 pm March 17th, 2009

Take Curry, and then get an offensive tackle with the second round pick. There are at least 7 quality offensive tackles in this draft and one of them should still be available near the top of the second round. Then look for your receiver with the second pick in the 3rd round.

— Clint Yates
5:34 pm March 17th, 2009

I have seen a ton of mock drafts and there is a different OT in the second overall pick slot in every other one. This proves that there are at least four really good LTs in this draft but not a shining star like Orlando Pace was. I say take Curry, Crabtree or even Evert Brown with that pick. As far as McGwire goes, at least he didn’t lie about his steroid use. Mac was a class act when he was here, giving to charity and being pretty humble about everything from his homeruns to his salary.

5:36 pm March 17th, 2009

I said this on another post but the Rams’ best option would be to trade Bulger and the second round pick to Denver for Cutler. Draft Aaron Curry to stabilize the back seven. The tackle to tackle lineup will be Alex Barron, Mark Setterstrom, Jason Brown, Richie Incognito and Jacob Bell. With Karney sledghammering holes together with this line Jackson will have another all pro year. Cutler throwing behind that line will have time to get the ball Avery, McMichael, Burton and you know Amani Toomer is coming. The defense with the additions of Curry and Butler will be stronger, younger, faster and more hard hitting. Throw in the two pro bowl specialist kickers and we have a recipe for success gentlemen!

6:17 pm March 17th, 2009

The absolute worse thing the Rams could do is take an offensive tackle with the 2nd overall pick in this draft. Jason Smith was never on anyone’s radar as a top pick (during the season, I had him going to the Rams in the 2nd round of a mock draft) until he got those great numbers in the combine. However, history shows that players who show up on the radar due to big combine numbers tend to be busts in the NFL. Jason Smith didn’t even play in a normal offensive line set his last year (QB option offense where the OL played standing up…) He also measured with some very short arms, and all the quickness in the world isn’t going to help a left tackle that doesn’t have the reach. That is kind of like a QB that has small hands. Also, putting Barron at his natural position (I think Barron would be better at left tackle than any of the top 5 left tackles in this year’s draft) should make the OL better. I just don’t think that Bell would be a good right tackle. Getting a player like Phil Loadholt or Herman Johnson in the 2nd round would be big. Having one of them at right tackle would surely help out the running game more than putting the “small” Jacob Bell there. Looking at the future drafts (I look to the future since I don’t think the Rams need to be worried about the playoffs next season), the Rams would be better served to wait until next season to take a left tackle (if needed after this season) since there are at least five left tackles that are much better than the ones this year. The wide receiver class doesn’t look all that great after this season until probably 2011 (Julio Jones), so I would go with Micheal Crabtree. Right now the Rams really only have Donnie Avery and Keenan Burton to put the fear into defensive coordinators. Even though the Rams are wanted to go to a running game, all the top run blocking OL in the world wouldn’t be able to get Steven those extra yards if the defense is putting 9 guys in the box. With Crabtree, the Rams could move him all over the field, and he would be a great compliment to Avery and Burton. If defense if what the Rams want to go with, then I think Curry or Orapko should be their picks. One of the big reasons why the Giant’s defense was so good under Spags was the fact that everyone on the front seven was interchangble. They had outside linebackers that could play in the middle or at defensive end; they had defensive ends that could get push up the middle at tackle, or could drop back into coverage as a linebacker, and they have tackles that could move over to end on running downs. both Curry and Orapko would work in this scheme.

We need to take curry in the first round because there will be good WR in the
Second round like percy harvin, darius heyward bay, and kenny britt

I could see Darrius Heywood-Bey going to Oakland in the first, Percy Harvin going to Tampa in the first and Kenny Britt going to Baltimore or the Giants in the first…I don’t think we can assume that a “top” WR will be available in the 2nd round.

HEY DAVE HOW DO YOU FIGURE THAT AVERY WAS A BUST HE WAS THAT BEST GUY WE HAD ON OFFENSE. ONE YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT IS THAT HE WILL BE DOUBLE TEAMED WHICH IS EVEN MORE REASON TO GET MACKLIN OR CRABTREE. I GET CURRY HAD A REAL GOOD COMBINE THATS FINE DURING HE SEASON WAS NOT ALL THAT GREAT. GUYS PUT WAY TO MUCH INTO THE COMBINE IT HELPS A LIL BIT BUT IT IS NOT WORTH IT TO DRAFT AN OT LB WITH WITH THE 2ND PICK TRADIND DOWN AT THIS POINT IS REALLY NOT AN OPTION JUST PICK MACKLIN OR CRABTREE WILL BE A MUCH BETTER AND SAFER PICK WE KNOW THESE GUYS WILL MAKE AN IMPACT RIGHT NOW. THERE ARE ALOT OF LB OT IN THIS DRAFT THAT WILL BE VERY GOOD NONE WORTH TAKING WITH THE 2ND PICK. THE RAMS NO THIS THEY HAVE A VERY GOOD FO AND THEY WILL GET THE HIGHEST AVAILIBLE PLAYER WHICH IS NOT CURRY

I keep reading this noise about the Rams needing a back-up for Jackson. Kenneth Darby played hard last year and I think could fill the back up role. He has a lot of upside and has gained tremendous confidence. He will surprise us all in camp.
RAMS should draft Curry, he’s the safest draft gamble to go with for an instant starter. Makes no sense to build a franchise with an offensive lineman.. Bulger needs to improve his footwork and scramble/slide. The days of a pure pocket passer are long gone, even Favre scrambles time to time.

Omg!!! are the rams seriouse?? they need a linebacker ALL THE WAY!! We need someone that can wrap up and not be scarred to hit; unlike everybody else on the team. Dont get me wrong, our offense isnt that good either, but we need someone not to be scarred to do ANYTHING!! i already thought letting tory holt was stupid, but we can always get another Querterback. in my opinion, i think we really need a new head, deffense, and offensive, coach!!

anybody that comes on here and says the rams should go wide receiver in the first round have not been watching the same rams ive been watching for the last two years. how are Maclin or Crabtree gonna get the ball with bulger being on his back half of the snaps that he takes?

. The consensus first round pick seems to be J. Smith. But I would not be sorry or surprised if they took Curry.
A number of good prospects may fall into the second round. Some draft boards have James Laurinaitis falling out of the first round. This may be wishful thinking. Certainly this will help solidify their suspect linebacker group. Despite the fact that many feel that Curry can play the middle I think the team will have to improve the O-line as their greatest need with second overall pick. The offensive is last or second last in about every offensive category.
Ron Brace the massive nose tackle who subs for Baji would give them that road grader at nose tackle that they need. The Rams don’t seem to think that the defensive line is a high priority.
Duke Robinson is the best guard in the draft and may fall. I don’t see the team using both initial picks on the o-line but picking him up here along with Smith would build a nucleolus that would give the team a solid o-line for many years. If they take Curry than he will be the BPA among the o-lineman. The Ram’s o-line has been one of the NFL’s worst performing units for years with absolutely no quality depth at any position. At 6-5 & 335lbs he would make his presence known. He is already better than Incognito.
Last, Rashad Jennings will be here at 2. I understand that the Rams have interviewed him and are they hoping he will be falling into the third round. He is rated as the 5th or 6th best running back in the draft. If Jackson goes down they just don’t have another back who can go the distance. His size well compliments Jackson’s and would be a solid number two back behind or along side of Jackson. If it’s the running game for 09 then they are defiantly going to need to draft another running back and draft him high in the draft. It’s a gamble to assume he will be on the board in the third round.
I just don’t see them going wide receiver or d-back considering all the holes in this lineup with their first two picks. For me it’s Laurinaitis if they go OT with the first although I think he goes in the first. Robinson in the 2nd round if they go with Curry. There will still be some massive tackles available in the third round.

Hey ramsfan fan I understand you but don’t you see it don’t matter who you put in front of bulger he does’nt get rid of the ball he olds the ball 5 to 7 seconds he dose not move he under or over throws the WR someone said avery looked lost last year bulger looked more lost to me than anybody else other tan linehan how ever you spell his name. one thing is for sure we wont be drafting 3 TE back to back or drafting a hiesman QB and turning him into WR those days are long gone. We have a new smart FO Macklin or Crabtree will be coming to the rams

KEVIN WHEELER!
What you said! YES!
Been pushing the CURRY-ROBISKIE FOUR PILLARS BANDWAGON for the last month!
Finally another voice speaks up!
Talent, character, professionalism!
Number 35 is NOT too high for Robiskie…most NFL READY, best route runner, great hands, size and willingness to block, red zone target, moves the chains, 4.47 speed, good YAC, 2nd most catches over 20yds in Big 10 last year. Reported on NFL last weekend he’s fast moving in to Round 1.
ANY team would feel lucky to have ONE of these players on their roster the next 9-10 years…we are in excellant position to GET BOTH!!!

The Rams NEED a tackle in this draft. There seems to be a lot of tackles in the draft this year that are all graded about the same. I would love to
see the Rams take Curry if he is the best defensive player in the draft and the Lions don’t take him. If Detroit takes Curry, then Crabtree would give the Rams a young, but very dangerous recieving group, Then OT would have to be addressed in the second round. The idea of Alex Barron at LT and Jacob Bell at RT does can not be giving Bulger a warm feeling as far as him staying upright and healthy this season.

12:27 pm March 18th, 2009

For substantial improvement next year, the only way their offensive line will improve is if they sign, not draft, tackles and guards. I don’t see anything but the best player available strategy as a viable way to improve in the draft. Someone tell me the name of one true “great” player on the rams. Gotta get that one true great player. I’m not sure who that is, but it’s definitely not one of the tackles available.

Wonder why fans don’t understand that the reason that this team has the # 2 pick in the draft, because the team is horrible and is in need of a impact player at any position except for kickers. So the objective of the draft should be pick the BEST PLAYER…. and not asume there’s a position that’s more important. Lets just pick the best damn player and forget a about the combine pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease

Great idea for the Rams to take a long look at Matt Jones, the wide receiver from AR just cut by Jacksonville. He has the tools to be a great slot guy, fantastic speed, big body. Of course his behavior credentials are going to be a biggie, but why not take a chance with an incentive laden contract and possibly steal legitimate talent for a small investment? Remember the 4.37 he posted at the combine? Speed still there as he was lightly used until early last year in Jax. Something to mull over.

The Blues of this year remind me of last year’s Blackhawks squad in that they are young, eager, and coming into their own. The Hawks barely missed the playoffs last year. We’ll see if this Blues squad has enough to make it into the second season this year.
