Rams draft: More offense or defense?

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: Offensive tackle or linebacker? Linebacker or offensive tackle? The debate rages on about the No. 2 overall pick. But the Rams have many, many needs to address in this draft: offensive and defensive line, wide receiver, linebacker, backup QB and RB, defensive back … the list goes on. Which side of the ball do you think the Rams will have invested in most heavily come the end of next weekend’s NFL draft?

JIM THOMAS
The Rams have so many needs, it really depends on who’s available at each pick that is a good value (highly rated) in each particular round. For example, say the Rams take an offensive tackle in the first round. What they do in the second round might depend on whether wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, defensive tackle Ziggy Hood, edge rusher Larry English or even Ohio State middle linebacker James Laurinaitis is available. But on balance, if the Rams are serious about a drafting a quarterback and a backup running back, there shold be a tilt towards offense.

BRYAN BURWELL
When you end up drafting in the No. 2 slot in the first round in back-to-back seasons that means you have huge holes all over your roster. But despite Steve Spagnuolo’s defensive background, I won’t be surprised if his GM Billy Devaney goes slightly towards filling in the most holes on offense. The Rams need starters on the offensive line, immediate help at WR, a useful RB to spell Steven Jackson, QB for the future … and did I already say how badly they need more big and talented offensive linemen?

JEFF GORDON
Over the course of the draft, the Rams may end up with a bigger offensive investment. They have to add at least one tackle. Receiver is a glaring need. They could use a better No. 2 running back and another quarterback. On defense, they need a middle linebacker, a beefy defensive tackle, depth at cornerback and perhaps a developmental pass-rushing end. But the Rams put the franchise tag on O.J. Atogwe, spent heavily to keep Ron Bartell and filled their safety void in free agency.

BILL COATS
It’ll be close, but I think the Rams’ draft will lean toward offense. They need significant help on the line, at wide receiver and running back, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they took a quarterback in the later rounds.

KATHLEEN NELSON
I think the correct answer is “line,” on both sides of the ball. But since that’s not a choice, I’ll go with offense. The Rams are more likely to use the first pick on an offensive lineman, and there are so many good wide receivers in the draft, one is likely to be the “best player available” by the time they pick in the second round.

Stags should have a sense of urgency to make meaningful improvement that shows on the field. I think the best course would be to focus heavily on Defense in the draft (other than a top 10 Offensive Lineman). WR, RB, QB players should be through Free agency, etc. Let’s Fix one area at a time thoroughly rather than piecemeal like we have in the past. Fans will get excited if we actually have a stout defense with a personality and attitude. That would at least give us an identity to build on. Next year we will go after QB’s, RB, Wr’s in the draft.

Curry is a prize that hard to resist but we can’t spend another season looking at Bulger get sack after sack like a ragdoll again..You have to protect your QB in order to score,period..Looking at other team taking Curry will be hard..but you just can’t have it all..

Build the Defense. The Ravens have been successful for a number of years with this type of plan. Our offense is already twice as good as theirs ever was.

has anybody in this organization ever made the obvious observation that DEFENSE wins championships NOT OFFENSE ,wake up idiots and do what your paid to do put a winner on the field.weve wasted enough years and enough draft picks on offense and what has it gotten us?

such a tough question. i realize ravens have/had a great d (so did/does tennessee) and that the offense is/was just ok, but keep in mind, they had/have ray lewis, ed reed, chris mcallister, etc. total studs…combine that with a protected qb, a stud rb, and a really, really, good o-line…remember, jamal lewis rushed for 2000 yards! more over, the wrs in bmore & tennessee, were just decent guys, not probowlers. i hope rammers take an OT with the #2 pick. that’s just too high a pick for a wr. if rams strengthen o-line, they can run, protect bulger, and teams have to worry/wonder whether jackson’s running or avery’s flying. that’s what works, a mix of smashmouth with downfield threats.

I think OL is the best place to start, then a good linebacker or DL whatever is the best talent of the two left when they pick. After that, wide reciever and another OL. With Boller, I think they have a very capable backup who could ever start if needed.

Ten to one our first pick won’t be an OT. Why? First of all the Offense will now be run oriented. Second, we now have a decent center AND a very capable blocking back. Barron is back to his natural spot, though the concensus is still out on that. But most importantly Devaney and Spags are smart enough to figure out that what this team REALLY needs is a heart transplant…an attitude adjustment. A BONEFIDE GAME CHANGER…an on the field Patton or Shwatzkopf, if you will, who will enspire the whole to a greater degree of mayhem, and mayhem is what football is all about, controlled as it is. Touchdowns are beautiful and it wins games, but an intimidating and crushing defense? Is there anything more inspirational than a defensive leader? An intimidating warrior that the opposing team has to change their whole game for?…..Remember Jr. Seau, Ray Lewis, Sean Merriman,Dick Butkus and mean Joe Green, to name a few? We’ll pick the OT in the second round have no fear, but the first pick is the attitude changer. The heart transplant….Maualuga or Curry. BOTH if we could ssshhhhwing it. Ahhh, but I dream.

It doesn’t matter what side of the ball the Rams draft. They’re AWFUL on both sides. They aren’t winning a Super Bowl any time soon. Take the best players in any of your need areas available at the time of your pick. Personally I’d take Crabtree, but even that said it doesn’t matter, take the best player. We need a player at every position. QB, RB, OL, WR, LB, DL, CB. Hey and by the way, I’m surprised I haven’t seen any mention anywhere of our wonderful special teams. We need bodies and lots of them….

Sanchez #2 pick first round by the St. Louis Rams…. make it happen. This is just the right kind of guy to lead the Rams back to the Super Bowl. He’s got that “uumph”!!!! Go Rams!!
