Can Mizzou football live up to recent success?

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: Missouri seemingly lost half of its starting players to the NFL a few weeks ago. With names like Chase Daniel, Jeremy Maclin, Chase Coffman, William Moore, Ziggy Hood and others moving on, what are the chances Mizzou can come even close to repeating its success of the past couple seasons? Has coach Gary Pinkel restocked enough for next year’s team to pick up where last year’s team left off?

VAHE GREGORIAN
Mizzou has established a baseline and has plenty of talent, even if a lot of it is unseasoned. But it’s hard to imagine you can replace the best quarterback in school history, two of the most intimidating offensive players in the nation in Maclin and Coffman and the most accurate kicker in NCAA history (Jeff Wolfert) and not sag. I think the defense actually will be improved, but I’d be amazed if the whole package is immediately as good as the last two seasons. That said, if you looked at the Big 12 schedule today, MU probably would be favored in five or six of its eight games. I actually think they can contend for the North crown but will be somewhere between 7-5 and 9-3.

JEFF GORDON
Getting to the high side of .500 and reaching a minor bowl game would be huge accomplishments, all considering. Is there life after Brad Smith and Chase Daniel? That is the multi-million dollar question. The Tigers will be able to run the ball and catch it, but what about the man at the controls? The sample from last season was much too small to judge.

MIKE SMITH
God bless the Tigers mentioned above, but honestly, didn’t that group basically check out last season after the home loss to Okie State and the stampede at Texas?

This season, Mizzou can diversify its offense with Blaine Gabbert at quarterback and undervalued backs Derrick Washington and De’Vion Moore running behind a decent line. There’s no doubting Gabbert’s physical tools, but these issues/questions remain:

1) He’s almost three years removed from spending an entire fall playing competitive football (Daniel’s understudy in 2008; injured most of 2007.)

2) Who will he throw to besides TE Andrew Jones? After Jared Perry and Danario Alexander — both injured this spring — the roster of wideouts is nondescript.

3) Can he lead his teammates? Blaine Gabbert was all about Blaine Gabbert when he played for Parkway West, but perhaps Pinkel has brow-beaten that attitude out of him by now.

Defensively, the Tigers automatically are better because they’re under new management (Eberflus out, Steckel in). Bottom line: a 4-0 nonconference season followed by a 5-3 Big 12 campaign and another minor bowl trip TBA (I mean, Big 12 favorite sons Nebraska and Kansas have to first decide which bowls they want to attend, THEN Mizzou can be accommodated).

TOM TIMMERMANN
There’s no way Mizzou can be as good next year as last year. They lost too much talent, and while the replacements may someday be as good or better, they won’t be next season. But that doesn’t mean Mizzou can’t win the Big 12 North. The league’s talent remains in the South, and Kansas is the competition to win the division and go back to the conference championship game. So by that standard, that Mizzou has a very good chance of being back in the Big 12 final, they will be picking up where they left off. But they’ll probably get thumped by every South Division team they play.

KATHLEEN NELSON
The Tigers have enough players who contributed last year to make another run at the Big 12 North. The offense will feature a veteran running back, Derrick Washington, a pair of wide receivers with big play experience, Danario Alexander and Jared Perry, and the bulk of the offensive line. The defense probably will rely on NT Jaron Baston and linebackers Sean Weatherspoon and Luke Lambert. Perhaps the relative inexperience of the squad is a plus. Last year’s defense and departed coordinator Matt Eberflus took heaps of criticism. A blank slate could do these guys good.

Given the inexperience on defense and the first year for QB Blaine Gabbert, fans shouldn’t expect much more than a fight for the division, though.

BILL COATS
The solid recruiting that Pinkel and his staff have accomplished in recent yearS is paying off. Mizzou lost a lot, but it returns a lot, too. The Tigers have enough to be in the hunt for another Big 12 North title.

I think its gonna be a whole new ball game with MIZZOU, they are gonna rely on their D for a change, and especially Spoon, he might even bring the first ever Butkus Award to MIZZOU. They will probably lose 4-5 games and get some cupcake bowl game.

Mizzou’s gonna get thumped by Baylor at home, Tom, really?

It will be just like last season, Mizzou will look out-classed by Texas, lose to OSU, thump Nubs, KSU, Ralphie, ISU, Baylor, Illinois, Nevada, and the other non-cons.

The big question is Kansas. Kansas is automatically the consensus favorite for some reason (I know they return everybody, but come on they were 7-5), but I don’t think much will separate the two teams.

Mizzou will finish either 9-3 or 10-2, and depending on the result of the KU game may or may not find themselves winning the North again.

I never heard of Mike Smith? I really like the positive attitudes. oh thats right reporters have to be negative and that way they are covered either way. If Mizzou loses they can say I told you so, if Mizzou wins then they can jump on the bandwagon.

Mike Smith what did Gabbert do to you? geez

Last years team wasn’t hungry. This one will be. And KU and Nebraska are decent teams at best, neither one is going to be beat the good south teams or scare any team with decent talent. I’d like to see KU stop anyone on defense and Nebraska score some points before I’ll change my mind.

i think the only way that mizzou makes a run for the Big 12 title is if they dont put their hopes and dreams on Blaine Gabbert. He is without a doubt a punk kid that cares onyl about his numbers, what he gets, almost like the QB version of T.O. so for all intents and purpose, its gonna be a rough year if he is that kid he was in high school. And no im not just saying that he’s a punk, my sister knew him in highschool and i wanted to smack him then too.

Defense will be much improved, primarily at D-end and LB. The key is the preformance of the O-line. D-Wash is recovered from a leg injury and Gabbert only needs to avoid mistakes for the Tigers to win 7/8. If he adds much, 9-3 or 10-2 is feasible. WRs will surprise–there is a lot of talent in last year’s frosh. Not bad for “re-loading.” MU has turned the corner.

Jayhawk–Oh Please, when has Mizzou ever looked up to KWHO in the standings under the Pinkle era.

Kenny- wow, that’s pretty solid logic.. your sister knew him in high-school, therefore he’s not a good quarterback in college.. you’re real bright obviously.
Hey if his numbers are huge, good for him, but that also means the team is doing well too, genius.

Mizzou will surprise again, thanks in part to being treated as a has-been.
PLEASE over-look us everybody, that just makes us HUNGRIER.

The Defense has to be better without a doubt! Did all of the losers who quit last year after the OSU debacle and “Horns” blowout leave for the NFL?
I hope so! Let’s at least give the new kids a chance, Chase Daniel put up good overall numbers, but he choked in big games the last two years, let’s face it and the defense never showed up for Big Games.
Maybe the new kids will play with a chip on their shoulders, I do see more overall raw talent, how it translates to play on the field only time will tell.

Hey Chickenhawk…your precious team played a big boy schedule last year…and struggled to get to 7-5. Don’t see much changing for you this year either. Welcome to reality!!

The glasses seem a little too rosy when you consider that the biggest losses Missouri will have to deal with weren’t even mentioned - BOTH of its coordinators. These aren’t trainers, they were responsible for large portions of the offensive and defensive game plans - and there is little evidence that Pinkel has been able to succeed without Christensen and Eberflus on their headsets.

The Tigers have an untested quarterback, revamped coaching staff and raw talent that all has to be corralled in time for their conference opener in Lincoln and, for those of you that stopped paying attention after last year’s thumping in Columbia, those Huskers found an identity last season - winning six of their last seven games and taking Texas Tech into overtime.

Even Kansas, with Reesing and Sharp among the league’s best at their positions, has comparatively more talent than Missouri right now and, coming off a loss to them last year and extolling confidence that hasn’t been earned is unwise.

Mizzou should get seven wins, but eight may be pushing it in a quickly improving North division.

better not disregard nebraska. they got a big time coach and the talent looks good. they will have the best defense in the north.

Nebraska will win the North and get revenge on Mizzou by smashing them this year. Blaine Gabbert, a.k.a. Blabbert, will start slow, but pick up towards the mid/end of the year.

Mizzou wins the north. Lets not forget that a lot of these guys will get better and better as the year goes on. KU wont be as good though its a rivalry so even if one team is 0 for the season and one team undefeated anything still can happen. The D will be much improved and probably one of the best especially with the change in Offense. The O will move the ball and keep the D refreshed. The D will lead this team to the North title.

Wayne, are you a year behind or projecting a year ahead? Mizzou beat Nebraska in Lincoln LAST year and then in Columbia the previous three times they came down. We are playing them HERE in Columbia this year on Thursday, October 8th.

That’s the game I’m looking forward to. Illannoy is definately a scare, but we should be able to take that one. The rest of the non-conference is a cake walk. That brings up NU who I think is our biggest threat to taking the division. They’re a good team, I hope we stomp ‘em, but they are a good team.

Sorry for the slip-up MIZZOUDAD, we hope to catch the game in Columbia this year - we had a great time two years ago getting cussed at and sitting in a half-empty section of the bleachers.

I’ll be sure to proofread closer next time - I must have been thinking about the 27 straight times Nebraska beat you guys before the little slip-up in 2003.

You guys all talk about Gabbert like you know him, i actually went to Elementary school with both he and his younger brother Tyler, and although i cant personally speak to their character of late (more than that both of them are friends of friends) both of them have been God’s Gift to athletics since they were in the 1st and 3rd grades, I’d imagine that has something to do with Blaines confidence and swagger and isnt that what you want in a QB who leads the team? Not to mention he was living with Chase and under Chase’s tutelidge for the last year, i think he’ll be just fine….

Also, according to PowerMizzou AND coach Pinkel the D-line is the best it’s ever been, and thats not counting Sheldon, and Pinkel is not the kinda guy to say that stuff if he doesnt fully believe it.
