Who’s your favorite all-time “St. Louis” Ram?

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: A new era is beginning for Rams football with new faces in many places around Rams Park — from the front office to the field. What better time to look back at the Rams time here in St. Louis. With that in mind, who has been your favorite player to watch in a Rams uniform since the team arrived here?

BERNIE MIKLASZ
Favorite Ram? That’s easy: Lawrence Phillips. Just kidding.

This is a tough one to answer. The best Rams player I’ve covered is Marshall Faulk. The best personal story I’ve covered is Kurt Warner. My favorite guy to deal with was probably D’Marco Farr, who had the tremendous underdog spirit that defined the 1999 Rams. But my favorite player was Isaac Bruce. He was great when the team was bad. He was great when the team was great. In the 1999 season, he made the big plays to beat San Francisco in that huge regular-season game at The Ed. He scored the first TD to help beat Minnesota in the first NFL playoff game in St. Louis. He caught the winning 73-yard TD pass for the go-ahead TD in the Rams’ Super Bowl victory. He had immense pride and set high standards and remained consistent in performance and personality whether the team was up or down. Just a great professional, who never wavered as a competitor, or in his personal beliefs.

BRYAN BURWELL
Marshall faulk in a runaway . . . the most breathlessly gifted athlete to wear a st. Louis rams jersey, he was also the smartest. At his best, faulk was one of those rare stars who would make a move or two every game that you know no normal man could do.

JEFF GORDON
The best player has been Marshall Faulk, hands down. He was the total package — clutch performer, smart player and an on-field leader. But Kurt Warner is my favorite. Watching him in training camp before his ascension, I believed he was a stiff. I’ll never forget those ducks he lobbed during a scrimmage in Champaign, Ill. And then, magically, he led the “Greatest Show on Turf” on an amazing Super Bowl run. He is the best story I’ve ever covered and arguably the nicest athlete as well.

DAN O’NEILL
Without question, Kurt Warner has been my favorite Rams player and, more than that, my favorite player of any team or any sport.

How do you top someone who is a record-setting quarterback, leads a dismal franchise to a championship and on top of that, is a wonderful human being? Warner doesn’t just honor God and his faith by pointing to the sky after he does something on the field, he honors them by treating other people with kindness, respect and generosity.

JEREMY RUTHERFORD
My favorite was London Fletcher. The undrafted linebacker was 5-foot-10 and 245 pounds, and if there was a tackle to be made, he made it. He was the Rams’ rookie of the year in 1998 and he was a big reason they won the Super Bowl in 2000. I had a chance to cover those Rams’ teams and Fletcher was one of the more affable, entertaining guys in the locker room, and he always wore a big smile. The defense hasn’t had a good middle linebacker since Fletcher signed with Buffalo as a free agent in 2002. The Rams didn’t think he was worth the big bucks, but somehow Fletcher is still making tackles in Washington.

No doubt Marshall Faulk was the best and most exciting player I have ever watched whether Ram or Cardinal.

What are you talking about Faulk never was a cardinal! Faulk is by far the Best Ram to hit the field.

My favorite St. Louis Ram is Isaac Bruce for all the reasons Bernie mentioned. My favorite all-time Rams: Jack Youngblood, Eric Dickerson, Isaac Bruce, and Kurt Warner. It’s interesting that there is no mention of Torry Holt by any of these guys.

I’ve got to say Marshall. I went to every home game in that ‘99 season and I remember watching him and just having my jaw drop at least twice a game. Like Burwell said, he made moves that no normal human could do. He was a great runner, great receiver, great blocker and great leader. Just thinking about it makes me want to go back and watch that Greatest Show on Turf season all over again. The electricity in the dome during those Minnesota and Tampa playoff games still gives me chills. I’ve never heard anything as loud as that Vikings game. It’s sad what has gone on there the past few years but hopefully Spags can return the Rams to glory.

Two of the most underrated players in Rams history are my favorites. Lawrence McCutcheon and Issac Bruce. McCutcheon was one of the most consistent RB’s in the 70’s. He played on some really good Ram teams… they should have made it to the Super Bowl at least 2-3 in the 70’s. McCutheon wasn’t flashy but all he did was crank out 1,000 yd year after year and never seemed to get much attention.

In 95′ Bruce had the 2nd best season for a WR in NFL history and wasn’t even voted to the Pro Bowl. Whoever had a vote that year should have lost their priviledges for good.

Don from Sac- You are a moron, Marge was not implying that Faulk was a Cardinal. What are you braindead?

Anyway Faulk is my favorite Ram of all time followed by Big Game

Kurt Warner….No question about it! The classiest player in all sports, And one hell of an arm to boot!!

Ricky Proehl. Made big catches. Unsung hero. His last TD catch in the Super Bowl against the Patriots was over shadowed by Brady’s comeback. The catch against Tampa Bay is one of the top plays in St Louis Sports History. 87 says “First Down”

Kurt Waner by leaps and bounds. Not only a great QB but a great person.

David “Deacon” Jones, the “Secretary of Defense”. Without him we wouldn’t have the “sack”. Retire his jersey, it’s the right thing to do.

Nolan Cromwell, his #21 jersey was far and away my most prized childhood possession. Great combination of brains and athleticism and seemed to be a decent guy.

Mine was Roman Gabriel. I know he wasn’t the best, but I remember as a kid how he stood strong against the likes of Butkiss, Nichke, and other killers on turf. This was back when dirty play (or rougher rules) meant a quarterback’s knees and head were fair game for pass rushers of all speeds and sizes.

Someone recently told me that Roman now owns a car dealership somewhere and creaks like a rusty tin man when he walks. I won’t ever forget how he was so hard to bring down back in 69.

Thanks for the pride and courage, Roman. It made for great football.

Having grown up in LA in the 70′ - 80’s I had a closer feeling to those guys than I do today, living in FL while the team is now in STL. But I have remainded dedicated for all 41 years of my life.
Pat Haden, Lawrence McCutcheon (SP) Pat Thomas, Wendal Tyler, Nolan Cromwell (Saw him play QB once), Jack & Jim Youngblood, Hacksaw, Cullen Bryant 300# FB), Jackie Slater.
This Group always seemed to run in to playing the Vikes in the playoffs, on a wet and windy day. Otherwise, they would have won a couple of SB.
Later years, London, Kurt, Issac, Orlando, Torry, Marshall.
Current player SJ, if he can play through a little pain. Bulger if he can be provided with a little time. Witherspoon back in the right position. And… I gotta tell ya, I love Ritchie Incognito. I know, I know. he’s gonna turn out to be a good player, a leader in the clubhouse and a long time Ram.

best vs. favorite. big distinction. faulk was probably best, but due to personality, guys like bruce and warner probably get more favorite votes. i take #80. he was great for a long time, restructured his deal to help the team and brought it every year for a long time.

It’s a toss up between Kurt and Marshall. In fact you have to call them co-favorites, I don’t see how you can name one over the other. Together, they complemented one another so perfectly that everything from a team perspective became possible because it extended out from them. For 3 years, the Rams were one of the greatest teams of all time, and it all starts with those 2 individuals. We are so lucky to have those 3 years in our memory bank.

I am caught between Faulk and Warner. I love them both. Faulk was the best all around player St. Louis had but Warner was the best story in the NFL and still is. Those were the days.

Kurt is a god in stl. How did vermiel get marsh there. I knew we were gonna be a 500 team. The rest is history. Well I’m in s.f. calif. territory and been gettin the you know what all of my cheerin days. I’m glad the rams are so loved in stl. but miss them. #84 Jack Snow, #80 The Rev. Issac, #88 & #81 Torry Holt. Dickerson had 9,000+ yrds. in 6 yrs would have shattered Payton’s record. What about Night Train Lane (ferocious), Slater,Deacon,Lamar,Merlin,Rosy, where does it all end? It never ends. Bleed blue and gold everyone - They did.

Hit em High - Hit em Low - RAMS FOOTBAL

Marshall, Marshall, Marshall as spoken by Chris Berman gets my vote easily. Not to mention his pure talent, I loved when he created plays for the offense and showed off his intellect for the game. Hopefully in the future, Faulk will take an active role in the Rams football operations. I have never seen a player with more knowledge for the game than Marshall. About Dan’s stupid shot at Pujols, that is ridiculously uncalled for. Pujols is just as giving and caring as Warner was. I mean the guy is human, you couldn’t as for a better sports figure to represent St. Louis.

Most loved Ram has to be Warner. Most talented Ram has to be Faulk. Most dedicated and consistantly productive Ram has to be Bruce. But if we are going to talk about all-time Rams then lets give the line some love…Jackie Slater, Orlando Pace, The Fearsome Foursome, Kevin Greene, and my personal hero and favorite Ram of all time Jack Youngblood!

Favorite all time RAM is # 85 JACK YOUNGBLOOD . 6 foot 4 & never over 245 lbs, played DE and always went against bigger guys, the NFL didnt keep track but the RAMS did. He averaged over 10 sacks a year for 14 years and only missed 1 game in 14 years . He played when men were men and turf toe didnt keep you from going into the game .

If this is not just a St Louis ram, I like Jack Youngblood—but if it is then who can argue with faulk, Warner and yes that was good about Bruce….

Isaac Bruce is THE St. Louis Ram and my favorite. Faulk was the best player for 3 years, but Isaac is and always will be the man.

Kurt Warner is my favorite ‘St. Louis’ Ram. Eric Dickerson is my favorite all time Ram player. They haven’t had a ‘game braker’ since! I didn’t see any 80 or 90 yard runs by Marshall! I like Marshall, he helped change the St. Louis franchise around but I was at the Tampa Bay game in Anaheim (80’s)when ‘E.D.’ ran for well over 200 yards. It was AMAZING to see!!

I go back to 1956 as a fan, but I’ll answer the question as posed. Isaac Bruce. He was, and is, such a brilliant receiver. It is obscene to see him in that dreaded SF uniform. Dreadful business.
Going all the way back, I really loved Jack Snow, Merlin Olsen , Roman Gabriel and Lawrence McCutcheon, to name a few.

I can’t just have one ‘Favortie Ram’, but i can say and you all have to agree that WR Torry Holt, OT Orlando Pace, and DE Leonard Little have been through thick and thin with the St. Louis Rams. THe Show good presence and energy in the locker room, as well as off of the field. Also, i have to acknowledge WR Isaac Bruce, even though he signed with our biggest rivals the San Francisco 49′ers (I hate them more than the Saints), He also put up numbers and records with the rams and has a good personality on and off the field.

If you want to talk pure talent, yes i agree; Marshall Faulk may be one of the greatests, if not the greatests; But Marshall was also known to have a bad attitude. Steven Jackson, young and full of talent, prestige, and more. Also how could we forget Dre’ Bly, possibly the best corner that the St. Louis Rams wouldd ever have had.

Favorite Ram is Kurt Warner or Issac Bruce, both for play, passion, and character. I did not like the game of football until I saw them play and they still come back to support the community.

Bruuuuuuuuuuce!!! The last LA Ram, a class act all around, great competitor, a role model for other players, always clutch, especially the 2000 superbowl. Best Ram ever, I was heartbroken when they let him go…to the 49ers. Ouch.

along with ” stateroom “,i too go back to the ESARLY ’50’s as a RAMS fan , when I loved players like Norm Van Brocklin , Hirsch , Fears , Tank, Deacon ,and Jaguar Jon Arnett, who ran with such balance as to be almost unbelieveable. For a year or two , we featured the ” Catawba Claw “,Bucky Pope. And the FOURSOME and YOUNGBLOODS were great as well.BUT , if we’re talking since being in St.Loo,and I luv both Marshall and Kurt , my favorite was Mr. First Down , Ricky Proehl.Had to play every game as if his career was on the line , never sure of his status for the following season , YET the man DELIVERED as if he was a HOF-er.

Faulk was great, of course, but the fan favorite has to be Kurt Warner! When Dick Vermeil announced that Kurt would take over for Trent Green and that the Rams would be competitive, few people believed him. Kurt ignored the slurs about his modest football experiences in Amsterdam and in the Arena League and produced the greatest season any NFL quarterback ever had enjoyed! Marino had a season or two in which his statistics were slightly better, but Kurt won the Super Bowl! He HAS TO BE the favorite!

I’m so glad somebody else mentioned Ricky Proehl. That catch against Tampa Bay was amazing. My personal favorite is Tory Holt. Outside of this past season, Holt always looks like he’s out there having fun. An amazing player since day 1, I am sad to see him go. I’m cheering for a Rams-Jaguars Super Bowl.

Aneas Williams. He’s a great player and person. Highlights of his career are leading us to Super Bowl 36 where he returned two interceptions for touchdowns and recovered a fumble against Brett Farve and the packers. Then in the next game he picked off McNabb to put away the game.
