Ponying up for Pronger?

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: Should the Blues have traded for Chris Pronger knowing that they were just a few days away from buying out Jay McKee?

JEREMY RUTHERFORD
No. The price tag was simply too much for Pronger. The Ducks wanted a package of players and the names mentioned were Patrik Berglund, T.J. Oshie and David Backes. I would keep them and take my chances signing Pronger next season. The decision to buyout McKee came Monday, as the team tried to free up enough money to re-sign Mike Weaver and Brad Winchester, and a goalie in free agency.

DERRICK GOOLD
The bundle of players and picks Philadelphia had to pay to get Pronger borders on absurd, so even though a move for Pronger made so much sense for the Blues — especially with the release of McKee imminent — the p.r. and the performance just wasn’t worth that price. But buying out McKee leaves the Blues exposed to a bigger question. Now that they’ve alleviated some cap space on their payroll, how will they spend it? Will there be goals at the end of the stick they can now woo? Bring on the scoring forward. Because as swell as it would be for the Chattering Class to have Pronger back in front of the mics, ready for that red light to pop on, or back for another round of those screaming scrums in the hallway, the Blues don’t need a talker, even if he plays a mean blue line. They need scorer.

TOM TIMMERMANN
Every trade hinges on what the other team wants, and if the Ducks were looking for more than the Flyers gave up, that would be a pretty steep price. But even at a good price, the Blues might not “need” Pronger. (If he were free, then by all means …) They’re not replacing their No. 1 defenseman. They’re replacing their No. 5 or 6 defenseman. At that price, McKee was way overpaid. If you move Eric Brewer and Erik Johnson back into the equation, and maybe Alex Pietrangelo, pretty soon the words most associated with McKee would be “healthy scratch.” The Blues don’t need a high-priced defenseman. Pronger’s salary would also limit their ability to spend money on a goalscorer.

ANDY STRICKLAND (Hockeybuzz.com, KFNS)
When looking at the Chris Pronger situation, it’s important to understand one thing. Ducks GM Bob Murray was determined not to trade his largest asset, and one of the best defensemen in the world, to another Western Conference team. If you think the Flyers gave up a lot (which they did) just think what the Blues would have had to part with to acquire the greatest D-man in the history of the Blues organization. (Yes I said best D-man to ever play for the Blues.) I love how teams like Philly and the New York Rangers year after year chase the Stanley Cup only to get bounced early in the playoffs. The Blues are trying to build a Cup winner, not chase one. Do I wish the Blues were able to land Pronger? Absolutely. But it had be realistic in terms of what they needed to part with. The cap hit for the next two seasons for McKee is around $1.4, now they can go out and get another player for around $2.5 which adds up to the same $4 million number McKee would have cost if they had hung onto him.

KEVIN WHEELER (Host of “Sports Open Line” on KMOX)
No, not at the price that was paid to get him. The Flyers gave up three first round picks (2010, 2011 and 2008 1st rounder Luca Sbisa) and a 25-year-old Joffrey Lupul, who has 102 career goals. All that plus a conditional 3rd-round pick is too much to pay for a guy who makes a lot of money and can be a free agent after the 2009-2010 season. Heck, if Pronger doesn’t like it in Philly (wouldn’t that be a shock given the nature of the sports scene there) the Blues can try to sign him next offseason without having to give up a player.

There are deals I would have made to get Pronger, like a player off the roster and the No. 17 pick, but not what Philly parted with. He would certainly make the Blues a lot better for this season and I’m all for trading kids for impact players heading into a year where you expect to make the playoffs, but you can’t mortgage too much of the future just yet.

Wow, Andy, I hope MacInnis doesn’t read this. If Pronger reads it he’ll be hugging people all over the place.

I totally agree that the price ANA wanted was too much for someone who would be UFA a year from now. Would love to see # 44 back, but not at the expense of Oshoe, Berglund and/or Backes. Philly was insane. Their GM should be fired…

Pronger belongs in Philly, a gutless thug like him will be a fan favorite in no time. I’d prefer we never see him in a Blues sweater ever again.

Jackman5 - IMHO, Strickland may be right. How many other defencemen in the history of the game have won the Hart and Norris in the same year? I see the point about Al, but he’s not able to be mentioned in the same breath as Bobby Orr and Chris Pronger when you ask that question.

Too much for a one year deal and a 35 (almost) year old player. No guarantees that you can get him to sign a multiyear and I don’t want to spend a ton of cap money on an aging veteran. Yes, he might play as long as Chelios but I doubt it.

Andy…did you forget that Scott Stevens played here?

Pronger in the same breath as Orr? Give me a break, if anyone belongs there in that same breath it is MacInnis - props on Stevens, but only a year wearing the Note. Pleased the Blues didn’t spend off the future to give a few fans a chance to relive a part of this franchise’s past. Time to move on…

Why would we want the dirtiest player in the NHL here with the blues? You guy’s are the same one’s who where happy to get rid of him and now you can only say how good he is or was. Taking dumb penalties late in the game, I wouldn’t want him back at any price. He’s overrate and OVER PAID.

stlsportsfan - You must be joking to compare Pronger to Orr. Please tell me how Pronger has CHANGED the game of hockey? That is what Orr did, there are very few that can be compared to Orr. I would take MacInnis and/or Scott Stevens over Pronger any day and maybe even Plager and I think Pronger is a great player.

Timmerman - it’s not about replacing a #1 defenseman it is about ACQUIRING one, which we don’t have!!!

Easy on Pronger, guys. Is he dirty? Yes. Is he as great as Orr? Hard to say as they played in two very different eras of the sport. Pronger certainly didn’t transcend the sport like Orr, but he does instantly turn a team into a legitimate Stanley Cup contender.

Pronger kind of has that Shaq essence, where just his presence makes you feel like you have a shot. Granted he never took us to a final, but when was the last time that happened…Woodstock?

Pronger is that guy you hate to play but when he’s on your squad you couldn’t be happier. Say what you will, but Pronger is a winner. That being said…the price was way to high. Perhaps the Note can bid on him in free agency.

Pronger did nothing to win the Stanley Cup. If not for being paired with Scott Neidermeyer, Pronger would still be the Stanley cup bridesmaid. Pronger didn’t win in St Louis, Edmonton, nor in Anahiem. He was merely on the team that won.
The Blues need scorers and they need RW’er who is always hanging out in front of the net (Hull). But they desperately need a GT. Chris Mason is not a 1st half guy, so hopefully the Blues can get Ty Conklin. He is a Blue Killer.
The Blues don’t need Chris Pronger. The Blues need a guy who can score and lead a weak PP unit and a lights out GT.

No way no how do you give up Berglund, Perron, Oshie, Johnson, Pietrangelo, Cole, or Eller.

Everyone else is expendable.

You guys are crazy!!!! Do I think we need Pronger? No, But a goal scorer? We have atleast 2 30+ goal scores and several 20+ goal scores. We need to load up a point playing right handed shot for the power play and a strong number 2 goletender. We are more than fine in the forward positions. Need a little help on the blue line and a lot of help in nets.

Blues need a head coach. What’s the point of adding a scorer when all he would do is dump the puck in. Pronger is a waste and my memories were a good player who never raised his play when it was needed most in the playoffs, It seemed at every key moment he would lose his composure and take a dumb penalty. Give me Al in his prime anytime. Let’s not get cocky here, if Mason didn’t play super Blues would have played 4 games less last year. Dopn’t get suckered into the injury excuse. Still a ways to go but at least it makes you smile thinking about all the young talent

I don’t know how Strickland can say that Pronger was the best to ever wear the Blue Note. I’m not convinced that he was even the best on the team. I think MacInnis was not only a gifted defenseman, but he was so much smarter a defenseman than anybody else I ever saw play here.

I don’t see that goal scoring is really the Blues’ biggest issue. With Boyes, Kariya, MacDonald, Oshie, Perron, Backes, Berglund, Winchester, and Tkachuk; the Blues have 3 lines that every player will be above 15 goals. These guys are going to have significantly more opportunities to put the puck in the net if we can get more consistent outlet passing from the D. In addition, if they had goaltending in the first half that even resembled the second half, this team would have finished probably 4th in the West.

We need the Erics to provide the kind of consistent defense that neither Jackman, McKee, nor Woywitka showed last year; and they need Mason to be consistently good all year long. Coupled with the playoff experience that the young players gained last year, this team will have a much better chance to make some noise in the playoffs this year.

Chopper was the best, any goaltender who faced him would agree. The PP has never been the same since Al’s eye injury, did everyone forget how it felt when he wound up for a big slapper and the other team’s goalie would duck to get out of the way.

Would Philly trake Brewer, Woywitka, and Doug Lynch for Pronger? Brewer is a world class defencemen who rarely turns over the puck infront of his own net, he can clear the zone easier than an etch-e-sketch, and he has a blistering shot. Who wouldn’t want Brewer? Brewer gets the tough assignments and logs alot of minutes.
