Lohse or Wellemeyer? Who do Cardinals need most?

THE WATERCOOLER:
Kyle Lohse pitches tonight against the Reds and Todd Wellemeyer on Tuesday. Neither has had the same numbers as last season. Which pitcher’s return to form is more important for the Cardinals?

JOE STRAUSS:
Either would be nice. Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright are arguably right there with the Giants’ Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as the NL’s most productive 1-2. Joel Pineiro enjoys a Top 15 ERA without the deserved W-L. The need for a fifth starter only eight times the remainder of the season would suggest it’s more important that Lohse find his bearings. TLR suggested Wednesday in New York that Lohse is improving physically but is not 100 percent since his 39-day stay on the disabled list due to a forearm strain. Wellemeyer appears to be on probation and must find something positive from Tuesday’s start. Is it a problem? Sure. However, the Chicago Cubs currently miss Carlos Zambrano and Ted Lilly from their rotation. The Cardinals could get by a with a 3-man turn if they reach the Division Series and could squeeze 6 starts from three arms in a 7-game NLCS. Talk show angst aside, many would take the Cardinals’ problems right now.

BERNIE MIKLASZ:
Lohse. The 5th starter won’t get as many turns as the 4th starter the rest of the way. It’s important for the Cardinals to get Lohse back in 2008 form, because if he does they can line up a row of four quality starters. And few teams come close to that. Nudging this ahead into the future, if the Cardinals make the playoffs the fourth starter will get some assignments. Another reason why Lohse must get rolling.

RICK HUMMEL:
Lohse’s performance is more important because that spot in the rotation will get two or three more starts then Wellemeyer’s. And Wellemeyer could go to the bullpen, which Lohse really hasn’t done on any regular basis.

DERRICK GOOLD:
Kyle Lohse. Hands down. The Cardinals plan to limit the need for a fifth starter as much as possible, and that immediately reduces the impact Todd Wellemeyer could have on the remainder of the season. Lohse will start every five days and must provide the kind of quality starts that could determine whether a series is won, split or swept. Lohse’s ability to reconnect with his 2008 self has gained increased importance with Joel Pineiro’s road-trip troubles. Lohse has been billed as the team’s No. 3 starter, and the Cardinals are going to need him to pitch up to his billing to stay ahead and pull away from the Cubs.

JEFF GORDON:
Lohse is more important. This team needs four strong starting pitchers to have a real shot in postseason play. This team needs to get Lohse back to where he was last season — when he was the No. 1 starter for much of the campaign. A year ago, he could win some tough match-ups. Based on that, he should be the No. 3 starter behind Carpenter and Wainwright this season.

The fifth starter is the fifth starter. The Cards are 5-0 when Boggs pitches, so, despite La Russa’s protestations, the team could always revisit that in a pinch. Getting Lohse back to normal has to be the bigger priority. Come playoff time, the fifth starter might not even make the active 25-man roster for any of the series.

Couldn’t agree more. The first reason Lohse’s return to form is well documented above; the 5th starter is only going to be needed a few more times in 2009. The second reason is the fact that Kyle Lohse makes a lot of money and he’ll be wearing a Cards uniform for the next few seasons. I’d much rather see the big bucks paid out to a guy who is having success on the field.

I agree with Lohse. Our number 5 becomes nearly irrelevant down the stretch with the off days.

Bernie, Jeff, Joe or Derrick, do you have any insight if the Cards are interested in Smoltz? I know his era and whip are terrible, but i saw he still has a 7.4 K per 9 ratio so it would seem to me that he still has something left in the tank, maybe as a set up guy for Franklin especially since Motte has been struggling a little?

Thanks guys

Why don’t we use Boggs as a fifth starter?

No thanks on the Smoltz interest, he cannot get lefthanded batters out this season which would limit him to being a righthanded specialist and those don’t exist in MLB.

As to a 5th starter, I wonder why Blake Hawksworth has not been given any consideration. We tried Boggs a few times. Why not try Blake now?
Wellemeyer is not getting the job done.

Lohse is the one we need to return to his old form!!!!!
Why dont the Cardinals give Blake Hawksworth a chance to be the # 5 starter?????

IS THIS A JOKE??????????????? Why are we even still taling about Wellemeyer. The guy has been pitching worse than any pitcher in the majors for months. Lohse is solid and just needs to get healthy. It’s unbelieveable that this is even a topic.

LaRussa stated that he thinks Hawksworth is an important component of the bullpen. Hard to argue with that, especially with Motte scuffling as others have noted. Why tinker with Hawksworth’s success as a setup guy just for the minimal starts he would get as the 5th guy in the rotation.

Honestly, I can’t believe that Wellemeyer isn’t in the baseball equivalent of Siberia. Give Boggs and the other kid a chance or two.

I wonder if the Cards are concerned about Lohse physically. The use of Wellemeyer tomorrow makes a lot more sense if they are. If they think Lohse is shaky, going forward they may need 2 guys out of Wellemeyer/Boggs/Hawksworth. In that case you don’t want Wellemeyer to go too long between starts so you give him tomorrow’s; Boggs can get another turn in Memphis and still take the Aug 17 start.

Hawksworth, I understand not wanting to mess with him as they need help in the pen. Plus he’d be on a low pitch count at first. And if Lohse *is* questionable, you need long men for today/tomorrow.

Why is it even a question? Of course it is Lohse.

Wellemeyer is a free agent at the end of the season. If he doesn’t get back to form, he can go to free agency as a reliever. Lohse is in the 1st year of a 4yr/41M contract. If he doesn’t get back to form, the Cardinals will have a financial albatross in the middle of the rotation.

If either Lohse or Wellemeyer come close to last year’s performances. There will be plenty happy faces around these parts.

Agreed; Going into the season Lohse was a solid # three starter. He was awarded a good contract based on that belief. If Kyle can get the act together that he is very capable of doing going down the home stretch the Cards will win the NLC and be a mighty threat in the playoffs.

Agree 100%, it’s got to be Lohse. Besides the fact that Wellemeyer’s troubles have engulfed the entire season thus far (while Lohse actually started out reasonably well, until he was beset by a series of weird incidents), Lohse is a better pitcher with better stuff. His ceiling is higher than Wellemeyer’s, imo. As Gordo pointed out, he was the staff ace for much of the season last year, so we’ve seen that he can do a lot for this team.

I would like to ask what in the world a single 2-inning scoreless outing (with some shaky moments, let’s be honest) did to warrant Wellemeyer’s getting another chance at the 5th spot, after a season-long vomit fest? He hasn’t been able to figure anything out all season long and yet, he is supposed to have now figured it out after only 2 weeks in the BP and only to BP outings? Boggs did okay and there’s still Blake Hawksworth, who has done much more to show he can pitch multiple innings with little or no damage than Wellemeyer has. I’m sorry to say it, but my optimism isn’t high for the game on Tuesday. It would be a darn shame to lose it and end a winning streak if they get the win tonight.

not to be as harsh as some others, but i am a bit surprised this was even a question

Neither guy is important in the long run-they both stink and the less we see the better.
The wild card for the Cardinals in late September & the playoffs will be Jaime Garcia who is now rehabbing at West Palm. As a lefthander, he will be a mainstay when we play the Phillies & Rockies-two LH hitting power teams that will rake Wellemeyer or Lohse.
And we should add another lefty either Manning or Ring- I’m not worried about anyone but the Phillies and Rockies- if the Card are smart this is a WS year.
