Seeking a surprise game-changer for Rams

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: Though camp is still in its very early days, who is one offensive player that you think could surprise St. Louis Rams fans this season?

JEFF GORDON
Richie Incognito became a popular target of criticism last year, due to his undisciplined play. But the guy is a beast. I can see Steven Jackson running right behind Incognito and Jason Smith all day. That is a formidable tag team. Sandwiched between the two Jasons — two potential team leaders — Richie could finally come into his own.

BILL COATS
That could be tight end Daniel Fells. He’s knocked Joe Klopfenstein, a former No. 2 draft pick, down the depth chart with his stout play during practice. He has very good hands and is an adept blocker. The only question for Fells is, can he do it on Sundays?

KATHLEEN NELSON
Wide receiver Keenan Burton. He had a few injuries that held him back last year, but he’ll be pushed by the veterans the Rams have signed in the offseason, especially Laurent Robinson and Ronald Curry.

ROGER HENSLEY
Can you call a team’s No. 1 wide receiver a surprise? Given just one year of experience — and that being on a team that had trouble moving the ball through the air last season — I’d say yes. So I’ll go with Donnie Avery. His numbers as a rookie weren’t bad — 53 catches for 674 yards and three TDs. But that was with Torry Holt lining up on the other side of the field to relieve some pressure. Now Avery is being asked to be the man. With Steven Jackson pounding the ball between the tackles with any consistency and if Marc Bulger can get any time in the pocket and rediscover the accuracy he showed just a few years back, Avery should find room to roam through defensive backfields. I believe he’ll be a difference-maker for the Rams this year. Oh, did I mention that Bulger hit Avery for a 50-yard touchdown pass in practice Sunday? Stay tuned.

KEVIN WHEELER (Host of “Sports Open Line” on KMOX)
Randy McMichael. Before coming to St. Louis he was a significant weapon for the Miami Dolphins, recording 195 catches from 2004-2006. He’s still only 30 years old and he’s got a chance to be the possession guy for Marc Bulger. If he can stay healthy, McMichael could well be the team’s most consistent receiving threat and with his size could also be a top option in the red zone.

How about Alex Barron. He has’nt been consistent on the right side but hes better left tackle than right because… that was his position for most of his college days, but ppl never realized that. Sure he gets alot of false starts, yea he needs to work on that. Butttttttt hes got talent, hes big, strong, quick feet, and hes got long arms, which is good for a tackle. I beleive playing left tackle and right tackle is def a different position and it shows because is best season was on the left side, so hopefully he can prove to the whole Rams nation that he can be a really good left tackle.

Michael Vick, anyone?

Yes, I know, he did awful, terrible things, and he went to jail and served his sentence. Jamal Lewis also did time for a major offense, and no one wondered if he should return to the NFL. Ray Lewis was VERY closely connected to a homicide, but the league had no problem welcoming him back among the elite.

From a football perspective, Vick is one of the top 10 most difficult players to defend. He can still be a star in this league. Marc Bulger wouldn’t even be among the top 10 players in JUCO. He’s done.

If this team wants to get back above .500 any time soon, it should take a chance on Vick. I say this knowing the organization has no intention of pursuing him, which is why we’re in for a long slog back to FB relevance.

I think the fact that 5 people picked 5 different guys speaks volumes. A lot of potential here… but also a lot of untested youngsters. It ought to be an exciting season. I want to see SJ lead the league in rushing this year. No reason it can’t happen.

Vick hasn’t played in the NFL in two years. Granted, when he was in the league he was a consistent threat but even then, not in the top 10 best players. There’s a good reason he is still unsigned today. In the last two years, his football playing has been limited to him tossing the ball around in his backyard during the work release part of his jail sentence. I absolutely think Vick deserves a second chance. He served his time and should be reinstated fully, but I think most teams are correct in assuming that his football skills are highly rusty and he needs to somehow show that his skills aren’t gone for good.

I agree with Wheeler. McMichael’s first season here, he was way underused and last year he was hurt. I think he’s a real threat. I also have liked what I’ve seen in his interviews the last few years. Seems like a real pro.

Why does Vick deserve another chance? He deserves a chance to make a living; he does not deserve another chance to play in the NFL. No team should feel obligated to give him a shot.

A lawyer who crosses certain ethical boundaries and is caught is bisbarred; never to practice again. A market trader found guilty of securities infractions ( insider trading, etc.) has his liscense revoked.

Can Vick earn a living? sure; in the NFL? not in my opinion.

I agree with Kevin. People have forgotten about Randy, but that was a one of the few solid pickups by Scott Linehan.

Michael Vick does indeed deserve to make a living, but any NFL team that signs him will face a PR nightmare. Plus, the Rams have many pressing needs that should be met before they consider Vick.

Lawn care would be a good field for him.
Or dog walking.

My opinion is Pat Shurmur, OC. If his plan works, then the Rams win. And the other guy is Ken Flajoles, DC. If his defense can stop the RBs and the big plays, the Rams will be 11-5.
The Rams can win without Bulger, but they can’t win without Jackson or the equivolent RB.

Take your Vick cr#p elsewhere. The article had nothing to do with Vick.

By the way I am kidding. Why would anyone want Vick now. Who know when he will come back. Goodell just said he would revisit the situation after week 6. I hope for big things from the o line this year. If that happens hopefully everything else will start to fall into place. Its too bad no one seems to have faith in Bulger. Give him a good line and a dominate run game and I think his play will elivate as well.

game-breaker……get Vick signed. why let a guy get away who can change the dynamics of the backfield??? we are nutty to put all the Rams eggs in one basket….steven jackson. the way it stands if Jackson was hurt and not able to play, the Rams would be sitting ducks on offense. Vick can throw, run, catch passes…and fill up the Dome. just the kind of electricity to generate greater success.

at least….what have they got to lose? the whole town would be buzzing.

I think Laurent Robinson will surprise he has an explosive skill set. Also watch out for TE Daniel Fells.
