What are Rams’ biggest concerns?

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: If you were Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo, after watching the first two preseason games what would be your biggest area(s) of concern?

JIM THOMAS
If you can’t stop the run, you will not win consistently in the NFL. As a defensive oriented coach, Spagnuolo had to be concerned about the run defense — or lack thereof — against Atlanta. Especially after all those live tackling drills and an entire preseason spent trying to establish an attitude.

BILL COATS
The first-team offense’s inability to score a touchdown so far. Even though that unit was missing several key players Friday vs. the Falcons, it still was in Atlanta territory four times and produced only a single field goal. The week before, the first unit delivered two field goals vs. the Jets. That’s a lot of wasted opportunity and certainly no recipe for success.

JEFF GORDON
Run defense. The offensive line wasn’t great in Week 2, either, but it was missing Jacob Bell and Alex Barron to start the game. The defense had the bulk of its front seven rotation healthy and it couldn’t even slow down the first-unit Atlanta running game. If this team doesn’t improve there, it is looking at double-digit losses again. A LOT of money has been spent on shoring up that D, so it’ll be interesting to watch what happens the next two weeks.

KEVIN WHEELER (Host of “Sports Open Line” on KMOX)
My biggest concern would be the defensive line and cornerback. I can give the offense a little bit of a break from the last game because they were without their starting QB and two first-team offensive linemen, but the defense was shredded by the Falcons. It’s important to note that the Falcons are a very strong offensive team and they’re going to do that kind of stuff to other teams in the regular season, but without a stout run defense it’s hard for me to see the team improving much. That starts on the line. As for corner, well, it may be time to move on from Tye Hill. If he doesn’t show something Thursday in Cincy this armchair QB would have to bump him down the depth chart a couple of spots.

Mr. Wheeler is the only voice of reason it seems. The Atlanta rushing game is their identity on offense. The will be trashing a lot of good defenses. I can see the Rams Fans jumping to conclusions, but writers are supposed to be more knowledgable and not just follow the national media’s words. Everyone and their brother in the Media forgets Atlanta has Turner and a good offensive line. Plus, Spags stated before the first PS game that these games are an extension of practice for evaluation. Yes takling was bad, but Spags is seeing what he needs to fix. Atlanta doesn’t need to evaluate during PS … they aleady have core players and schemes in place.

I’m still wishing we had traded up to draft Haloti Ngata in 2006.

I believe fast midgets have a role in the NFL. Who cares if I can’t cover ? I would like to remind the readers I was drafted in the 1st Round.
P.S. the money is great !!!

Tye Hill will stay if only for some depth.

I happpen to have the “new blue” seats and I found that I was unable to sit straight out because my knees were pressed tight against the seat in front of me. I am 6ft3in. tall and most of the taller individuals I saw in those sections were sitting sideways, thank God their were a few empty seats around. Something needs to be done with thie problem.

The defense is going to have to pump itself up, because they will be the load carriers for some time.

I have 4 seats in section 111 I will trade you that may have more leg room,I would like the cushion seats! Unlike most comments I have heard I really liked the dome upgrades.

You could have picked on of us last year and this year. You blew it. Tebow waiting…probably not. You’ll pick another project linemen or mid-range defensive player. That 90’s Show continues…

I like Cliff Ryan, he’s solid. Darell Scott, Adam Carriker, Hollis Thomas, one of these guys has GOT to emerge as a run-stuffer along side Ryan or it’s gonna be ugly. As I watch Chris Long struggling on the end to shed blocks I wonder how Carriker would do out there on running downs and have Long float along the line a bit in passing situations. It’s a domino effect, as we stop the run, our pass rush will be better, therefore our secondary will be better because they won’t have to cover as long. It starts with stopping the run, c’mon boys keep improving.

I look at the Rams through rose colored glasses so I asked some co workers what they thought of the Rams. One guy just laughed. Another guy said ” I Don’t”. One guy had a interesting comment. He said ” that Butler is a hitter, your LBs look good but your D line stinks.Atlanta ran right through ‘um”. I began to wonder how the 2 starting tackles on the leagues worst run defense the last 2 years hold on to their starting jobs. Carricker is a DE, Long is a LB, replace Ryan with Scott an Thomas.

First team offense still can’t score. Each of the last several pre-seasons it’s been the same, excuses are made, and the offense stinks in the season as well. We are seeing a problem that has been going on for years and it still is not fixed.

The Rams give up more big plays in one game than most teams do in an entire season.. That is what a reputation for being soft will get you.

Thank you Thomas and Wheeler! Finally someone who knows what is the biggest and foremost problem with the Rams since Martz’s takeover! It also doesn’t help that they are piss-poor tacklers as well. Isn’t there some coaches that say that one should focus on the number on the player and tackle him because that part of the body is the indicator of which direction the man is going? Where are these coaches that teach that? Atlanta is not the best in the league or they would have been in the NFC championship game! It indicates that the Rams need someone who is a Premiere run stopper and should have addressed that in the draft. The DTs the Rams get are either old or injury prone and not worth their salt! It doesn’t help that their LBs are mediocre either!

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to evaluate the Rams and realize that the D-line is horrid. Problem is, in the NFL, you can’t just dump the lousy players or trade them easily. The cap hits will kill you. I like Spags and I really believe that he and Devaney will eventually right the ship. One thing Spags can’t do….coach talent. I mean, he can coach these guys all he wants on the D-line….. But, IMHO, they’ve maxed their potential. What you see is what you’ll continue to get unfortunately.

Both sides of this debate have valid points However what does it tell you that in our first home game with a new coach our defense looks uninspired and the offense looks bland and predictable? I know it’s early and we are supposed to be patient but if we cannot stop the Bengals and don’t score a TD with our number ones this week it will be time to worry.

Question: Has anyone seen Aaron Curry play yet? Is he looking good?

Say what you want, there are a lot of good looking young players on this team. It is literally impossible to integrate new guys until you have found out who you have as starters, and what they can and cannot do, will and will not do. I fully expect some of our promising new faces to replace some of our first string dead wood. But Spags has to figure out who is worth keeping and who is not worth keeping. I think that by the sixth game of the season you will be seeing a much different team, with some of the pretenders relegated to back-up duty, or even outright released. Frankly, I have been shocked at some of the lackadasical play by some of the guys from last year. Some of them look like they think it’s still last year, and some of them look like it was a mistake to ever offer them a contract. Yes, Tye Hill does come to mind - among others. Regarding the supposed weakness at cornerback, I think we have some strong new guys at that position, but so far Spags has seemed to be looking over who has played in the past, I imagine giving them enough rope to hang themselves. I believe we will gradually see better performers being brought forward as they start to learn the ropes in this league.

D-Line? Some of the guys were making reads, but we’ve just got to tackle–heck, we’ll fix that. Seriously, Gibson is on track to surprise a lot of people. Keep an eye on him, but I think the Rams as a team are on a 2-3 year plan for success.

Boys it all begins with the draft. Can you name the last first round impact player the Rams have taken since they were Super Bowl Champs? Right, one. Stephen Jackson. Of course he has been hurt the last couple of years. Also very few players that get cut end up on other teams. Why, because they are not NFL matterial. Here is the list of first round busts or have left the team. 2000 Trung Candidate-gone (Tom Brady still playing), 2001 Demione Lewis, Adam Archuleta & Ryan Picket (playing with other teams), 2002 Robert Thomas-gone, 2003 Jimmy Kennedy-Gone, 2004 Steven Jackson (give you that one), 2005 Alex Barron (Please stop all the false starts), 2006 Tye Hill (which we traded out of our pick to take him). Could have taken Jay Cutler, 2 problems solved. 2007 Adan Carriker (plays out of position), and 2008 Chris Long. verict still out on him. they need to draft Better.

Rami, You are 100% correct. It starts with the draft. My pick for next year is Taylor Mays out of USC. He will make wide outs fear coming across the middle.

My biggest concern is regular season game #1. Followed by game #2. Then #3. You get the picture.
