Rams’ fans: This player may surprise you!

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: With Sunday’s opener now just days away, who is one player who you feel could really surprise Rams fans this year?

JIM THOMAS
There will be rough moments along the way, but CB Jonathan Wade has an agressive attitude, top-end speed, and decent size. Most of all, it looks like he has matured. Some take longer than others, but it looks like Wade now gets it — what it takes to be an NFL player. Coach Steve Spagnuolo has a lot of experience on his resume working with cornerbacks.

BRYAN BURWELL
Laurent Robinson could be the big surprise at wide receiver. He showed in the preseason that he can make plays and he will get plenty of opportunities on a team looking for WR’s to establish themselves.

BILL COATS
Because he seems to have so many detractors around town, I’ll go with Marc Bulger. The new Rams offense demands precision and accuracy from the QB, arguably Bulger’s greatest assets. If the line can protect him and he can adjust to the quick drops and throws — and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be able to — he has a chance to have a big year.

KEVIN WHEELER (Host of “Sports Open Line” on KMOX)
Randy McMichael is a guy who could surprise some people. With the team lacking name players at wide receiver, McMichael could be a big part of the passing attack if he can stay healthy. I’m not sure he’s as athletic as he used to be in his best days with the Dolphins, but he’s a big target who would be an asset especially in red zone situations. Laurent Robinson and Donnie Avery are speedy receivers who will make their share of plays but they’re not very big and McMichael has both the size and the hands to be Marc Bulger’s safety blanket. I’d be remiss if I didn’t also mention Daniel Fells, one of the backups to McMichael. Fells’ teammates rave about his athletic abilities so we’ll see if that translates into game action.

I think Kyle Boller will surprise some people when he takes over for an injured Bulger week 3…

i liked this article I agree with all the picks, and i think and have been saying for weeks that these guys you listed will be the reason i think we can win our division. I think the seahawks will be flops if im not wrong hasselbeck hasnt played a full season in like 3yrs so, and they wont have walter jones back for awhile i think by time he gets back Matt will be out of the line up. I think KW(kurt warner) as much as i love him is finally gonna have that final fall off year and i think leinart will be tossing INT out in the desert and the 49ers still dont have a QB or a real offensive line they have some D. But i think since we play the cowboys this year and the redskins we always play those 2 teams very well. with our division opponents i can see this team surprising alot of people with a 9-7 possibly 10-6 team this year and make the playoffs we will lose immediatly i think but none the less we can win the worless west lol. But i think with the new center we have the MLB and new SS and a blocking fullback we’ve completely revamped the middle of the field and thats been our problem for years is getting gashed up the middle wether its been on D or O. But i’ve been to training camp several times and Laurent robinson has made some plays and i think you give him a full game and he can be a 6 or 7 catch a game guy and McMicheals if healthy will be a threat along with donnie avery we dont have game changers but we have guys you have to account for so they cant just stack the box against SJ or drop everyone back in coverage i think half of our problems these years have been that were too predictable. JMO of course but the last two years at the beginning of the season alot of people thought we could surprise some people which we didnt but whats different this year we’ve gotten younger and stronger this last year. Dorrell Scott looked powerful in camp this year i think he will help the loss of carriker being on IR.

Chalk my vote up under the “Jonathan Wade will surprise,” collumn.

OK, so he’s not a big name; but, over the course of the season I bet Billy Bajema proves to be a big surprise. Hired for his blocking — and a real four pillars Spags guy — he showed he can catch and run. I’m thinking a key third down each game where he sneaks out and keeps important drives alive.

Good analysis Labeda. I agree but I say we win the division at 8-8. If the injury bug hits Warner or Hasselbeck, we are the only team left standing in that pathetic division.

Robinson gets my vote on this one. He’s played tougher than his rep in preseason. With Avery back he should get some 1 on 1 matchups to win and with his size and speed he should do well.

Steven Jackson will be a nice surprise when he is able to again play a 16-game schedule and give the Rams a powerful red-zone runner who punishes DBs, especially in the 4th quarter.

I’m not sure this qualifies as a surprise, but, I think Steven Jackson will surprise people with a big game. He’s been kept under wraps all pre-season and I think he’s more than ready to go.

Wouldn’t surprise me to see him rack up 150 yds on the ground and in the air. As Jackson goes on Sunday, so go the Rams.

I really like Avery and Robinson but Stanely could break out as well. He could be a stud if he started getting consistant. Jackson is always a threat but will only be great if Karney stays healthy and starts opening some holes for him so he doesn’t have to do it all himself. Lets also not forget the homestate boy Allen III.

I just want the Rams to play a solid game from start to finish, I don’t even care if they win or lose. I want to be surprised by a solid effort on all fronts!

Vobora will prove that he’s not irrelevant.

Though you say he is “not very big”, Laurent Robinson is listed at 6′2″.

My thoughts are our secondary is still weak, with no big hitter on guard.
Bulger holds the ball to long and the off.line is soft. Let’s hope Jackson can produce or Bulger will be gone by game 2. No pressure on the opposing QB will kill us again. How did we fall so fast?
