Road just gets harder for Rams

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: The Rams are 0-2 and the schedule offers no relief in the near future. The Packers (1-1) come to town this weekend, then the Rams have to travel to San Francisco to take on the division-leading Niners (2-0) before coming home again to face the 2-0 Vikings. Do you see any chance that this team doesn’t begin the season at 0-5? If so, what has to happen?

BERNIE MIKLASZ
It’s up to the lines. The Rams offensive line has too many breakdowns that kill drives and scoring chances. The defensive line has one sack in two games and is doing nothing to disrupt the QB. As long as the Rams continue to get slapped around up front, the losing will continue. They need better game management from the coaches. And someone — anyone — has to step up and make some plays. There is a critical shortage of playmakers on this team.

JIM THOMAS
I’m not saying that it will happen, but anything can happen in this league. Ask Pittsburgh. Ask Green Bay. Ask New England. Ask Tennessee. But for the Rams to spring an upset in the next few weeks, they need more productiion from their offense, and fewer mistakes overall.

BILL COATS
The Packers just lost at home to the Bengals, so they certainly don’t look unbeatable. And I’m not sold on the 49ers just yet. So, I think those two games are winnable. Of course, that’s predicated on the the Rams being better — maybe a lot better — than they’ve shown so far.

JEFF GORDON
To win a game, the Rams must muscle up on both lines. The franchise has invested plenty in its linemen and we saw some progress on that front during Sunday’s physical game. The defensive front must establish a pass rush without blitz help. If it can do that, it will allow the Rams to be more effective when they do blitz. The front seven must also toughen up against the run. On the offensive side, the Rams must continue improving its run blocking and pass protection. Pound Steven Jackson on the ground and through the air, eat up some clock, force some more turnovers on the defensive side — the Rams CAN win a game by making some basic improvements.

KATHLEEN NELSON
A victory will be tough, but I suspect the coaching staff knew that coming into the season. It all starts up front. Marc Bulger needs better protection, and the run defense, particularly in the front, needs to step it up. If the Rams improve in those two areas, they level the playing field a bit and give themselves a chance Any Given Sunday.

KEVIN WHEELER (Host of “Sports Open Line” on KMOX)
Well, there’s always a chance they could win one of the next three games but I don’t think it’s likely. The Packers and Vikings are clearly better teams than the Rams and it’s hard for me to see them dropping a game to the offensively challenged Rams. The home team’s best shot to win one of the next three will be in San Francisco, even though the Niners are off to a solid start. Mike Singletary is doing good things in the Bay Area but I still don’t trust Shaun Hill at QB and a weakness like that to exploit (QB) is what the Rams would need to pull off the upset. This may not please a certain segment of the fans, or the Rams’ coaching staff for that matter, but this is a building year and whether these guys win from week to week isn’t what matters. What’s important is that the franchise gets progressively better as the season goes on regardless of what their record is.

How is this news to anyone? You can’t just erase years and years of bad drafts over a one year period. As long as they play hard and improve towards the end of the year, it will be a successful year. Look at Jimmy Johnson’s first year with the Cowboys. It takes time, and at least two more drafts to become a playoff team each year. We finally have football people running the show, give them a chance.

Rams can beat Green Bay if all they have is what they showed against Cincinnati (at home no less). Rams will have a difficult task in winning any road games for a while

My question is, how in the world did the Rams get such a tough schedule for a team that won two games last year? TWO GAMES. And if I’m not mistaken, we had a really tough 2008 schedule because everyone was saying we’d be lucky if pulled off a victory or two in the first eight games. (Sound familiar?) You would think the NFL would want the Rams to win a few games to help stabilize the franchise but then again…maybe they’re still mad that we moved to St. Louis in the first place. Conspiracy theorists unite!

As the cliche goes” games are won in the trenches” and the biggest failing I’ve seen in this team so far is the offensive and defensive lines. Until the Rams are able to push opponents off the line of scrimmage, open consistent holes for Jackson and protect Bulger, this offense will sputter and struggle to put points on the board.

On the defensive line, the problem is worse. When an aging Matt Hasselback and a mediocre Jason Campbell can throw for nearly 300 yds each week, the future looks bleak for the Rams. Can you imagine what Warner and Brees are going to do to the Rams? Little is old, Long is overmatched, Hall is a journeyman and Adeneju (sp?)is inexplicably deactivated each week. The interior of the line isn’t better with a bunch of youngsters and no names.

Is 0-5 likely? I would say it’s almost a certainty.

I watched parts of maybe 30 games this weekend including all of the Rams. The biggest problem I can see is that Bulger is pressured right after the snap, more so than any game that I watched. He has no time whatsoever. Because of this pressure the d-backs are all over our receivers and guys like McMichael & Avery look like drop ball guys. Until we get a group that can offer some pass protection, I say we score 7 points every two games. Alex Barron is useless on many levels. Incognito got beat all day, who cares how mean he is. I just hope we take Tebow with the number one pick. Line him up in the Wildcat offense and see what happens, he can run or he can throw. Don’t even counter with HEY this is pro not college. Did the Dolphins win with it last year? We need to spice things up, but first protect the QB. Why were no balls in the last series thrown to L. Robinson, our best receiver in my opinion? We can beat GB or SF but we need three takaways & 2 defensive scores.

Was anyone else shocked that the offensive drive at the end of the 1st half (the drive after the touchdown), we just ran the ball a few times and went into the locker room content with being up 7-6?!?!? Maybe it wouldn’t have made a difference, but when you’re struggling offensively and you finally get a touchdown, you gotta allow them to try to get into a rhythm. Being content is unacceptable. You gotta capitalize as much as possible (especially when you’ve been struggling and you finally have something positive happen) and it did irk me that Spags just played it cautious and ran the clock out. And actually, I’ve been a big time Bulger critic, but he did alright in the Redskin game and I was impressed he bounced back up after some of those hard hits (if you can show that toughness, add some leadership skills, I might change my mind about ya Marc). I’m by no means giving up on Spags because I think he’ll be a good head coach, but decisions like he did at the end of the first half just can not happen. Those kind of decisions are what separate good coaches and bad coaches. Clean crap like that up, and you’ll be fine. It’s gonna be a rebuilding year, like it or not, and growing pains are apparent. Let’s get a win at home boys!

Kevin Wheeler is right on here!!! The Rams will win a few games as long as they contiue to improve but don’t look for many wins, 3 or 4 at the very most provided they stay healthy.

Cross-Czeh
The NFL schedule is pretty well set year to year. I love a good conspiracy theory as well but other than the NFL starting the Rams with two road games there isn’t one.
As you may or may not know they play each team in their division twice then based on a schedule determined years ago they play on a rotating basis a division from the AFC and a division from the NFC this year we play the AFC South and NFC North so that takes care of 14 games (and the 49ers, Seahawks and Card play that schedule as well) and their are only two games based on how you finished last year and this year that was Washington and I believe New Orleans.
The comments by the “experts” are dead on, football games are won and lost on the line of scrimmage and the Rams at this point have NOTHING on either side of the ball. It’s not like they have not tried they have put a fortune on the line of scrimmage but apparently they can’t evaluate talent.

— 0-16
3:13 pm September 21st, 2009

Thanks, 1-15. I know how the schedule works but my point is that we seem to always be on the road at the beginning of the past few years. (I could be wrong about that). Say you’ve got a crappy team and you play all your road games or tougher opponents at home during the first eight. By the time you reach the second half of your season, your team is demoralized, your coach gets fired, and the defensive coordinator’s daughter gets knocked up. If I’ve seen it once, I’ve seen it a hundred times.

Evaluating talent is a primary concern. I hope the football people will have some influence on draft and personnel decisions.

We have to give both the new staff and the team time to get their synergy built. The Washington loss will smart as it was winnable but this is a re-build year. St. Louis football has had a hangover since the “Greatest show on Turf” and it’s time to realize “it’s over” and start rebuilding a new character.

I hope Spags is the man but he needs time to dismantle the ill-formed collection of players that was trying to keep the glory alive. That may not be popular but change never is. In order for him to make an impact, he needs some time, like the Blues.

Give the Rams some credit, for their market size they have spent some $ on the O-Line. They just have so many holes to fill. It will take at least two more drafts and a few great free agent signings to make them respectable again. 2011 maybe at best.

The trenches! Rookie left tackle Smith was not ready so I look for improvement with Goldberg in there. Baron need to make better reads on blitzes. Former Ram DT Demarco Farr use to talk about hand to hand combat for DL and had a coach that helped the Rams with this tactic dduring the Super Bowl runs. During the preseason I saw Ah You and RRookie Scott use the hand to get free from blockers. The Rams D line needs to get back to that. DT Ramsey looked good. So did Chris Long.

No way on Tim Tebow. I’d be happy with Sam Bradford (injury be damned) and settle for Colt McCoy or Jimmy Claussen (we should be able to snatch one of them in the 2nd round) if someone else steals Bradford.

One of the reasons that Dick Vermeil and Charlie Armey were successful was that they had undrafted free agents in camp every Tuesday, addressing the last weeks weaknesses.

I see Billy Devaney and Steve Spagnuolo bringing in street free agents on Tuesdays, and hopefully, they can find someone hungry enough to make the squad and show the Rams what it is to want to work hard and enjoy something they love doing.

The Rams will never win, living upon the status quo…

I now wish this team drafted a qb, doesnt most new coaches bring a new qb with them during a organization overhall. No disrespect to Marc the rams will not bring him back unless he turns into Joe Montana. So next year we will be working backwards………

I was at the game yesterday and here are some of my observations…

OL - Say what you will about Bulger, but Peyton Manning would not be able to do much better. We have NO PUSH and no protection. And guys, this has nothing to do with draft picks, this has to do with TALENT. Jacob Bell and that other guy from Baltimore–these were high end FA signings and I’m not sure if they’re getting the job done. Jackson did gain 100 but he made most of his yards on one carry in which he single-handedly ran past people around the end.

WR/TE - I’m looking for a politically correct way of saying these guys suck, but I can’t think of any. Seriously…fumbles, dropped balls, running the wrong route…jeepers, it was sad to see.

DL - I recommend we move Long to OLB and forget him on the DL…b/c he does NOTHING. Great guy…but he’s getting slapped around. Seriously slapped around. Little still has a motor but he gets chipped/double teamed a lot. He may be the next LB candidate as well.

Play Calling - Guys, we’re at the 4 yard line and everyone is expecting pass…why not run at least ONCE and go no huddle (do we even have the no huddle?). I realize we had no time outs…but we must gain YARDAGE in order to kick a field goal.

I’m more optimistic about the Rams being competitive now than I was before the Skins game. Bulger actually showed up in game 2. QB play is so important. It seemed to me Bulger was much more alert out there, like he wanted it. If he can maintain that attitude, AND THAT’S A BIG IF, then this team has a chance, especially at home. Avery has to bust loose, both him and Robinson got big play potential. Run more crossing patterns, run some slants, use the tight ends more, run some reverses, go deep, work the screens to Jackson, start playing bold on offense. They’re coming home, and this is where they need to wake up and make it happen. The offensive game planning needs to dummy up and get smart. I don’t know why, but I got hunch they’ll beat the Vikes, but a victory over Green Bay might make things interesting. But this team will not win a game unless it gets bold on offense. You gotta score to win. What else do they got to lose?

0-5, who cares! This is a rebuilding year anyway. If they can put up a solid effort, much like they did on Sunday, I can watch the games through till the end. That was something I could not do much of last year (and man do I pay way to much for the NFL package to watch crappy football). I do not expect playoffs or anything this season anyway. And with the cupboard bare, if we’re going to suck, than suck all the way to the upper end of the draft. Just show improvement and heart, I have faith in the new regime to turn things around. So unlike many “fans” I am not going to micromanage their every move or mistake. I already like the direction Spags & Devaney say they are taking us. Despite record, and major lack of talent on this team, I see progress in the overall effort of the team. (hopefully they can sustain it in the midst of a lot of losing). But I’ll give them the respect to undo the mistakes of the last 7 or 8 years. Ain’t gonna happen in first season. Just keep playing hard & never quit!

— Duane Plank
9:29 pm September 21st, 2009

I can’t believe all the negativity that all of the Ram fans have posted here. The team really did not play badly yesterday. At least they were COMPETITIVE. The problem yesterday was twofold in my opinion and it is only on one side of the ball - the OFFENSE.True with what many have said, our Offensive Line has to improve. They have to give Bulger time to throw the ball/pass protect as well as create holes for Jackson to run through.
But another issue which now concerns me is WR DONNIE AVERY. Its two games in a row now where he has coughed up the football. Yesterday, we could of at least gotten a FG out of that drive that he flopped. It could have changed the game. We could have won it. The DEFENSE played very well. I was impressed on how are defense played. They did not allow the Redskins in the end zone. That speaks volumes compared to last weeks drubbing at Seattle where we lost 0-28, 4 TD’s given up.And the Redskin Offense isn’t a bad offense either.
So to those of you who continue to lambast the team - think POSITIVE! It will take time, take one game at a time, and I think this team can beat Green Bay next week. GO RAMS!

— NY Rams Fan
9:43 pm September 21st, 2009

ok they have only won 5 out of the 34 last games….What would it hurt to let Bulger heal and try Boller at qb. I think that Boller could score 7 points in two games. Yes i know the line is the problem. That even makes this move better, by keeping Bulger out of harms way and Boller can scramble.

What happened to we are going to be a running team?
I havent seen a full backfield that often.

Rest Bulger for a few games…..It s not like they are going to the playoffs. Then let him come back after the line has improved a little.

The pack was beat last week by the Bengal, plus they got problems, might be just what the doctor ordered they got injury problems on the o-line and at saftey, so we certainly could use break out games by the wide outs and the pass rush, and if Avery could contribute something besides holding penalties at the end of long Jackson runs and try ball security would be nice. And please never let him EVER return a kickoff again, even scary when he runs an end around the ball is right their for the plucking, you’d think that in practice he’d learn better ball security by the way OJ swipes at it all the time.

I’m sorry but how does drafting a QB help us now? From what I see our OL will only ruin a young QB, we need a better line, a playmaker at WR and a DT that pressures the QB. Drafting a QB does nothing right now.If the OL was better we would be 1-1 right now. I love my Rams but we are back to being pathetic just like the early to late 90’s, until #28 came to the Rams and a little know QB named Warner.

— Pete
3:16 pm September 22nd, 2009

A young QB isn’t what is gonna turn this team around any time soon, but you guys started the draft talk already so lets go with the DT from Nebraska Suh abig stud in the middle of the line and hopefully someday Carriker can make a play or two, gotta get some major free agents but the way Bulger has no time no QB can play in this system so we should stick with him and get him some help.

Arguably the Rams have the best punter in the NFL.The “Wildcat” is showing success in some areas even though it is an old concept. The Rams should experiment with an old concept of punting out of bounds every time. Sacrifice the few lost yards but eliminate returns completely. A punter who averaged 50 yds last season is ideal for the experiment……….

— Jack Reynolds
6:39 pm September 22nd, 2009

0-16, we get zero pressure from our front four and have a DC who has about as much balls as a Catholic School Girl. Considering our offense can’t seems to move the ball or gets bogged down by stupid penalites if it does, we really need some short fields and this non-pressure defense designed by Ken Flajole just isn’t getting that done. Bend, but don’t break works if you have the Greatest Show on Turf behind you- not if you have an offense that has scored 7 pts in 2 games. I know people are high on the defense, but wait until we play some good offenses.

Obviously, the showing against the Redskins has gotten a lot of people activated. Look at all the comment on this site. And little wonder! We were one fumbled pass away from walking away winners against a very good football team. Our running attack suffered from a bad case of Albert Haynesworth disease. Our receivers were unreliable except for Laurent Robinson. No wonder the management made a move on a new receiver. I think they are looking long term to have someone to stand in for what is obviously an ego-ridden young man (Avery) who has heard too much praise for his performance last year, and has let it go to his head. Unfortunately a problem now rather than a solution. Another sad story! On both sides of the ball, the Redskins were a big challenge for a team just starting to get their act together. As of the Redskins game, we were still un-coordinated. Bulger had insufficient time in many instances. Against a less physical team than the Redskins, it could be we show him better protection. With more protection and less Haynesworth, our offense could begin to click. In any event, this looks to be a year to patch together a football team worthy of the name. I’m sorry for Stanley, but if his leaving gives us a better chance, well that’s football! Defensively, we stiffened and held them out when we had to, but gave up too much yardage in the middle of the field. However, hgolding the Redskins to three field goals is a major improvement. As one of their cornerbacks said after the game, this team (the Rams) did not look like the (losers) we saw playing the Seahawks. I for one am vastly encouraged with this showing.
