What would Rams look like with Boller at QB?

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: Assuming Marc Bulger’s injury keeps him out at least a game or two, how do you think Kyle Boller will impact how the Rams approach things on offense?

JIM THOMAS
Because of his arm strength, the Rams could take more deep shots and/or try more deep shots with Boller at quarterback. And because of his foot speed, you could see more rollouts or passes with him on the move. But where he goes with the ball may be influenced just as much by who’s out there at wide receiver, particularly if Laurent Robinson misses a couple of weeks with his ankle injury.

BILL COATS
I don’t think the Rams’ offensive scheme will shift much, if any, with Boller at QB instead of Bulger. The coaches might design some ways to take advantage of Boller’s mobility, but there won’t be any wholesale changes in their offensive philosophy.

JEFF GORDON
Boller has so much more mobility than Bulger. If the Rams are smart, they will use lots of rollouts and bootlegs with him. He is not a terribly accurate pocket passer, so the game planning and play calling must reflect that. For examples of how to use quarterback mobility, the Rams staff can refer to Sunday’s game video and watch what Green Bay did with Aaron Rodgers.

KEVIN WHEELER
(Host of “Sports Open Line” on KMOX)
Boller’s mobility would allow the team to move him around more than they do with Bulger but I don’t think it changes very much. Boller has a stronger arm and is a better athlete than Bulger but he’s also less accurate and, until yesterday, he hadn’t taken the field in an NFL regular season game since Baltimore’s 14th game of 2007. The primary problems remain the same, regardless of who is taking the snaps. The offensive line isn’t protecting well enough and there just isn’t enough consistency from the receiving corps. A change in QB, whether by choice or circumstance, isn’t going to make much difference.

Boller is better than Bulger. Bulger doesn’t want to play he was looking for the sideline after that routine hit. He hasn’t wanted to play for 2 or 3 seasons now. Go with Boller whos fighting for his career. May be the OC wiill open it up a little bit. The OC is real suspect right now.

Wheeler got it right. I just doesn’t matter

Doesn’t matter? Of course, it matters. Boller proved the team can score points…17 points in 11 minutes after Bulger led the team to 7 points in 2.25 GAMES. Same O-line. Actually, less of an O-line with the injuries. The fact that the Bulger led offense gave Green Bay the ball IN THE RED ZONE for their first three possessions is the difference in the game. May not make a difference in wins and losses but it will certainly make a difference in competitiveness and allowing the young players to progress without wondering if your QB is up to the task. A young QB will bring everything along much smoother than some overpaid QB that is not used to “rebuilding.” Bulger came in with Warner’s GSOT. Now he can’t handle the adversity…hasn’t been able to in years. So, please doesn’t make a difference is nonsense.

I didn’t expect the Bulger/Boller debate until the Bye Week. Truth is I’ve never been a fan of Marc’s play, but I think Boller proved two big points: 1) A little bit of spark can do this team a lot of good if it can continue. 2) Even though Kyle’s performance was not great, we received similiar stats at a small percentage of the cost - oh, and did I mentioned he actually got the ball into the endzone! We’ve heard the FO wants to stick by their man, but at this point, seeing more of Boller and Knoll will go a long way with Rams fans. I’m just saying!

You have no idea what a popular QB Marc Bulger is — in Seattle.

I attended the season opener, and the bars were abuzz about how great it was to play against him. The people out there hope #10 is running the Rams “offense” from now on out.

Of course, they’re right — the Rams are dead with Bulger back there, and there aren’t enough offensive linemen in the NFL to make up for his negatives.

Boller should start the rest of this year, with Null coming in after the games are hopelessly lost. The good news is that next year’s draft crop of QBs looks pretty strong.

The Rams are funny. They can continue to do things that are obviouly wrong to the rest of the world. Its painfully obvious Bulger is the worst stating QB in the leaque yet they continue to roll him out there because he makes 7 million a year. Bulger has made it obvious by his play and demeanor he doesn’t want to be out there. Go with the young guy. The Rams are the masters of the miscast. They run the west coast offense which features short possesion passes yet they start 2 receivers who can’t take hits after catching the ball, Avery and Rbinson are more effective on deep routes. The Rams have a leaky offensive line yet they play the less mobile QB. Take a realistic look at it Rams and get it together.

@Jim Thomas:

Deep shots? To which receiver?

Hard to look to the draft for salvation. Devaney has proven to be even less of a gm than the last one. Passing up on Deshean Jackson for Donnie Avery is one thing, but passing up on Mark Sanchez for … Jason Smith? That is a “Ryan Leaf instead of Peyton Manning” moment. And to start your GM tenure with that glaring mistake. They will just pick yet another overweight lineman project to protect Bulger. Oh, that just sounds horribly true.

If anybody is awake out there at Rams Park (which I think they are), Marc Bulger has played his last game as a Ram.

Nevermind, I didn’t really read the second half of your post.

Regardless, it amazed me that Jackson got as much on the ground as he did without some receivers that can back the safeties up a little. What a waste of talent he is on this team right now.

LARambunctous29 that is a ridiculous statement. Bulger dosen’t want to play? How do you know did he tell you that? You are a idiot. And the rest of you who think Boller is better get a clue. Boller is a CAREER BACKUP and 1st ROUND DRAFT BUST. Why the hell do think the Ravens got rid of him? Because he isn’t any good thats why.

at this point, who cares. ill be the quarterback. they should raffle off the positions on the team to people in st. louis. hell, let the cardinals play as the rams for a game, we might win.

rams1328: Because the Ravens found themselves a hell of a franchise QB in Joe Flacco. Thats why. Marc Bulger has sucked for a long time now. If we could afford to cut him we would. Tell me this, if Bulger is any good why did we sign Boller, draft Null, and are looking at a high first round QB pick next year?

“rams1328″ sounds like a real diehard Seahawks fan — just the kind of people I met out there who love Marc Bulger.

Like i said before the 1st game at Seattle….START BOLLER!!! Bulger didn’t really do anything in the preseason…out 2-3 weeks before starting in Seattle?…DUH!!! common sense they should have gone with Boller. Bulger did ooookkkkaaaayy……..but there was more spark with Boller! no matter how much an average QB he is! reminds me of an off balnced Jeff Garcia….who I PERSONALLY would have chosen! i keep trying to have faith in this team…and it looked good for a little while vs. Green Bay…but c’mon…same old sorry a** Rams! and that hurt for me to write! i love my team..but this year is going nowhere really fast! c’mon guyz…prove me WRONG! I WANNA BE WRONG! DAMMIT! (really upset, dissapointed, loyal ram fan since 1967!)

Boller isn’t going to make any difference, it’s still a bad team

It all comes down to a very easy evaluation, how many games have the Rams won in the past 2 years? The good people covering the Rams have noted it in almost every story since the end of last season, it is almost part of the team name.
Since the NFL is the ultimate “What have you done for me lately” league, Marc has had his turn. The team at least moves when Kyle is under center. As Bernnie pointed out in his article, the point is moot beyond the end of this season, neither is the long-term solution. But I know I am at the point of “Do something even if it is wrong, but just do something.”

I will say this about Boller…He does feel the pressure and get rid of the ball…I’ve maintained this year all year that Bulger is simply not pulling the trigger fast enough. Yes…the OL needs work, but no OL can let the QB hold the ball forever.

Anyone who says Boller is better than Bulger needs to grow up, how can you even compare the two? I can’t take anyone seriously as a football fan that honestly thinks Kyle Boller is a good QB, if you think that, stop watching football please.

Devaney is 0 for 3 in evaluating QB’s. He picked Leaf, passed on Ryan and now Sanchez. Bighorn is right. Schlereth is right. This team continues to sign and draft players and plays them out-of-position or in the wrong scheme. Like the old Who song, “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.”

Boller got benched in Baltimore for every retread they could find. Boller got beched for Tony Banks for crying out loud!!! It had nothing to do with getting a franchise QB. He got injured in preseason last year and that the only reason Flacco started. The cluelessness some of you have is amazing. Bluger doesn’t want to play? Looking for an excuse out? He tore his rotator cuff you moron!! Boller is horrible, he will prove he is horrible. His mobility might benefit the Rams occasionally but he is horrible and we may not win a game all year.

Here is a question. “If the salary cap was not an issue, what team would trade their starting quarterback even up for Bulger?”

I can’t think of any. Not Denver with Orton, not Oakland with Russell. Maybe Tampa with whoever they have. That is it.

Now, how many teams would trade their 2nd string QB (again if no salary cap issue) for Bulger? I bet half the teams would NOT….

The Rams have to be smart on how they use Boller because if they have him running all over the place and he gets planted by a D-Lineman then we are down to a Rookie QB.

I am a little confused. What does Boller’s arm strength have to do with anything when you are playing in a west coast offense? Boller is no where near as accurate as a passer as Bulger. You may not se as many sacks with Boller, but you will see a lot of INT’s with him. I think Bulger is shell shocked and on the verge of being damaged goods, that being said, I still think Bulger is the best QB that the Rams have. Some say with a dismal season on the horizon, you might as well put in Null and try to groom him. The problem with that, is that this team is so bad, he will probably end up getting ruined before he finishes the season. I am in favor of playing Boller until Bulger is 100% healthy, but after this season, draft a qb.

I see ALOT of Rams fans complaining that Kyle Boller is not the answer!!!!,of course NOT!!!!,BUT at least he has some guts to:run when in trouble,(and not stay in the pocket and do NOTHING!!!at all(like Bulger). You fans do see that????????,I know probably Kyle Boller is not that much better than Bulger,BUT at least he puts some points on the board for us!!!!!,instead of always losing:28-0,or scoring min.points,in our so-called PROFESSIONAL football games????.At least I can get a little excited seeing our team score more than,3,or 7 points max????in a complete game???i’d rather see a score of:24-17,or 31-17 examples only.Compared to having Bulger in there, scoring always FG’s,what good is he,if he can march us down the field, get into the red-zone and then fail to score a TD(yeah he got 1 in Wash.but to me he CHOKES alot, give Kyle a try for now, bench Bulger for now,at least we will score some points!!!.Though I’d rather win the game(s),but we will not w/him in there!!!!.He is over-paid!!!!,he should give back some of his money he has tried to earn, which he has not.

Kevin Wheeler is way off. Boller is a definite upgrade at QB for a team in dire need of new leadership. I’m not advocating Boller is the answer for this franchise, but at the same time, I don’t like automatically knocking someone down until they’re given a chance. Boller’s a former number 1 draft choice, he’s got close to 3 years starting experience (42 games), he’s at the point in his career right now that will determine what direction his career will take. Either he’ll be a starter or a backup from here on out in his career. It’s not like this guy is Dan McGwire and is a complete bust. I want to see what this guys got. That was impressive what he did in the first half coming off the bench. I hate it when people automatically label someone. Remember when Mike Martz liked Boller in the draft. I wonder how the perception of Boller would be if he got to run the Rams offense in St. Louis during 2004 thru 2006 when the offense was still very good. Don’t you think Bollers career would of gotten off to a good start? And where would Bulger be today if he started his career out as a Raven? Would he have the money he has today. Highly doubtful. I was all high and mighty for the Rams to draft a QB last year, and I still am. But I’d like to see what Bollers got before jumping to conclusions about him, and after the Rams draft their QB in the first round next year, they will still need a veteran QB on the team, so you never know, Boller could be that guy. Let’s give the guy a shot and let him play. This guys career is at the crossroads, he’s got to prove himself, and when you got a guy on your team in that predicament with talent, I want to see what he’s got. This is Spags first test of credibility, if he goes back to Bulger this year then I give up.
