Can Bulger rediscover his touch?

  • Email this
  • Print this

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: Given time in the pocket, do you think Marc Bulger is capable of rediscovering the accuracy that marked his play earlier in his career?

BERNIE MIKLASZ
When Bulger was at his best, 2006, he was throwing to Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce and Kevin Curtis. And Steven Jackson was having a career year in the backfield. The last time the Rams won a playoff game, 2004, Bulger not only had Holt, Bruce and Jackson, but Marshall Faulk also contributed 1,000+ yards from scrimmage (rushing and receiving). If the quality around Bulger is above-average, he can be an efficient quarterback. And there’s no doubt his completion percentage would go up. But he’s not the type of QB who can elevate a team. He needs the cast around him.

JIM THOMAS
Sure. But it pays to have receivers that can consistently gain separation and get open. And that obviously hasn’t always been the case this season with a young, unproven receiving corps.

BILL COATS
He’s very accurate in practice, when pressure isn’t being applied. So, you’d have to assume that he could be accurate on Sundays if protected. It also would help him if the Rams had a more formidable stable of receivers.

JEFF GORDON
Accuracy from the pocket will not be a problem for Marc IF the Rams protect him. He will make some nice throws. But will the offensive game plan allow him to attack opponents with those mid-range passes he can hit all day? Also, will his lack of mobility prevent him from succeeding on the roll-out and bootleg passes that Kyle Boller throws so well? Those questions will remain even if the offensive line can build a sturdy pocket for him.

KATHLEEN NELSON
Time in the pocket isn’t enough to revive the passing game. The Rams need reliable receivers as well as improved pass protection.

KEVIN WHEELER (Host of “Sports Open Line” on KMOX)
I suppose it’s possible but a lot of that accuracy early in his career was the product of having top-shelf receivers. Those guys caught everything they were supposed to and then caught some more just for good measure. More time to see a play develop is always going to help but having proven, Pro Bowl caliber receivers like Holt and Bruce had as much to do with those high completion percentages as the amount of time Bulger had to throw the ball. More time to throw would benefit Bulger, no doubt, but more time and more talent at wide receiver would be the only way to do a true comparison between Bulger now and Bulger back then.

I think we should take a cue from miami and run the wildcat…have 2 tight ends, with SJ, Gado and or the fullback in the backfield we have a chance at moving the ball while avoiding sacks and penaties. Go Lambs! or assume the fetal position and wait until we can draft Bradford?

This is a retarded question because it makes an assumption that has no chance of reality. The reason the team has been able to move early in the games up to this point is that Boller is able to escape the pressure. Without that ability, Bulger can’t be effective for the Rams.

I can’t recall too many QB’s that were able to elevate a team without having a great supporting cast. Marino, Elway, Farve, maybe? When you start looking around at other greats such as Aikmen, Montana and Kelly you realize these guys had great teams around them. Take these guys out of their winning organizations and they become pretty average. Montana didn’t fare so well in Kansas City, did he? And Aikmen looked pretty average in Dallas his last few years as his supporting cast began to fade away. Everyone tends to remember these greats when they had a Hall of Fame cast surrounding them.

Look, I’m not saying Bulger is like one of these guys, but, a good QB can elevate his game when surrounded by talent. I think Marc is a good NFL QB. Nobody in their right mind is claimng the Rams have adequate talent to support Bulger. Can Bulger regain his form? I don’t know, but I do know he would have a better chance if he received the kind of protection he received in the past and had quality receivers.

Accurate or not…Bulger is not nor has he ever been a leader. When if ever did or has Bulger taken a team from his own 20 into the endzone in the last two minutes to win or tie a game? Rarely if ever….the guy just is not the guy that will lead his team to victory.

Some have commented that even Peyton Manning would have no success behind the Rams O-line and with its receivers, so how could Bulger be faulted. All you have to do is watch one of Peyton’s games and you would know the difference. Bernie nails it when he says about Bulger, “… he’s not the type of QB who can elevate a team.” Peyton is that type. Bulger needs most of the stars aligned before he can succeed. The “cast around him” elevates Bulger, not the other way around.

The only thing Bulger elevates is his BANKBOOK and my BLOOD pressure.

How many chances does this millionare need ? Does he really need everything in place to succeed ?

Didn’t the Rams pay him the BIG Bucaroos to infact elevate this team ? …. If not, WHY did they pay him …..well…… what the….. ah I give up, whats the use !!

Wildcat with our team??? Do you see anyone close to Ronnie Brown on this team? Dumb idea.

Was Bulger paid to elevate this team? No he was paid for what he did in the past JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE. The way the contracts are set up it’s not about what they are going to do it is about what they have done. Change EVERYONE to a one year deal and that could make a difference in performance but it wil never happen.

Jasckson is no Marshall Faulk and as for the receivers on this team, they could all be replaced my the Mizzou receivers and there would be little to no difference. If you can’t run the right routes and get seperation there is no passing game.

Kurt Warner (Nothin more to be said)
Ben Rothlesburger (Thank God he had a defense his first 4 seasons, including the Seattle Superbowl)
Tom Brady (Under pressure he plays like the 6th round player he is. Bulger was a 6th rounder)
Donavan McNabb (Up and down, when his D and offensive line struggled.)

John Elways, Brett Favre and those who succeeded year in and out over rebuilding teams are rare.

Thank you Jim, Bill, and Kathleen. It’s amazing how Bernie and Jeff just sheep their way though questions. Another example of how they just try to appease the Rams Fans. Maybe they will come up with something orginal … not. Anway, elevating teams at the QB position? Funny. What a joke. Bahh…bahhh …
As for Elway, he had a pretty good cast around him. He didn’t elevate anything in the last SB he won. He was a Trent Dilfer all the way that year. A bad O-line and no recievers getting consistant seperation …hmm … maybe Bernie can go try to elevate that. What a clown.

Throws so well, like that roll-out pick-6 against the 49ers? :) It’s a moot point, neither Bulger or Boller is likely to be here next year. Either Null, some 1st round draft pick, or another young QB will be under center next year.

This will make three off years in a row for Bulger. Funny it started when he signed the big contract he deserved. This will be his last year with the Rams. Too bad he is past his prime at such a young age. An oft injured Bulger just shows how unbelievable Farve is!

Note: Singletary’s big mistake getting rid of Martz!

There are lots of quarterbacks who have made their teams better. Happens every year. Is happening again this year. I wouldn’t expect the bizarro cult of Bulger fans to understand that. These wack jobs act as if the QB position is irrelevant. Sure it is. That’s why they’re paid millions of dollars; it’s a meaningless position, right?

— Bernie Miklasz
2:47 pm October 14th, 2009

Bulger isn’t athletic enough to compete in the league today. He’s never been a mobile QB. It’s time to turn the page. The Rams paseed on many QBs that could’ve made the team better because they were worried that if they drafted a QB that it would mess with MBs head.

Either pick up someone that can move in the pocket or get some slashers and go wildcat.

— Majicman
2:50 pm October 14th, 2009

Let me clear up one falsehood that’s been stated here… someone actually dimissed Elway in 1998 as a “Trent Dilfer” type? Wow. Amazing. In 1998, Elway was 5th in the NFL in passer rating (93.0) and had 22 TDs and 10 INTs. In 2000 when Dilfer was the starting QB for the champion Ravens, he was the league’s 20th rated QB (76.6) and had 12 TDs and 11 INTs.

Not even close. Elway made a positive difference for the ‘98 Broncos.

Teams that win, not just the SB but win and compete game to game have to have a QB that either MAKES the team competitive or keeps them there.
Bulger is not that type of a QB he is a maintenance guy IF the rest of the team is good, he will be OK but only OK.
On bad teams a truly good QB goes out and MAKES the team stay in there and become competitive. Look at the team as it is NOW. This team is not competitive. Look at the scores, the drives. When have you seen MB ever take over a drive in the last 3 years? Forget all the excuses, he does not have “it”
This team needs to look to next year, draft a QB with talent, true talent and move on. Till then, it will be a series of 35 to 10 games on the loss side.
Last add.. since the QB lacks this ability, where is Spags commitment to the run?

Do the Rams base their salary payment scales on practice heros or guys that actually have a pair and can win a few under the heat ?

This just proves my point!!!! Marc Bulger is a system QB. You take a mediocre QB, put him in with super talented & experienced WR’s, and his numbers get super inflated. Take away the WR vacuum cleaners, and all you have left, is the mediocre QB posing as a $26 million dollar guaranteed flop. Marc Bulger is a pretender. He has no desire to attack in the first three quarters, inorder to build up that huge lead (like Warner did). He wants to be known as the “comeback” kid.
Marc Bulger got a pro bowl MVP award, because they don’t have a pass rush or allow blitzes. Giving Bulger a full 8 seconds to pass away with impunity, makes him look better, than he really is.
I wish Bulger had won the playoff game, they lost to Carolina. That would have been way better than a crummy pro bowl win. Bulger had zero TD passes in that Carolina loss and that game meant something to St Louis & it’s fans. Oh, and didn’t a Bulger led Rams team get shellacked by Atlanta 48-10 in another playoff game loss. It’s time to ditch this pretender.

5:34 pm October 14th, 2009

I used to be a supporter of Bulger. He did enjoy a great supporting cast before. Now, he has nothing but Jackson. I think he’s become shell shocked by all the sacks and always looking for a place to land. He has little or no blocking. He’s too quiet and unassuming to be a leader. He has no mobility, but if the line could create a nice pocket with time, I believe he’s still accurate in those ideal conditions. I think much of this team has mentally already moved beyond this year. They know we will upgrade the talent level and most of them won’t be here. Devaney better be the hardest working guy at Rams park. It’s his performance that I’m looking to.

Bulger had good success under Mike Martz, bring Martz back as OC, with Coach Spags defense we could be right back among the NFL’s elite!!! Oh yeah…maybe the special teams coach from the Bears also because it seems that whoever is back there returning kicks takes it all the way.

— EternalRam
5:48 pm October 14th, 2009

As stated by some of the contributors and other posts, Bulger was good because the team around him and the system were good, plain and simple. Put any QB in the league during those glory days on the Rams and they could of done the same thing. That said, put any QB in the league now onto the Rams and in my opinion you won’t see much of a difference. Could QBs like Peyton or Brady eek out a win or 2 with our Rams based soley on their ability and leadership, most likely, but I wouldn’t bet on more than that. The team itself is horrible. We all know the talent issues, not only in the skilled positions, but with the team as a whole. It is just horible and until that issue is corrected we won’t be seeing a winning team here under any QB.

— zebber

Bottom line : Marc earned his contract when Mike Martz was here.He hasn’t operated with a qualified OC since Mad Mike left. The Mike Martz curse will continue until he is brought back.

Hey ronjon, you have a vivid memory. I checked box scores from 2002 thru 2006 when Bulger had 36 of his career victories. Of those 36, only 9 were where the Rams scored last in the 4th quarter (not possible to determine if it was within the last two minutes). Didn’t bother to check further since he has only had 4 wins since 2006. Perhaps you should apologize to steve?

What a hilarious statement about Elway. Elway didn’t elevate the Broncos in 98? Ha, what did Griese do with the Broncos in 99? Yeah, I can just see Bulger running and making that plunge into the end zone like John did in the Super Bowl. Insane comments here. The QB is the personality of the team. Favre played in Green Bay for 16 years and the Packers had only 1 losing season during his time. Last year Green Bay goes 6-10. Heck, look at Carson Palmer, his first 4 years in Cincy, they win a division and go 500 or better in all 4 years as a starter. The last 2 years Carson is hurt, the Bengals are horrible. Now Cincy is pulling off last minute victories and are 1 play away from being 5-0. QB play is so hugh. Heck back in 87 and 88 Gene Stallings had the Cardinals headed in the right direction contending for playoff berths but then Lomax had that arthritic hip, was forced to retire, and Gene was fired within 2 years—-because he didn’t have a quarterback. I could go on and on about this. Rams need a QB that can lead, a QB that exudes confidence, a QB that excels when the pressure builds, and we have never seen that in Marc. Those great Ram offenses in the past were good enough to win 9 or 10 games a year, especially in a weak division like the NFC West has routinely been over the years. A high caliber QB would of capitalized with that kind of offensive talent and brought some excitement here. Instead we got nothing and we still don’t have anything. Time for Devaney to dummy up.

Stay focused Ram Nation! Mike Martz is sitting behind a desk at NFL Network when he could be dialing up 30 and 40 yard pass plays and keeping opposing defenses on there heels for our Rams! I LOVE the Rams, plain and simple Marc Bulger was rated as having a quicker release than Kurt Warner and Dan Marino the problem is the decision making doesn’t seem to be there now. Bring Martz back as OC, get Terrell Owens to draw double team and he is still a deep threat to back defenders out of the box and give our best player Steven Jackson some daylight. Please, please, please! Someone that make decisions for our Rams if you could do those two things (Martz and T.O.) everything could be fine THIS YEAR!!!!! I’m a Ram for life and I need to get back into the conversation of discussing football at the barbershop. Someone get me back in the game…I really miss bragging about what we will do to other teams on Sunday’s!

There are only three things Bulger has to fix… On short passing routes he has to throw the ball so the receiver can keep running (not aiming at the receivers back hip). On long routes, he has to improve his arm strength to be able to throw it 30 or more yards. And in the pocket, he has to learn to fall better so he won’t get hurt when his immobility causes another sack. Oh yeah, I forgot a fourth. He needs to learn to lead his team to make them want to play better. I figure, in about 10 years, he may be able to fix those things. Bulger is not an effective QB and never will be.

Remember last week against a good defense, the Rams had over 400 yards of offense. Against a crappy defense of Jacksonville, the Rams will have less than 250 yards because Bulger is “leading” them. Write it down, less than 250…unless Steven Jackson has two long 80 yard runs for TDs.
