Keys to the Rams picking up their first win

  • Email this

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: Many feel this Sunday’s game vs. Detroit is the Rams best chance of a victory this season. That said, if the Rams are to win, what are the keys to victory Sunday?

JIM THOMAS
The Lions have one of the worst pass defenses known to man. Some way, some how, the Rams’ receiver corps — yes, the Rams’ receiver corps — must exploit this weakness. Mr. Avery, here’s your chance for a breakout Sunday.

BILL COATS
If Calvin Johnson is in the lineup, the Lions are dangerous in the passing game. So, it’s essential that the Rams find a way to get some pressure on the quarterback. Offensively, the Rams should be able to move the ball against a medicore defense. They need to finish drives in the end zone instead of settling for field goals or, even worse, committing critical turnovers.

JEFF GORDON
Even with the loss of cornerback Bradley Fletcher, the Rams have enough defense to win this game. But . . . the Rams absolutely, positively have to ATTACK THE LIONS DOWN THE FIELD. If they come out firing and keep firing, they can create room for Steven Jackson. And they will actually score touchdowns! Of course, Marc Bulger can’t throw pick sixes while attacking the Lions. That would not be good.

KATHLEEN NELSON
The passing game needs to get going. Donnie Avery needs to shake off his injury assortment and catch a couple passes. Marc Bulger needs to regain his accuracy. A better passing game should open up the running game for Steven Jackson. On defense, someone needs a game-changing takeaway. The defense needs to muster more effective pressure on the QB. Chris Long would quiet his critics by doing the big, visible, obvious things in a big, visible, obvious way. Maybe a sack or two.

Chris either doesnt want it bad enough, shame on him and Howie or he isnt good enough shame on the Rams for picking him 2nd overall

“The Lions have one of the worst pass defenses known to man.”

And the Rams have one of the worst pass offenses in the galaxy. Should be an “interesting” matchup…

Another thought-provoking statement from Kathleen Nelson….Did you get your education from a box of Cracker Jacks? Because what you write stinks like a hog farm on a hot, humid day. You and Burwell must have taken that Rocco School of Journalism course of the web. Burwell tries to use every word in the English language in every article he writes, even if it doesn’t make any sense, and you ma’am must have use the Cliff Notes version of what happened at a sporting event and try to write about it. tou might do a better job of writing about garage sales or the obits. Here’s a headline for you: “Wife finds husband dead in bed, must have died in his sleep.”

One can only wonder if the PD sportswriters really know what they are seeing…regarding Chris Long…even on TV one can see that he is at least a full second maybe longer off the snap count…by the time he moves, he is being handled easily by the O-Line of the other team…when he ‘rushes’ it’s because the other team has let him run in the middle of the field, as he watches helplessly as the running back goes to–guess where? His abandoned position…as for Bulger…announcers on tv said, Bulger trudges back on the field…truer words were never spoken…He has no spark, let alone any fire…and Baron must have been the dumbest kid in school…he can’t line up onside, and he is still, after all these years, picking up false starts…
It’s time for some honest reporting…rather than this water cooler talk…we are getting from the PD….

Game plan for the Lions. Spazz will surely flub that up. Bulger will be inept and uninspiring. Jackson will have 200 yards and no TD’s. Bad coach, bad GM, bad QB. Witherspoon showed on Monday night just how much talent the Rams are throwing away. Devaney is in St. Loo to destroy the team not rebuild it. The Rosenblooms should be ashamed of themselves. Even Georgia had more sense than these clowns…and Carroll must be turning in his grave with what has happened to a once proud franchise.

Kathleen Nelson is a woman and therefore I will criticize everything she writes about sports. Bryan Burwell is African American so I will criticize everything he writes because even though I don’t realize it, deep down, I’m a racist.

This Rams team is as bad as any Team in League history. They are as bad as the old expansion Tampa Bay Bucs coached by lengendary U.S.C. coach, John McKay. Once he was asked by a reporter,”What about your team’s execution, he replied, “I am for it”?
This team has no chance of beating the Lions or anyone else in this League.
Anyone can see that Bulger is lost and disinterested, no te, weak receiving corps, no DB’s, and very quesyionable coaching everywhere!
0-16 coming up!

I’ll keep saying it until they prove me wrong. This team is going 0-16. Plain and simple they don’t have the players or coaching creativity to win NFL games. 5-34 their last 39 games is horrid!!! Call it what you want, but this team needs to be blown up and started over from scratch. If anyone thinks Donnie Avery at 5′11″ and 180 is going to survive in this league, think again. Get used to the injuries every year from him. Nothing will change until the drafting improves. Detroit 31-30. I’ll go out on a limb and predict a new way for the Rams to lose. Josh Brown lines up for a 35 yard field goal and our new long snapper screws it up. They’ve exhausted every other way to lose a game.

I agree that some of the shots at Brian Burwell are overly acidic, but come on. He’s usually uninteresting, long-winded, and boring. Don’t put race into it.
I don’t know Kathleen Nelson, but you can tell that most women covering football have been coached on what to talk about and what words to use. Don’t put gender into it.
I don’t mind that they offer their thoughts but I take them for what they are.

The Rams couldn’t beat a drum. Bulger should be ashamed to cash those big cheques. Star money for chump play.

0-16 come to PAPA.

Marc Bulger….. you are the weakest link, Buh Buye after this year clown.

The keys to victory as always is TO SCORE MORE POINTS THAN THE OPPOSITION…or do “big, visible, obvious things in a big, visible, obvious way.” That would be option #2. Great insight.

The good news is the Lions will not be available for the second half of the double header game. Please tell me we won’t have to watch the Raiders, Bucs or Titans for the other game this week.

Have we considered playing Bulger on first down, Boller on second down and Null on third downs? Would be similar to our tackle rotation of last week.

We still need to run the ball, but I agree there should be passes down field. This may work better on first or second down when they might not be prepared.

Just FYI Detroit’s defense is available in most fantasy leagues if your regular D (ie: Pittsburgh) has a bye.

3:43 pm October 28th, 2009

If Bartell is on Calvin Johnson, he’s gonna have to step up, or Johnson will eat him alive. If they somewhat limit him, I think the Rams have a chance. I agree with most that they need to take some shots down the field, and CATCH the ball - this will force them to respect the pass allowing the Predator (Jackson) to run wild. It happens this week - Rams 24, Lions 20.

Honest comments today; I have been a loyal fan for many years and I am embarassed with the team on the field. Marc Bulger has checked out and our secondary is small and weak! There is no team emotion and the sad part is I don”t see it coming any time soon. With that I blame the Coaching staff

Dear Son (alias DumbWhiteGuy);

I am so proud of you for your growing insight and stable character. I still do not know why you want to post here where so many children play with their doodle, can’t think straight and scream for their bottle and diapers changed constantly, drooling for attention.

Also, remember what I taught about the “Monkey Bar” when you were in the 3rd grade….. swing out as far as you can, float in space past as many monkey bars as possible before you grab a bar to prevent falling. The further you fly in the void the more your life will be enriched.

I think my work is done.

Did it ever occur to you unbelievers about my son Chris, that I am a better judge about him than anyone, I know my DE stuff son. I was All Pro…what the @#%^&* you guys ever accomplish????

There is more to being a great DE than pass rushing, though that’s important too. But stopping the run is a DE’s first duty and protecting his area. Sacks are nice but there are 6 other guys supposing to be rushing the passer too.

I told Chris all about this..to hold off trying to impress the fans, the press or the other team. Just become like the wall of East Germany, steel and concrete. When I’m ready, I will turn him loose on the yada baba-big pass rushes, just to hear you all screan (at another guy).

I am afraid it will be 0-8 with Marc at the helm. Unless the coach, as queer as he is on Bulger, is willing to put in Boller (whom I know is not a long-term answer…but at least he can throw long AND move in the pocket), the Rams will get about 150 yards passing, and lose the game 17-10 (Jackson gets his first TD) and Spags will say “we stayed close and could have won it except for one or two plays”. “Marc” my words (pun intended), the Rams will get very little passing offense and the Lions will get their 2nd win. Spags will be a decent coach, but right now, he has no cajones.

To those of you who agreed with the DumbWhiteGuy just shows the lack of intelligence of those who post here. Sorry Bernie, but I was disappointed you would agree with this person. If you took a closer look at the other reporters/columnists who put in their 2-cents about what it will take for the Rams to win this Sunday, you will see they are more specific than Ms. Nelson. Bill Coats states the Rams must pressure the QB if Calvin Johnson is in the line-up, also to put the ball in the endzone with out coughing the ball up or settling for a FG. Jeff tells us that even with a shortage in the secondary, the defense should be able to slowdown Detroit’s offense. Also, he says they keep attacking their defense with the pass in order to open up the running game, and for Bulger not to throw INT’s.

Now this tells me what they think what it takes to get a win, not the generalizations written by Ms. Nelson. She doesn’t really say how the Rams need to get the passing game going. If it’s having Avery catch 2 passes, that’s really moving an offense. This sentence written by her, “Chris Long would quiet his critics by doing the big, visible, obvious things in a big, visible, obvious way,” makes no sense what-so-ever. Evidently the 5 W’s and H were not observed in her writing: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How.

Now if some one can prove me wrong, be my guest….

what is wrong with u people? i read down all the comments and almost all of them were “we r going 0-16!! we suck” i will agree, the rams do suck this year, but how do u think the rams will lose this week? the lions won’t have calvin johnson and stafford will be playing hurt and may not play at all. even if stafford plays, without the only player on their team calvin johnson out, they wont win. its like if we didn’t have jackson for a week, we wouldnt survive. have some faith ppl… i cant wait to see what u all say when we beat the lions on sunday… it’ll be interesting…

Still have a hard time envisioning a Rams victory. Just so many bad games. I can envision this, however: The loser of this game is going to be the absolute laughing stock of the league. Of course, the winner of this Toilet Bowl shouldn’t celebrate too much either.

In either case, the league should collect all the tapes of this game and burn them so there’s no record of the game.

(Ok, I’m off my meds.)

This game presents a massive opportunity for the Rams. Preparation and focus are invaluable factors for any WIN - the fans need this W as much as the Rams team. Wishing to be “Mr. Optimistic”, I really hope Marc gets a whole lot smarter with managing the football (INTs, fumbles, pick sixes, etc.). Let’s go D - SMOKE those Lions!!! Get that pressure up and keep it up for ALL four quarters.

FlyinHigh’s Brother, the question posed in this article was, what are the keys to victory Sunday? The question in and of itself left open a broad range of possibilities for answers. I don’t think Kathleens answer was any better/worse than the other reporter’s opinion in this section. Had Bernie or Jim Thomas given that response no one (especially FlyinHigh) would have given it a second thought. The thing that gave FlyinHigh’s motives away was his uncalled for attack on Brian Burwell. Correct me if I’m wrong here, but I don’t see Burwell’s opinion listed or any mention of him in this article. I can appreciate criticizing these reporters when its called for since all of them write something every once in awhile that make you go, huh? But the frequent attacks on Kathleen and Brian are by far lopsided when compared to the other reporters on this staff, and it makes of us neutral readers wonder what are the real motives of the posters. After reading your post (assuming that you aren’t FlyinHigh), why would you ally yourself with this idiot?

Jim or Kathleen: The Rams have ran the ball better than passing against the good teams, so wouldnt you want to continue to do what is more effective against the Lions. Also, in the Rams case, wouldnt you want to open up the passing game with the running game-it is noy uncommon for teams to do this. I would think when the Rams do pass the ball it would catch the Lions off guard and create the element of surprise and be effective vs a poor secondary. The Rams offense has had too many 3rd and 8 or 3rd and 10 situations because the Rams throw the ball on 1st and 2nd down and the plays are not working. Also in the RED Zone the Rams get away from what got them there-running the ball. Why change what is working against the good teams when you are playing a bad team- the Lions?

— CoMoWestsider84
11:19 am October 29th, 2009

Key to the game: Ball control. If the Rams run the ball 3 out of 4 plays on offense and slip in the occasional play action on the fourth play then they will have a good chance of winning the game. This will stop our defense from getting ‘gassed’ by the start of the 4th quarter, will wear down the Lions D, and has proven to be our only effective way of moving the ball. If Jackson doesn’t get 30+ carries Sunday then someone needs to question the competency of the coaching staff. The defense will do a good job when needed (judging by previous games) if the offense keeps it off the field.
