Nowhere to run for Rams

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: The Rams had just one rushing first down and a total of 55 yards on the ground Sunday. This against a Jacksonville defense that was ranked 18th in the league coming into the game. What happened to the Rams run game Sunday?

JIM THOMAS
True, Jacksonville was 18th in run defense, but they were a top 10 team in yards per carry allowed. So you knew the rushing yards wouldn’t come easy. But you’ve still got to try. Jacksonville kept pounding away with Maurice Jones-Drew, and he ended up with 100 yards-plus and saw some key runs down the stretch. Especially with Donnie Avery out, there’s no excuse for not using Steven Jackson more in the second half.

BILL COATS
The blocking up front was poor, affording Jackson little room to operate. Also, Rams OC Pat Shurmur called almost twice as many pass plays as he did runs — 35-18. That wasn’t a bad strategy, however, since the Jaguars ranked 30th in the league in pass defense.

JEFF GORDON
Once Donnie Avery got hurt, the Rams showed little interest in throwing the ball downfield. Once they decided to attack only a portion of the field, the Jaguars could load up against the run without concern and outnumber the Rams blockers. If this team can’t mount a halfway decent downfield aerial threat, Jackson will find little running room from here on out.

Not that he isn’t talented, but is anyone else starting to think Donnie Avery is too fragile to be a reliable NFL player? I mean, the guy did nothing to hurt his hip yesterday other than jump for the ball and land on his side.

Tim– I’ve been thinking Avery and Burton as well are too fragile to make a big difference long term for this team

Is there anything to get excited about regarding this team? Anything at all? Laurinaitis?

Avery was, I believe, hurt in college, perhaps his senior year. I think he played with a dislocated thumb; but this is from memory and I would be glad to be corrected.

James Laurenitis is easily the best player on our team. What was up with Jason Brown and Goldberg splitting PT yesterday? correct me if I’m wrong but it seemed like they were. Donnie Avery is not a number one if you havent realized that by now you are not watching the games. He is a 3 at best.

Correction, Jason Smith. My bad.

Things to get excited about (no, seriously!):
Lauranaitis
SJ39
Architect of the SB-winning Giants’ D is our head coach
Most likely dropping Bulger’s contract after this year, freeing cap space
$22 mil in dead money goes away after this year, freeing more cap space
A GM that appears to know what he’s doing
A ton of potential on the O-line
An owner who appears genuinely interested in keeping this team in StL

I know it’s kind of weak, but at 5-32, or whatever, sometimes you have to focus on the little things while you’re working your way out of the basement.

Another pathetic coaching job….if the talent is even (and in this game it was) the coaching has to make a difference. FIRE SPAGS.COM!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Before the season started, I assumed 3 areas on the Rams would be improved, aside from the defense:

>run blocking
>tight end play
>fullback lead blocking

So far these areas show virtually no improvement, even after money was tossed at two of the areas. I realize with no deep threat (absent Robinson and Avery), teams are stacking the box, but where are the tight ends and can’t Karney and the O-line open some holes? I’m beginning to wonder if free agents like Jason Brown are ever worth the money, suggesting once again that if you cannot draft pro-bowl type players in the early rounds, you’re screwed big time. The Rams rarely seem to compensate in the free agent market.

Spring training starts in 4 months.

Sam in Dallas……do you beleive spags is a genuis because the giants were LOADED at defensive line that year? He is just another coordinator in over his head at head coach….He can be defensive coordinator if you SPAGWAGONIST insist, but we need a new head coach….we have only won 5 games in the THREE SEASONS! since we ran Martz out of town for making the playoffs nearly every year.

Wildwood Curt,
I understand your frustration, and I would agree that the TE corps has been underwhelming this year. But in regards to Karney, it’s not really his fault, he’s been very limited in his opportunities to be on the field, since Shurmur is throwing the ball so much. And the O-Line seems to be fairly solid this year. In spite of Shurmur throwing so much, teams are still stacking the box, and there’s only so much that 5 linemen can do against 8 defenders. I put these issues on the OC, he’s showing the same maddening traits as Andy Reid, who has historically abandoned the run for stretches of a game, in spite of having a weapon like Westbrook.

Big Man,
I don’t think that you know much about coaching. Could you have named me the NYG’s D-line before the 2007 and 2008 seasons? They were missing Strahan one year and Uminyora (?) the other year. But guys like Tuck were hardly all-stars before they got into the Spags’ D. And if you can’t see that this team is better than last year’s team, then you obviously don’t know football. I don’t know if Spags is a genius, but I do know that this team is playing with heart, if not talent, and this D is much improved over last year, in spite of lacking a significant upgrade in talent over last year. 6 games is too soon to be calling for the coach to be fired. If you can’t add anything productive to the conversation, just leave the rest of us alone.

Tim: Re: Avery too fragile? Maybe, but Bruce was slightly built, might describe him as fragile therefore, but he knew how to protect himself by staying out of dangerous moments, i.e., countless pass catches then driving to the ground before a defended had a chance to smash him. In Avery, who has probably just as much of body talent, just doesn’t know yet how to stay away from body damage threats or reduce their results. Time will tell if he gets smart enough. Burtom may have to learn the same..but both are talented.

John: Jackson is the top talent, proven. Your guy Laurinaitus may become the top dog soon enough, but I like him also very much.

Wildwood Curt: Pretty wild thought that Spring Training opens in 4 months! Good thought about going after FA’s that are proven..maybe cheaper. But there are two dozen teams that their OL’s can’t open a hole often for the runner. Also, I believe there are OL guys in the lower draft slots just as good, often enough…excepting a REAL GOOD LT occassionly.

Sam, in Dallas: So you think Spags is just another wantabee DC looking to become a HC? Maybe, but what on earth would provide you with that premature conclusive insight at this stage of his tenure? Particuarly on the scraps of this team’s destruction over the last decade and a given roster of remnants with a long losing program in their heads? The first official grade card for Spags would be AFTER

When your best player on the defense is a rookie, you know that you have more than just a couple issues. Spags has little to work with yes, but it was bad playcalling against JAX that lost it for us, not the fact that we didnt go for it with :07 left. (Knitpicking at nothing). We need to continue to rebuild, but also make good use of what we have. Does anybody else remember signing Bajema and Karney, two great blockers, and investing millions of dollars into a mediocre O-line? Anybody else remember that S. Jackson is our only elite player and that this is a RUNNING team, that our recievers have little to no experience? “Fans need to be patient”. What else have we been doing for the past 3 YEARS???
