Will Rams reach bye week at 0-8?

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: The Rams are 0-4 and have the Minnesota Vikings coming to town this weekend. After that the Rams travel to Jacksonville, host Indianapolis and travel to Detroit. Do you see the Rams getting a win before their bye in Week 9? If so, where do you think it will come?

JIM THOMAS
I don’t know where the win comes from. Whether the Rams played Green Bay, Minnesota, Indianapolis or New Orleans, home, away or in Saskatchewan, the result’s probably the same: A loss. But what could be winnable games at home, such as Jacksonville and Detroit, are on the road, where its’ always more difficult to win under any circumstances. (The Sept. 20 game at Washington would also fall into this category.) So the schedule works against the Rams. And at 6 points a game in scoring, the Rams might have to pitch a shutout to end their losing streak.

BILL COATS
No, I see the Rams getting their first win right after the bye week, with a big upset of the Saints. There’s precedence: two years ago, the Rams were 0-8 and won at New Orleans after their bye. So, why can’t history repeat itself?

JEFF GORDON
After watching the massive Week 4 regression, it is hard to feel optimistic about the Rams’ chances in any professional football. Since the Rams apparently have no ability to throw the ball down the field, opponents will gang-tackle Steven Jackson until he breaks down. I believed this team had a chance to win a half-dozen games back before the injuries hit and the losses mounted. Now I cannot see them winning a game before the bye.

KATHLEEN NELSON
The only chance on paper appears to be in Detroit. To win on the road, though, the Rams’ defense must continue to improve and come up with a turnover or two or three. The offensive line remains the key on the other side. Until it improves and protects the QB, the offense will be too one-dimensional, relying only on Steven Jackson.

KEVIN WHEELER (Host of “Sports Open Line” on KMOX)
I don’t see a win happening before the bye, but then again, I don’t think any of us saw them beating Dallas last year either. Strange things happen in football so the Rams could prove me wrong, but until they stop shooting themselves in the foot game after game it’s hard to predict a win for the home team. The best chance for a win looks like the game at Detroit but even the Lions are scoring some points. Before I can feel good about a potential win, I’d have to see some signs of life on offense.

I feel terrible for Spags and Devaney. These guys came into an impossible mission. The Rams will be this years version of the Detroit Lions. I don’t see a winnable game with the exception of Detroit. I don’t know why they don’t go out and look for another QB off the scrap heap to backup Bulger. Boller is definitely NOT he answer. I also wonder why this team doesn’t bring in Matt Jones as a replacement for Robinson.
I know the guy had off field problems, but he is a very good receiever and we need SOMEBODY to throw to!

i do believe we can beat the Jaguars, last time we faced them steven jackson had over 15o yards and that was back when Jags had Stroud and henderson in the middle…..the players are going to start to get win-hungry and step up.

The Rams defense has improved (19th overall in NFL) and plays extremely well for long periods of time and in the red zone. If the special teams could get over their game-killing gaffes and missed kicks, they could contribute also. But the offense. You have to score to win.

I realize this is looking back, but the Rams puzzled me by passing on Jeff Garcia as a backup. Despite being equipped to run the current Rams offense, the Rams Philly connection refused to sign him. Maybe his skills have eroded more than we fans can see; or,maybe it’s something personal. Apparently there were reasons.

Mike Martz, while considered arrogant, did put points on the board. Is it arrogance or confidence?

Beat the Saints who are probably the best team in the NFC? I dunno what Coats is drinking but could I get a keg of it delivered to me before kick off Sunday.

To Paul. Mike Martz never put a single point on the board, the players on the team he coached did. Do you seriously believe that the talent on this team is anywhere close to the talent Martz was fortunate to coach?

I don’t know why they didn’t get Jefff Garcia either! i like him!!! his “erodded” talents are still waaaay better than what we have NOW! unless something is done soon (big names, big time players, big money)…i am sorry to say…my beloved rams…my well loved and always a supporter of the rams…WILL be 0-16! it hurts to write that…but it is a reality…and it sucks…but thats how it goes! see you next year i guess…with the 1ST pick in the nfl 2010 draft..the st. louis rams select…ANYBODY GOOD!!!

I have to echo the thought’s that some people post about Martz. I think if Haslett was hired and he brought Martz in, points would have been scored. I know many say that we don’t have the personal for it, and that is true to a point. However Martz was the type that would force the action and tempo, he would go deep often and would run as well. He might miss, but there would be hits as well and each time a player made a nice gain, the defense would have to adjust in one way or another. He’d score points, without a doubt. They would attack.

Of course going back in time is just living the past. I feel badly and I’m sure Spags does too. He doesn’t wish to fail. I’m sure we’ll get better as a team, and we need to get better as fans as well and support the present and not keep looking at what was.

We had a terrific run, it’s over. Lets work on getting back there now and cheer em on!

Be good!

I really don’t know why the pundits believe this team could beat dtw, they never had a problem with scoring points. The Jags get better every week, Minnesota is super bowl bound, the only way the colts lose is if they miss the flight. 00000000000000 for the year lets get ready for the draft and hope our future pick don’t get hurt.

To call this a MICKEY MOUSE ORGANIZATION would be an insult to MICKEY MOUSE…..When is this sad sack bunch gonna wake up and realize it doesnt matter WHO we play or HOW HARD WE PLAY,what matters is that these players ,and i mean every single frigging one of them learns to f–ing think and f–ing protect the ball and not make stupid penalties, and not fair catch the ball on the 8 yard line and not put 12 guys in the huddle or on the field and not call the same simpleton F—ing plays over and over again and start to play and coach like they are worth at least some of the ridiculous money they are being paid to act like buffoons out there,we won’t win a f–ing game .period.

There isn’t a receiver on the team that could carry Holt or Bruce’s lunch, much less a line that would give Bulger/Boller/anyone time to hit them. As a result Jackson is the lone offensive weapon that will last until he is annually hurt. The running game and tight end sets are abysmal at best. Blocking is non-existant for either the run or the pass. Could Martz do anything with this bunch-probably not. He couldn’t do anything in San Francisco or Detroit with talent challenged teams. As for a win, I originally predicted two-now I am at a loss as to who will play so badly as to let this team win. I do know it won’t be the Saints.

Yes.
Folks - last game was one of those “The score looks worse than the game” things. If you don’t beleive me, go look at the stats. We were almsot dead even in all categories. We only gave up 228 TOTAL yards all game. SF did NOTHING offensively that impressed me. We also were without #37 who makes a HUGE impact as FS.
We shut down SF’s so called pounding running game.
Face it, the team who was respoesible for Beating the ST Rams last week WAS the STL rams. I take nothing away from SF, they played an average game, but took advantage of our mistakes. Good teams do that, but I am anxious to see this same SF team do that again, IN Stl.

I think that the only chance for a victory is at Detroit. Why are we surprised that Coats picks a victory against the Saints? If you read his report cards after the games, you realize that he really doesn’t watch them.

Any of you who think the rams stand a chance against the lions are out of your mind. Are you kidding me? 28-0 in seattle. 35-0 in San Fran. 9-7 in Washington. . And a beat down in our own stadium? The lions offense isn’t great, but they can score more than 7 points. . Stick a fork in us we are donzo. . Atleast the lions put up 24 against a stiff D in Chi town

The Sporting News predicted the Rams would start the year off at 0-8. I couldn’t believe it when I first saw that back in August. Now I’m starting to believe it. Anything is possible, but the Rams need a lot of fortuitous breaks for them to win right now. A big reason they beat Dallas last year was because a broken down Brad Johnson was at quarterback. Can the Rams get lucky and play against Culpepper when they go to Detroit? Forget 0-8, can the Rams avoid 0-16, which will run their loss streak to 26, which would tie them with the 1976-77 Buccaneers in sheer futility. Heck, as long as Checketts pulls it off and gets the Rams, I don’t care. I want football in St. Louis, win or lose, I want the Rams here.

Unfortunately, I don’t see a single win this season! Which means Spags is automatically fired! Very rarely can you rebuild a team with a rookie head coach. We need experienced leadership in Rams Park. Luckily there’s 4 guys by the names of Gruden, Cowher, Holmgren, and Shanahan who want back into the NFL next year. They all have something in common, can anyone guess what that is?

Hint… they wear it on their finger!

Tony,
The 4 Vet coaches you name are not coming to STL. Get serious man.You think this lame franchise is going to attract a high profile coach. The Cowboys will tag one when Phillips is fired and he will be;we should have gotten Ryan and he wanted to come here. Spags will not make it here. Defensive coach, period and NO offensive coordinator spells failure. Bulger got a big contract in error, “O” line is weak and not going anywhere. Years to come to make this a ‘99 team again. I see 2-14 where I tagged them coming into the season. They will pull 2 upsets along the way but the Vikes will not be one. 0-5 on the way

7:35 pm October 6th, 2009

rams will not win a game this year. first pick overall will be traded away , cause they need lots of help making up for horrible drafting before. so enjoy the nachos , and just wait till some real talent arrives. these guys are losers. no talent , and it shows every week. when others find talent in late rounds , we draft a qb who was coached by ryan leaf. nuff said. go giants , steelers , vikes , colts and saints, when you draft well , you show it..

On paper the Rams look hopeless this season. BUT football is a game of upsets and like Chris Berman always says: “that is why they play the game”. The Rams will get a win but it is unknown when.

Do you know how much anticipation the Lions will have when it comes to the St. Louis game? They will be so pumped, that they will score 30 points against the Rams. It will be like March. In like a Lion and the Rams will go out like a lamb. 0-8 for sure. And if Bulger is QB, they will be -1 and 9 if that is possible.

10:07 pm October 6th, 2009

Put the Kid in, at least we’d have something to look @ different and he just might right the sinkin ship. What can it hurt ? Please give us some glimmer of hope Spags.

I too wish we had an attacking offense (where are you Mr.Martz?)

Shurmer’s playbook and play calling/scheming and planning is bland, gutless and unimaginative.

10:53 pm October 6th, 2009

The Rams will be competitive in the game with the Lions but I believe the Jags are on an up swing and will beat the Rams handily.

The winnable games come against Seattle, Tennessee, Houston and maybe even San Fransisco at the end of the season. I say this knowing full well they can only win these games if they score. They have to score.

We should see some improvement in the second half of this season but it will be next year before we will see a better product.

For those of you rooting for 0-16….it won’t happen.

“The Rams will upset Indi…Bet on it….”

LOL. This is sarcasm, right?! Indy scored more on its first five possessions of last Sunday’s game than the Rams have scored their ENTIRE SEASON so far.

The only debate with this game will be whether Peyton Manning even bothers to make the flight to St. Louis, as the Colts could probably win easily even with Jim Sorgi at the helm.

As a long time Lions fan, I know the feeling you guys are going through right now; all too well. The Rams have way more to work with than Detroit did last year though, I think. If you can run the ball, you have a shot at least. It is tough to see a win though for these guys besides the Lions, but that is becoming a stretch.
Seriously though, beat the Saints? If that happens, great for them, but that would be one heck of an upset.
Hang in there fans, get ownership figured out and hope to land some talented management, Bill Cowher maybe?

The question should be, do you see a win on the Rams schedule before the start of the 2010 season.
Answer… NO!

— FJS
12:33 pm October 7th, 2009

As a Pack fan it might be wishful thinking, but it’s set up for an upset of the Viqueens.

1. Short weak.
2. Hangover from a very emotional win over the Packers.
3. The Rams play pretty good against the run.
4. Brett Favre does not like the Jones dome. Anyone remember the 6 INT playoff game? I sure do.
5. Easy to look past the Rams when the Vikes have the Ravens up next.

Two problems Rams can’t score and have very little talent.

Believe me. I’m pulling for them this week.
