Saints marching in … any chance for Rams?

THE WATERCOOLER

QUESTION: If the Rams are to have any chance against the 8-0 New Orleans Saints this weekend, what are the keys to the game plan?

JIM THOMAS
1. Ball control on offense, the Saints are a modest 19th in run defense.
2. Takeaways on defense, easier said than done against Drew Brees.
3. Something special on special teams, be it long returns, blocked kicks, etc.

This is a challenge similar to what the Rams faced against Minnesota and Indianapolis — but New Orleans may be the most high-powered offense of the three.

JEFF GORDON
If the Rams can consistently throw the ball downfield to balance their offense, maintain time of possession and finish off scoring drives, they can stay in the game. But apparently this is an impossible task for this offense, so the Rams are doomed to a blowout loss. Even if the Saints turn the ball over again and again, they will win this game unless the Rams used their bye week to reinvent their offense.

BRYAN BURWELL

After seeing Carolina run up and down the field against the Saints, the run-oriented Rams certainly have a chance. If the Rams can stick to a Steven Jackson rushing attack and keep Drew Brees off the field, the home crowd could become a huge factor.

KEVIN WHEELER (Host of “Sports Open Line” on KMOX)
Call Tonya Harding and ask for some advice on how to “handle” competition? Lock the doors of the Dome just before the Saints arrive and lose the keys?

Sorry. Couldn’t resist. Seriously, there is no way this game is competitive. None. The Saints are the highest-scoring team in the league averaging 38 points per game and the Rams are the lowest-scoring team in the league at just over 9 points per game. Heck, the Saints are 59 points better than the next highest-scoring team this season (Minnesota). The Rams have scored a total of 77 points as a point of reference.

But wait, there’s more. The Saints are +129 when points scored are compared to points allowed and the Rams are -144. That’s a 273 point difference between these two teams over eight games. That’s a 34-point-per-game difference in case you were wondering.

There is nothing the Rams can do to be competitive in this game. Nothing legal anyway.

As A Ram fan since the 60’s…I can only pray that the Saints don’t beat the Bears 73-0 record

I have to agree with Wheeler. There is no way in hell that Rams are gonna prevail with this high power opponent. They are in a totally different level,I’m talking cloud9 and bottom of the grave.

This game will be closer than you think. I don’t think the Rams will win, obviously, BUT the Saints do have issues in certain areas. Also, the NO offense isn’t THAT much better than the Colts and the Rams gave them a tough time for 3 quarters before the exhaustion hit them from being on the field for so long.

I wish I could delete my previous comments. I don’t mean to be so negative. I’m sorry Ram fans. But does it not seem like the Rams play an undefeated team every other or every 3rd week? I’m just frustrated with the schedule…that’s all. Not even SJ39 can “will” a win in this one…but like Chris Berman says…”thats why they play the games”

the saints squeaking by the lowly panthers was bad for the rams. the saints are going to come out looking to show that they’re the #1 team in the nfl. this will be ugly.

since the rams are coming off a bye week, the game will be closer than expected. my prediction…saints 45-14.

Drew Brees is going to start for my ffl team this Sunday. He should win for me all by himself.

The same thing was said when Dallas made their last trip to St.Louis.It comes down to if you want the guy across from you to make you look like a joke or not..

I predict a major upset this weekend in St. Louis. I know it sounds crazy…but the Rams did have two weeks to prepare for the Saints. The Saints are going to come in with to much confidence and simply over look the Rams. Just sayin, it could happen. GO RAMS!!!!!!!!!

Go Rams- whatever you are ingesting to get such a crazy view, gimme some! Seriously, it pains me to agree with most everything written here. No way can the Rams win. Their db’s are not good enough to stop these guys. And there is no pass rush to speak of, so Brees will have a about 5 seconds to find a receiver when he passes. Our best hope, pound the ball with 39 and hope for mistakes- defense, do the bend but don’t break. Maybe if they hang around long enough something good will happen, it seems like they are due.

Beat New Orleans??? They’re not the “Ain’ts” anymore. Not a snowball’s chance in hell of the Rams winning this game. Now maybe if they could play Detroit again… oh wait, they barely one that one.

The Saints issues are mostly on defense. The offense is banged up a little bit, but that won’t slow the Saints. They’re coming and they’re focused on ramming right through your defense. Payton won’t go for a 73-0 game, but he will try to score quick and often to get it out of reach early, then slack off. But if the rams keep it competitve, be ready for a 60 minute fight.

As a lifelong Saints fan who used to live in St. Louis, I have to say I am really looking forward to this game…the Saints suffered years of humiliation at the hands of both the LA and STL Rams. So,it’s nice for the Black and Gold to be favored in this match-up for once. That being said, we are talking about the New Orleans Saints…strange things tend to happen when they are ahead in any game. This one may be closer than you all think…in the meantime, y’all eat some Ted Drewes custard for me!

I like Jeff Gordon’s post the best. It sums it up perfectly and I agree. The Rams haven’t passed the ball well all year, they haven’t been able to finish drives. You really don’t want to see Spagnuolo’s team get it’s tail kicked by 30 or 40 points because they don’t deserve to look that bad, but when you got an offense that can’t score, it’s inevitable.

The only chance that the Rams have is successfully using the same thing that would occasionally de-rail the old ‘Greatest Show on Turf’ team and the Peyton Manning-Colts teams. That would be to orchestrate slow offensive drives that eat up a bunch clock. Keep the Saints offense off the field and thus out of rhythm. Miami almost beat the Colts that way earlier this year (I realize the Dolphins D is by far better than the Rams but its possible). The Rams would have to play mistake free football in order to have a chance. Something that they continually fail to do. Looks like Goliath is visiting David this week.

This might work: Inform the Saints that the game has been moved to Busch Stadium. Then, start the game at the Dome and dress up some big fat guys to look like the Saints and run up the score as much as possible before the Saints figure out what’s happened and show up. Because if we have to actually play these guys, they’re going to open a big can of whoop-ass and the game’s over by halftime.

Write this down because you heard it here first. THE RAMS WILL WIN ON SUNDAY. Not by much but they will win. A steady balance of SJ and some good old fashion smash mouth defense and the game is ours. YOU GOT TO BELIEVE.

6:28 pm November 9th, 2009

If the Rams would call the Eagles and bring Mike Vick in as QB, then claim Larry Johnson whom KC released today they might have a chance.

With MB at QB this team is doomed because this Slow WB can’t and won’t be able to move the offense.

— Majicman
6:35 pm November 9th, 2009

Here’s another idea: Have Jason Brown or someone else on the Rams O-line yell “Fumble” during every play. It might take the Saints a few plays to figure out there wasn’t a fumble and we can pick up an extra yard or two so it’s only 3rd and 8 all the time.

Or you could tell the Saints that the Rams are all sick with the Swine Flu. That will cause them to back off just a bit. Hey, it’s worth a try.

any team has a chance on any given sunday…rams are hurting….no question, but there will be a turnaround….i do think if the reports outta philly are true…we should give some consideration to acquiring Vick….if Dungys behind him…i think he will turn his life and career around…why not in st. louis? him and Jackson could be awesome!

Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if you guys upset us this weekend. I honestly don’t believe we will go undefeated this season, and honestly, I’m more afraid of playing you guys and the Bucs than I am playing the Patriots or Cowboys…..just seen it too many times in the past…of course….this team is far from the Aints, so who knows?? You gotta play the game! Keep your heads up!

9:25 pm November 9th, 2009

If you keep the game within 10 against an undefeated team - this team wins. Yo, Adrian! Classic underdog game wherein the Rams could benefit from: a week off, a team with little to worry about if it suffers a loss, an offensive line that is starting to be respectible, if not pretty good, and Steven Jackson who dishes out the concept of “no” better than my mother.

Manning is a magician and I discount that game on the basis of simply unfair. However, Spags and group may very well see this as a victory, of sorts, if they maintain tempo, score differential and game strategy to the final bell.

Yo, Adrian! I just wanna go da distance with Creed. Then I know I’m somebody from the nayborhood. Yo, Butkis………

The Rams are heading in the right direction. Two weeks in a row without a loss! Just remember that in the NFL on any given Sunday … I don’t think that this Sunday is the given Sunday for the Rams. I will, however, be an interesting game.

10:35 pm November 9th, 2009

if the the saints bring theire A-game,the RAMS have no shot…it will be ablowout.if the saints bring their B-game the saints still win because Drew Brees will out perform Mark Bulger when it counts.

— cowpoodle
11:09 pm November 9th, 2009

It should be at least a 30-35 point spread like it was when Manning and the boys came to town. The Rams could keep it close at first but the excellent teams soon wear down the poor teams in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Can you imagine the nightmares Bulger must be having prior to this game. I am sure some fans will want Spags and Devaney’s head after this game but Sean Payton has a coaching staff and team the Rams can only dream about. This Saints team is much like the 99-02 Rams teams. I just hope the Saints don’t injure many players because that is something this Rams team can’t afford at the moment.

— Rams 5010
12:08 am November 10th, 2009

Steven Jackson is your only chance at keeping this thing competitive. DeAngelo Williams, Michael Turner, and to some extent, Ricky Williams, have absolutely SHREDDED our run defense the past few games. This is mainly due to the untimely injury of Sedrick Ellis, our reliable run-stuffer. Without Sedrick, the D-Line has been getting pushed around pretty easily; when there hasn’t been a huge gash up the middle, bouncing a run outside has proven effective, as our linebackers have had trouble sealing the edge. Again, I say a 150+ yard game from Steven Jackson is your only chance here…. :)

The Saints are 14 point favorites, I would assume you are all betting your life savings on the Saints to cover. Putting your money where your mouths are?

— Andy
11:55 am November 10th, 2009

“reinvent their offense” Jeff? Did I miss Bulger’s release? Even if one were to call for an upset (and I certainly won’t, 48-10 N.O.), it wouldn’t be because the offense was scoring many points. That’s the problem here, if you can’t score much in the NFL, you’re pretty much doomed. We can’t count on our defense to score more than say one or two TDs, and you can only get at most one TD out of special teams. Add to that 10 points max out of the offense, and you will be short about 2 TDs still. Drew Brees would need to get injured and taken out of the game in the first quarter to have a remote chance of an upset.

Check your stats. Saints made adjustments and shut down carolinas running game second half. Saints defense spends more time on the field than any other team due to saints offense scoring so fast.

Tampa beat GB. Oakland beat Philly. Miami and Carolina both had N.O. on the ropes until the 4th Q. Anything can happen so we’ll see. If some think the Rams will be blown out, maybe they shouldn’t play the game huh? I’m just saying… However, I do think the key to this game is for the Defense and special teams to score to make sure Bulger stays on the sidelines. Hee Hee!!

6:33 pm November 10th, 2009

You know, the Rams could use some real “fans” rather than a bunch of bums waiting for Sunday just to see how badly they get beat and then gloat over their prediction. Ram fans have become like abusive husbands who beat up on their wife all week and wonder why she doesn’t get all dressed up and full of love on the weekends. Maybe the Rams players and staff are tired of being bashed and their response on the field is a result of just taking the paycheck and telling the “fans” to stick it where the “sun don’t shine”. Grow up, Rams fans, and start supporting your team or file for divorce and let ‘em go somewhere else who would give anything to have an NFL team and support them, win or lose, for the love of the game.

Here is how the Saints D ranks in some other categories.
Interceptions. #1
passes defended. #1
opposing passer rating. #1
defensive touchdowns scored. #1
completion percentage by opposing passer. #1
third down percentage. #1
turnover differential. #4
passing yards surrendered per attempt. #4
red zone defense. #5

and in the 4th quarter alone their O has outscored opponents by 91-18

Reading some of these comments reminds me so much of Saints seasons gone by. I do empathize with your plight this season, I sincerely do. I do not sympathize, however. I am hoping for a huge, demoralizing, humiliating, hopeless, makes-you-look-like-school-girls victory over the Rams.

I still remember Pat Hayden and crew rolling into the Superdome in the late 70’s and destroying my beloved Archie Manning-led Saints.

I won’t even mention the fantastic Rams team of the late 90’s early 2000’s.

We as Saints fans deserve to see a victory, the likes of what will occur this Sunday to your Rams. There is “always next year” Rams fans.
