Where do Rams rank among NFL’s bad teams?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

THE WATERCOOLER:
Through eight weeks of the season, the NFL has one winless team (Tampa Bay) and five with just one win (St. Louis, Detroit, Kansas City, Tennessee and Cleveland). Plus a couple of hard-to-watch two-win teams (Washington and Oakland). In that context, do the Rams have a better future than some of these teams?

JIM THOMAS:
In terms of Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Detroit, the Rams are on a similar track, with rookie first-year head coaches and rebuilding teams that have purposely gotten younger. The Lions, however, already have their quarterback of the future in Matthew Stafford getting on-the-job training. That may be the Rams’ fate next season. Is Tennessee in for a coaching change? And Cleveland, well, they’re just Cleveland. The second version of Paul Brown’s team just can’t seem to get it going An added element of uncertainty for St. Louis — an ownership change looming on the horizon that could change a lot of things.

BERNIE MIKLASZ:
The Rams are for sale, which is an issue, but for now it hasn’t impacted the operation. They have good harmony and stability in the front office. GM Billy Devaney and head coach Steve Spagnuolo are working well together. The personnel department, the scouts, are being treated as an important part of the operation. You just don’t see the glaring dysfunction that greatly damaged the Rams during the latter years of the previous regime. And in this context the Rams are in better shape than many of the other woeful NFL losers these days.

BILL COATS:
I like the Rams’ future, because I think they’re going about things the right way. That is, they’re not pulling off desperate moves now to try to win a relatively meaningless game or two but hamstringing themselves down the road. They’re being patient and prudent, and I believe that approach will pay off in the long run.

JEFF GORDON:
It’s too soon to say that the Devaney/Spagnuolo combo will get it done in St. Louis. The next Rams owner will get to make that call. But at least the Rams aren’t a dysfunctional mess like the Browns, Raiders and Redskins. In all three of those cases, you wonder if the ownership will get a handle. In Cleveland, Randy Lerner needs to find a strong footman he trusts to show him the way. In Washington, Daniel Snyder to hire a stronger football man and stay out of his way. And in Oakland, Al Davis needs to sell. There is no hope for a turnaround otherwise.

Bench Bulger!!! His best asset is not throwing interceptions. While that’s a good asset to have in a quarterback, the fact that he never makes any plays to win games pretty much means the Rams won’t win any games. I think Boller gives the Rams a better chance to win because Boller has some athletic ability to make winning plays by scrambling or throwing the ball down the field. Boller actually threw some touchdown passes when he got his chance to play. They need to give Null some reps as well. Why was he drafted if he was never going to be given an opportunity to play? We know that with Bulger the Rams can hang close with teams like the Redskins, Jags and Lions, but he can’t make a winning play (SJ won the Lions game). Give the ball to Boller or Null! At least there is hope that they might be able to make a game-winning play and there is hope that the defenses will start to respect the downfield pass. Bulger is a loser!

Al Davis does not own the Raiders. He is the “Managing General Partner”. He owns a very small share of stock in the team, but is basically the CEO…and I love the fact that he runs such a magnificent franchise. I hope Davis lives to be 150…LOL!

Wow, Bulger had so much to do with this opinion poll, sdram. What a loser you are, your 15 minutes of “fame” are up.

No one mentions Tampa Bay? What a mess that place is.

I would say that the Rams are better than the Browns, Lions, Buccaneers and maybe Chiefs. I don’t think we have the talent level of Oakland or Washington, but we have better team unity and leadership. I don’t know what is going on in Tennessee, but they are definitly a better team than the Rams.

Have to agree with Bernie and Bill, I am cautiously optimistic that the Rams have a brighter future than the other teams mentioned. Of course an awful lot depends upon our next draft and FA pickups.

Heres a list of the “rebuilding teams” that are on the right track to be winning teams in the near future: #1. Detroit Lions (theyve got their franchise QB and started him right away. A good RB, a top WR and a decent Oline. The defense needs work, but they have some talent there) #2. STL Rams (good O-line, top RB, young (injured) WRs but potential there, and a great def. coach, all we need is a QB!!) #3. KC Chiefs

Tampa Bay, Raiders and Browns are just in trouble. Tampa has awful QBs and Coaches, Browns are Browns… Raiders have Russell…

Raiders could be a great Team if they started Garcia or got a better QB.. Ruseel is awful and has no potential!

I dont think Spags wants to bench bulger because that would be going against what he has already said to (mainly) the players and that is Bulger is the starting qurterback. Now if he gets injured then fine, but Spags will not be seen panicking and switching up QBs…that or he sees enough to know that Bulger is the best option right now…It hurts, but unless we make a deal for Kevin Kolb(sp?) from the Eagles for what ever that takes then get used to seeing #10 every week

I too agree with Bernie but Gordo is right too. The next owner will have a lot of impact in what happens with this team. I feel the new owner should sit back and see what Spags and Devaney can do. Dan Snyder in Washington interfers too much with this coaches and we don’t need anyone like him at the moment. To be fair, let Spags and company work for awhile, and then jump in if you have to.

I didn’t mean to give the impression (if I did) that I think Devaney and Spags have proven anything. They haven’t. They have a long way to go on that. I am just saying that compared to other teams at the bottom of the NFL right now, at least the Rams’ operation is running smoothly, and with the kind of harmony that represents a dramatic change from the past. Thanks.

Playing Bulger is rapidly becoming meaningless because he’s not the future. Problem is, Boller isn’t either; he’s just a clipboard guy. Playing Null with this receiving corps could damage his confidence, but management has to see what he’s got. Since we’re going to get blown out by New Orleans, maybe Null should lose his virginity in the second half of that game.

If Spagnuolo can get the Rams through this horrendous season and maintain locker room stability and his steady leadership, he will prove he is the man for the job. I think he is well on his way to doing that. The players seem to buy into his program, they seem to respect him, they want to play for him and he has a coherent philosophy. We haven’t had that since Vermeil. I think we have more potential in the future than the others on the list with the possible exception of Detroit. They seem to have some good young pieces in place.

I’d go ahead and rate the Rams ahead of Cleveland, Oakland and Washington. I do think the Rams would of made more strides this year if they had moved on with the quarterback position and had drafted that franchise quarterback last April. I think for a team that is trying to find themselves and recreate a new image they wasted an opportunity to do so by sticking faithful to Bulger. I gotta believe that Devaney and Spags would never have passed up on Sanchez last April if they had any idea that Marc would perform like this. The average fan in St. Louis isn’t surprised, but these 2 men are. Like I said before, these guys thought they could rebuild the team around Marc, and that was mistake number 1, and it was a big mistake. Next year should finally be that breath of fresh air. I want to see the Rams move forward at quarterback, I don’t care if the new kid struggles, it’s time to move on!

Bernie,

Has word gotten back to Spags that the league thinks his coordinators both suck? If point differential counts for anything, the Rams are still in the running for worst team. Don’t drink the koolaid–we played the Lions last week! This week could be record-breaking ugly against the Saints.

I don’t know why everyone expects the Rams to contend this year just because they changed personnel from top to bottom. History has only those teams that have been drafting in the top for a few years even making a good showing in their first year. Do those who expect a first year miracle even cover those things or are they closing a blind eye to the facts. Even Vermeil, you do remember Vermeil, didn’t even come close to contending in his first year! Typical of the media to stir up controversy. Get real folks, it’s best to build upon a good foundation or the house, so to speak, will not stand in the face of a storm. Another thing, enough with the Bulger thing, because of cap issues we got him whether we like it or not! Stafford, in his first year isn’t exactly leading the Lions to the promised land either! Sanchez who has personnel is falling flat on his face too! Wake up and smell the roses! Be glad we got a coach who is building a defense that will win games!

Thank you akramsfan60, couldn’t have said it better. Pay a average QB top dollar just to lock him in for a couple of years to realize he just average, then you use the 2nd pick of the 1st round of the draft to pay top dollar for another unproven, most likely average(and showing it now)QB top dollar with a multi year contract. Makes since to me Ziggy!!

Damn Bernie, you must LOVE this guy. If you havent noticed we are much worse this year than last year. And it is amazing how easy it is to run the ball when your down by 3TD’s in the second half….PLEASE

It is difficult in these economic times to watch Bulger play so horribly like he has for three years…..and still make $30 million dollars…..does he actually cash those paychecks? This is like giving bonuses to the Excutives who led AIG to a have to get a government bailout! Sickening!

I think Spagnuolo is doing very well with what he has (which isn’t much.)

Part of the reason he doesn’t have much, however, is that Devaney simply hasn’t done the job in his (admittedly short) tenure so far. As the VP of Pro Personnel i.e. influencer for the 2008 draft, he selected Chris Long, who has done next-to-nothing for the Rams. Then Donnie Avery?! Draft experts were shaking their heads, and it wasn’t an up-and-down shake. The best value pick in that draft was David Vobora, who is turning into a solid player, but of course he wouldn’t be starting on almost any other NFL team.

In 2009, Laurinatis seems like a very good pick. Other than that, though…

Keith Null is another wasted draft pick. They had no intention of playing him this year or next. Null is the equivalent of a Brock Berlin. A hopeless third string camp QB, four or five years removed from any NFL shot. Sans Warner & other QB’s placed behind Brett Favre.
Why do the Rams waste so many draft picks on reach players? They have needs and get everybody but, the players they need. Draft a second rd QB, a first rd TB, 3rd rd weak side linebacker, 4th rd mammoth NT, 5th rd G/T, 6th rd, a tall CB.

Put Null in for a couple of series in the 2nd quarter. He may ignite this offense if they let him throw. I know he’s not ready for a whole game yet at this level, but we fans need something to get excited about.
