Police and relatives said three women were fatally shot Saturday night in East St. Louis.
The shooting was reported about 9 p.m. at the Crown Food Mart at Martin Luther King Drive and Collinsville Avenue. Police said at least one woman died in the shooting and several relatives said two more women also were fatally shot. Police would not confirm whether the other two had died.
The three were in a silver Dodge Caliber near a gasoline pump when several shots were fired, police said. An 8-year old boy and a 1-year old child in the vehicle were not hurt.
At least five shots were fired, leaving shattered glass on the pavement near the driver side door. Blood was smeared across the passenger side of Dodge’s hood.
The women, all Illinois residents, and the children were taken to Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital in East St. Louis, police said.
Detective Kenneth Berry said investigators had one person in custody but did not believe that person was the shooter. The Illinois State Police had also joined the investigation.
“We are still sorting through everything,” Berry said.
A crowd of at least 75 people gathered Saturday night outside the hospital, where relatives and friends said the shooting stemmed from an argument between one of the victims and her ex-boyfriend.
