The Bureau of Labor Statistics, out with its monthly unemployment report, says the jobless rate in metropolitan St. Louis jumped from 8 percent in April to 9 percent in May.

The rate is not adjusted for seasonal employment, such as construction jobs.

In an accounting released Tuesday morning, the BLS said nearly 128,500 local residents were out of work in May. That figure does not take into account unemployed individuals who have abandoned their job search.

The BLS numbers lag behind, but mirror, statewide jobless figures released two weeks ago by the Missouri Department of Economic Development. Missouri’s unemployment rate for May, seasonally adjusted the DED, was 9 percent.

Nationally, the BLS saidĀ  joblessness increased inĀ  every 372 metropolitan areas measured in its monthly survey. Of those, 15 vicinities — most in California and Michigan — recorded unemployment rates in excess of 15 percent. Another 21 metropolitan regions had unemployment below five percent.

The national unemployment rate in May was 9.1 percent. The BLS will release the national June jobless figures on Thursday.

I’m confused. Two headings for the same text. One says unemployment is up and one says EMPLOYMENT is up.

I suggest we just ship more jobs to Canada, India, and the Phillipines and see if we can get that number to at least 10%. See Chrysler, Sara Lee and Wells Fargo for job shipment outside the borders.

Don’t forget, GM is going to make their new green car in Mexico. I wonder how many US dollars they gave to the GM bailout, oh wait, they didn’t… If only our President would realize what country he is president of, and stop apologizing for this country, and worrying about everyone but the citizens of this country, maybe we could get out of this mess. It would also help if the leaders of this country realized that the only thing that is going to save this country is getting the jobs back to it, the kind of jobs that drive the economy, instead of shipping everything out of this country. I don’t care how much you give the banks, or the car companies, if people don’t have jobs here, they aren’t going to get bank loans, buy cars, buy homes, or anything else for that matter.

I agree with saveamericannow,
Why is consumer confidence down, because we are all afraid the next pink slip will be handed us and told well they will work for a fraction of what you will in India. sorry, good luck and the employment office is down one block and over two.
I know they are an easy target but Wal Mart taught and ASSISTED most manufacturers in this country how to set up shop in China and and ship goods back. The Huffy bike factory in Farmington is a good example. Wal Mart basically told them if they wanted Wal Mart to keep buying their product they would have to make it in China. The funny thing is the price of the bike in the store did not come down, yep you guessed it Wal Mart pocketed the difference.
Just wait until cap and trade passes, you want to see a mass exudus into Mexico and Canada? All you will hear is a vacuum noise.

How can unemployment be down? Weren’t 600,000 jobs saved or created this year already? Boy, things sure are looking up aren’t they? I thought our debt load was supposed to save us?

600000 JOBS? Yeah at McKey D’s, Wendy’s and KFC. There are no real jobs for trades personnel and displaced industry employee’s sucking up Unemployment Insurance. Next year ought to be interesting. People will fall OFF the roles and NO longer be considered unemployed. Then things will get better? Ha Ha. Kind of like the 1st depression. Sham Wow Obama and his cronies will come to realize this next year.
