Job fair provides snapshot from the employment front…

From the print edition of STLJobWatch, published in Friday’s Post-Dispatch:

As these things go, the Putting America Back to Work” job fair Wednesday at the Heart of St. Charles Banquet Center was fairly low-key.
Unlike many fairs I’ve attended recently, this one didn’t have a long line of applicants winding around the building, anxiously waiting to get in the door. Perhaps it’s a sign that the economy is indeed inching its way back. More likely, it was the heat.
The scene inside was standard job fair layout: Approximately 40 businesses, governmental agencies, educational institutions and career consultants positioned behind a gantlet of tables circling the room.

Some vendors drew more interest than others.lace_ad_here(”inlineframe1″); var flashAd_config = {ad_config: {ad_type: ‘apt_ad’,target: ‘_blank’,div: “ad_38708551″,flashver: ‘8′,swf: ‘http://l.yieldmanager.net/apex/mediastore/6277374c-0834-4fd1-9890-8e23d5f6076c’,altURL: ‘http://us.ard.yahoo.com/SIG=161rcf2gl/M=600189723.600193494.403458001.403458001/D=ncbz/S=2022775705:LREC/Y=PARTNER_US/L=dadaa78a-6294-11de-b047-a7fe60f4acae/B=ivJlAmKIVMg-/J=1246050233420951/K=ffxgzEkJiHRBqa1Fiz2lLQ/EXP=1246057433/A=1732838920004701653/R=0/X=2/id=altimg/SIG=10ru7p8hd/*http://korteco.com/green/’,altimg: ‘http://l.yieldmanager.net/apex/mediastore/4d4ba20a-af10-4174-a08d-d7accbad3e33′,width: 300,height: 250,flash_vars: ['clickTAG', 'http://us.ard.yahoo.com/SIG=161rcf2gl/M=600189723.600193494.403458001.403458001/D=ncbz/S=2022775705:LREC/Y=PARTNER_US/L=dadaa78a-6294-11de-b047-a7fe60f4acae/B=ivJlAmKIVMg-/J=1246050233420951/K=ffxgzEkJiHRBqa1Fiz2lLQ/EXP=1246057433/A=1732838920004701653/R=1/X=2/id=flash/SIG=10ru7p8hd/*http://korteco.com/green/']}};

As the folks at the Internal Revenue Service table busied themselves with curious job-seekers, a representative of a school bus service seated nearby literally twiddled his thumbs.
Typical of these events, the would-be employees showed up in an array of clothing options that ranged from business suits to skimpy tank tops.
I’ll admit to knowing little about fashion, but I suspect a bare midriff may be considered poor form in an opportunity to make a positive first impression…
