Larry Smith’s legacy

St. Louis Post-Dispatch/STLtoday.com

For the second time in two weeks, the Show-Me State mourns a loss as former Mizzou football coach Larry Smith died at age 68 on Monday.

Arguments can be made that while the Tigers’ success under Gary Pinkel is his own, his predecessor put down the foundation for Mizzou’s turnaround. Smith’s 1997 and 1998 Bowl teams briefly elevated the dormant football program in Columbia before his eventual dismissal after the 2000 season.

Where Larry Smith coached, football teams excelled. Whether it was turnarounds (Tulane, Arizona and Mizzou) or inheriting top programs (USC), Smith brought success with him.

So hold a moment of silence for our honorary STL Sports Nation citizen. At the suggestion of online sports editor Mike Smith, we take a look at more coverage of Smith’s passing from his stops along the college football landscape.

TULANE (1976-79)

The Green Wave’s football site has a nice read on Smith (and a terrific archived photo of his days in New Orleans). Also check out the Tulane Beat posting on Smith from Nakia Hogan, of the (New Orleans) Times-Picayune on NOLA.com.

ARIZONA (1980-86)

The Arizona Daily Star, a Post-Dispatch sister paper, really gives the most comprehensive coverage of Smith’s days in the desert on azstarnet.com (registration required) with their obituary, rememberances and a column, written by Greg Hansen. Also check out their timeline and slideshow. Read also the release from the Wildcats site.

From the Tucson Citizen (registration required) on tucsoncitizen.com, we have a staff report and column by Anthony Gimino.

USC (1987-92)

The Los Angeles Times at latimes.com had just one story by Jerry Crowe and nothing else for the former Trojans head coach. The Los Angeles Daily News had a staff story from Scott Wolf while the Orange County Register ran the AP’s story. The Trojans site has a nice tribute to Smith.

MIZZOU (1994-2000)

In the home state, we have originating coverage from the Kansas City Star (kansascity.com), Columbia Daily Tribune (showmenews.com), Columbia Missourian (columbiamissourian.com), and wire stories from the (Cape Girardeau) Southeast Missourian (semissourian.com), Springfield News-Leader (news-leader.com) and (Jefferson City) News Tribune (newstribune.com). Also check the Tigers site for notable Tigers and their recollections of coach Smith.
