Legace gets Blues company in Atlanta
Today’s post is brought to you by NHL.com and its All-Star game coverage.
Last week, Blues netminder Manny Legace was named as a reserve to the NHL’s Western Conference All-Star team.
He was the only Blue selected for the showcase game in Atlanta, although for what it’s worth, Brad Boyes and Paul Kariya have All-Star numbers.
The game will be broadcast Sunday., Jan. 27 on Versus with the puck dropping at 5 p.m., St. Louis time.
On Tuesday, rookies David Perron and Erik Johnson, a pair of Blues’ first-round draft picks and cornerstones to the Note’s youth movement, were selected to the YoungStars All-Star challenge teams.
Given Legace’s play of late, I thought he had a chance to replace Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo as the starting goalie for the West. Luongo is passing on the game to spend time with his pregnant wife.
That is until I saw that former Blue Chris Osgood was also selected as a reserve for the West. Osgood, who was profiled last week by NHL.com staff writer Dan Rosen, has one aspect in his favor besides a solid season in goal: Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock, who is coaching the Western team. Babcock will probably spend more time selecting a suit for the game than he will mulling over who to start in goal.
Another NHL.com staff writer, Mike Morreale, also recently profiled the Blues’ lone star.
The careers of Osgood and Legace have overlapped in the Capital as well as the Motor City. Once again, Rosen captures that relationship (rivalry?) in his story when the reserves were announced.
There’s not much there now, but keep checking for more coverage from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution from the Thrashers page on ajc.com leading up to the game.
