Super Bowl reads lead to eventual Rusty Wallace update
Rolling through today’s sports wires, I saw that Arnold native and former NASCAR champion Rusty Wallace is getting re-assigned in his duties for auto racing coverage for ESPN.
But as happens oh so often, the online package from Bristol, Conn., distracted me.
I’m sure the faithful citizenry are nearly equally faithful readers (OK, probably more faithful readers) of the Worldwide Leader in Sports’ website. But just in case, I did want to pass along some of their feature coverage today on Super Bowl quarterbacks and their heroic — or forgettable — championship game performances.
Despite the depressing and reality-smacking centerpiece on former Dolphins Super Bowl QB David Woodley by ESPN.com senior writer Elizabeth Merrill, the ranking of the 82 quarterback performances was intriguing. Those shorts were compiled by Allison Wachs. Scouts Inc. and ESPN contributor Jeremy Green has a podcast on the list as well. We’ll get back to those in a second.
Accompanying the feature was some stories on QBs not named Montana, Bradshaw or Unitas. Compiled by Rudy Klancnik, some of the featured also have STL Sports Nation ties, including Vince Ferragamo of the L.A. Rams and Super Bowl XIV, former Illini and New England Patriots QB Tony Eason (a very good read) and former St.L. Rams QB Mark Rypien.
Back to the rankings, the pair of performances turned in by beloved Kurt Warner rank in the top 20. Warner’s winning game comes in at No. 8, while his sequel comes in at No. 18. Ironically, Tom Brady’s championship debut in winning Super Bowl XXXVI against Warner comes in at No. 26.
Further distraction ensued when I found a Len Pasquarelli update, who reports Cam Cameron is heading to Baltimore for the offensive coordinator position. The OC search in Capital City apparently continues.
By the way, here’s the ESPN.com News Services story on Wallace’s new studio gig.
