Quick Hits: Did you hear about Pujols? Maybe not

St. Louis Post-Dispatch/STLtoday.com

There may be some substance to this “East Coast” bias and ESPN, but how can their baseball staff flat-out ignore an injury to Albert Pujols on Tuesday night in Cincinnati? No matter, I guess, since they do have an Associated Press update on him and Adam Wainwright. Besides, Post-Dispatch Cards beat writer Joe Strauss addressed the St. Louis Cardinals MASH unit extensively in Wednesday’s Joe Strauss Live chat and a mid-afternoon update, with the slugger going to the DL and out at least three weeks.

Those NBA Finals must be big news or something.

Figured I try Cincinnati.com and their Reds coverage, but it was just game-related coverage with a sprinkling of Pujols medical reporting.

Ken Griffey Jr. hitting 600 career home runs must be big news or something.

I’ll give Cincy and the rest of the sporting nation some time to realize the game’s best hitter is physically incapacitated. But while clicking around the site for the Cincinnati Enquirer, I was reminded about their web-sidekick, NKY.com. Still no Pujols news, but found this Left Turns special on the Racing Wallaces, formerly of Fenton, Mo., by Joe Reedy of the Enquirer staff. This weekend’s Nationwide Series race at the Kentucky Speedway will feature three Wallaces, over two generations, on the track and one — top Wallace, Rusty — broadcasting for ESPN2, according to Reedy’s narrative. Here’s some other online copy for the citizenry:

“Izzy looks sharp in rehab start” by Joe Cress of the Springfield News-Leader on news-leader.com.

“6 with ASU ties drafted in 1st round” by Jeff Metcalfe, of the Arizona Republic on azcentral.com includes coverage on the Cards’ first-round pick Brett Wallace.

“Five more Ole Miss players taken in draft” by Chris Kieffer, Oxford Eagle on oxfordeagle.com that has coverage on Lance Lynn, the Rebels P the Cards selected with their post-first round comp pick in last week’s MLB Draft. Here’s the Daily Mississippian (the school’s newspaper on theDMonline.com) story by Jacob Threadgill.

Finally, here’s copy from the Edwardsville Intelligencer (goedwardsville.com), the Alton Telegraph (thetelegraph.com) and the Belleville News-Democrat (belleville.com) on SIUE’s move to Division I sports, courtesy of the Ohio Valley Conference.

The amazing thing was that last night when Soriano went down, it was repeated over and over. Yet, still no mention of AP. Oh well, let the opposing teams still think that #5 is lingering.

I’ve seen Albert’s injury discussed on ESPN several times, including BsseballTonight at 7E ST yesterday, and on PTI. Not as much as say, Manny’s high-fiving a fan got, but still a few of mentions. More than ESPN usually mentions the 2nd best-record team in the NL.

Pujols’ injury was the top story on SportsCenter the night it happened. It hasn’t gotten as much attention as, say, an injury to A-Rod (or the progress of Joba Chamberlain–seriously, ESPN, who outside of NY cares?) but it hasn’t gone unnoticed either. One rather unforgivable mistake, however: in one of their graphics before showing clips of Pujols’ injury, SC had his name over a PHILLIES logo. What, we’ve traded him already? He must be really badly hurt :O

I’ve long thought ESPN has a bias against the Cardinals. When you’re from a region of the country that doesn’t get much Redbird info (especially since I can’t get the Cards on KMOX any more)you notice when night after night it seems to take longer and longer for them to get to St. Louis highlights. They sometimes seem to cover Boston and New York at least 2 or 3 times before they get to the Cards once. Oh well, it good to see the Redbirds doing so much better than pre-season expectations! Go Cards! Get well Albert!

It’s not just an “east coast bias”– I live on the West Coast and our local fish wrap will have extensive coverage of the hapless Mariners– or the Giants– but very little about the resilent Cardinals (or other relevant baseball stories: Tampa Bay, for example).

Our paper includes all the box scores and usually a short recap. Our 10-0 game didn’t warrant a recap while the Cubs did. Go figure.

The comments are all true (I’ve been on both the East Coast and West Coast during the these past two weeks)- the TV and papers don’t acknowledge the Cards at all. HOWEVER, I stopped in at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown the other day, and dear Cardinals Friends, we OWN the place (there is more Cardinal RED than any other color by far!!). El Hombre already has his jersey there and they’re gonna have to build a new wing for TLR and AP.

I caught the ESPN report on AP, but I found myself thinking that, if it had been A-Rod, or Manny, or Jeter, et al, there would have been interviews with the team docs discussing prognoses. For many years, we Cards fans have had to wait throug excruciatingly over-long highlights of Red Sox, Yankees, and even Twins (Who knew?) games, in order to catch a glimpse of a Ludwick walk-off homer, or a Pujols tape measure blast, or, most recently, a Looper complete game! I promise one night I sat through multiple, separate highlights of the Red Sox game before finally being “treated” to a 20-second Cardinals “highlight” in the SECOND HOUR! To paraphrase the sorely missed Jack Buck: “That’s NOT a winner!”
