Potty parity is back again; does it…er, tick you off?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Without apology, I present to you (again) the topic of “potty parity.” I took plenty of heat the last time we presented this topic. But I offer it again with head held high.

Why? Well, apparently the state of Missouri’s esteemed legislators felt it was important enough to create legislation around the issue: Equal access to potties in public places.

And it seems that the sparkling new Chaifetz Arena on the SLU campus is in violation of the law — although it has complied with the city’s plumbing code.

The problem? Says our story: “For good measure, they threw in…

Are Lake Saint Louis officials doing right by changing memorial plaques?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

A new veterans’ memorial park in Lake Saint Louis is just opening — but opening to controversy. Apparently, part of the planning for Veterans’ Memorial Park included memorial plaques that summarize the wars that the United States has been part of.

Those plaques include sections for “mistakes” and “consequences.” Our story points out:

For example, the “mistakes” portion of the plaque entitled “Global War on Terror, 1997—Present” read, in part: “As of 2007, the Afghanistan and Iraq wars failed to enable viable governments leading to continued guerrilla fighting. The Iraqi Army was quickly crushed but the U.S. disbanded the Iraqi…

Should Obama have broken ties with Rev. Wright sooner?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright spoke out again this week, suggesting that the U.S. was an imperialist nation and that the government could have invented HIV as a means of genocide against minorities. He was the pastor at the church that Barack Obama belonged to, conducted Obama’s wedding ceremony and baptized his children.

“Based on this Tuskegee experiment and based on what has happened to Africans in this country, I believe our government is capable of doing anything,” Wright said.

According to the AP story about the comments — and Obama’s reaction:

Obama is trying to tamp down the uproar over the…

Could a plan to create a tuition-free college education program fly?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Democratic gubernatorial candidate (and attorney general) Jay Nixon announced a plan today that would allow thousands of community college students to move on to a four-year state university tuition free in Missouri. Yes, in Missouri, the state with the highest average college tuition in the Big 12.

“Middle-class families in Missouri are being squeezed,” said Nixon.

He said the program would help 26,000 students — and cost $61 million. He didn’t say, however, where that money would come from.

To be eligible, students would have to maintain a 3.0 grade point average while in community college, complete 50 hours of community…

Love the neighborhood but not the schools? What do you do?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Our story today addresses the dilemma some homeowners have about where to live vs. where to educate their children. Maybe you find a neighborhood you like, but the schools aren’t so good. Are you making a decision to send children to private school in that case?

Or maybe you find a neighborhood where you have to settle for less house, or more driving, in order to have access to schools that you like better?

What would you do? Did you make a decision like these? How about when you were younger? Did you attend private or public schools?
